I agree... values aren't created easily... It takes a lot of deep work, insight and awareness to create values that bring a stable foundation - one that can stabilise the core of energy on which you build everything else from, which can be limitless in the true potential of being human, which intentions is for everyone to thrive. To have a stable foundation of values where everyone in your nucleus can thrive - it helps to understand how energy at its core works. Everyone focus's on psyche only... but we are here with a body for a reason. Dismissing it has null, dismisses core intelligence... of a whole integration and the wisdom that brings.

Values are easily created. The question is are they also useful for society and humanity as a whole. Those who don't share values that are beneficial, we tend to lock away. Sheesh - Peterson is seriously not a great thinker.

I believe values are set subconsciously by the people who raised you, you were exposed to, and the environment you were raised as a child. The actions you observed had meaning, and the more you observed them or experienced them, they became your value. Most of us don't know our true values until some situation happens where you have to make a moral, ethical decision, then the turbine in your subconscious kicks in and your response/behavior will be the result of whatever value is part of your psyche.

Such an interesting topic. I often wonder myself, before language and culture, what bound us as humans? After listening to mr peterson and hearing jung and freuds works , you cant help but be drawn to the idea of the collective subconscious. Thank you wisemen.

What if those values he says we can create, is referring to our core values of existing; food, drink, shelter, reproduce, ect. and how we manifest that to represent it in ourselves, individually.

My bone to pick with this is that even as Dr. Peterson’s argument stands, you absolutely can jump to the conclusion that we *can* create values; we have people demonstrate this relatively often. Just because it’s our default mode to be led by our values doesn’t mean it’s our necessary mode. I think it certainly is harder to create values than to follow the ones we agree with, but Mitcham’s argument stands.

Gonna disagree on the creating your values, though would separate societies values vs individual values a society can glorify all sorts of ideas, However, the people within a society can choose whether or not to embrace them, example the Marxists may have created "value" system but the fact is it didn't work on a personal level for Russians so publically gave lip service to communism and in practice ran illegal private workshops out of their basements the same thing for north Korea today, creating a black market or shadow economy. Very similar to Jung's shadow except on a societal level driven by the need to survive and thrive. Similar to how in medieval times in spite of the church influencing the peasant's mind there were still prostitutes and scandals with a side of organized murder. Society is still made of individuals which have their own personal struggles. One of Nietzsche's points was you had to shrug off the value systems that others pushed on you. The reason for this is these value systems are designed by someone else for someone else with a different set of struggles and aren't really truly yours. When you've been broken down and life holds no meaning because you've been crushed under the weight of personal struggles, It is at that point you find you can truly build yourself because rock bottom is a firm place to build upon. From there the shadows of the mind are no longer behind you or passing thought, Rather they are in full view and you have to reckon with them and incorporate them into the foundational structure you will build for yourself. You'll make errors and then have to fix them but you will build yourself into a new person Jordan is correct, it is hard and requires discipline, but no one accomplishes anything worth doing without struggle. He just lets his dislike of value systems created by others color his views on creating value systems.

I don't know if it's a good idea to have beliefs about something, maybe it's better to not have beliefs at all, in order to not blind yourself with reality.
