➤➤Transcript (Partial):
Thoughts on the Eastern idea of moving away from excessive thinking into the awareness beyond thinking-removing it from the driver's seat to be used more as a tool? Yeah, well... I thought a lot about this in relationship to a couple of ancient ideas-the one Mesopotamian idea-characterization of Marduk who is the highest Mesopotamian deity. It was Marduk who carved up the Goddess of Chaos Tiamat into pieces and made the world out of her pieces. So Marduk is the force that confronts chaos and builds habitable order like the logos in Genesis. And one of Marduk's attributes was that he had eyes all the way around his head. Then there's Horus the Egyptian god who's the famous eye and Horus is really a deification of attention, I would say. And there's a difference between attention and thinking. Like, let me give you an example. So thinking seems to be instrumental, mostly. People also often say to me, “Well what's your-what's your strategy when you go into an interview?” And the answer is-well I don't have a strategy when I go into an interview because I'm there to have a conversation. And I'm not sure where the conversation will go and I'm willing to let it go wherever it goes. I'm not there to sell books although I'm perfectly happy if more books sell because obviously I wrote a book and I want people to read it and there's a whole enterprise behind it and so it's also my responsibility to do the marketing properly but I'm not going to do these interviews to sell books or to promote myself or-I don't have a strategic goal in mind except that I'm going to have a conversation and I'm going to say what I think and take the consequences because I assume that if I say something and I believe it's true then the consequences are as positive as they can be regardless of how they look at the time. And that's an issue of faith because I believe that the habitable order is generated by spoken truth. I believe that; I think that's the truest thing I know. And so I go into the interview-and I did this in my clinical practice and I try to do this when I'm talking to people too-is that, I'm not thinking about where the conversation is going or what point I want to make or what I want the outcome to be-any of that-I just let that go. You know, it's within this broader framework of assuming that the truth is the most effective means of progressing and then I pay attention. And what happens when you pay attention is that, well, you're watching a person. This is a great treatment for social anxiety, by the way, because if you're socially anxious you tend not to pay attention to the person. Pay attention to who you're talking to. Watch them like a hawk. Like, not paranoid or anything like that and not too intently because you make them uncomfortable but intently pay attention to what they're saying, to how they look, to their facial gestures-all of that. Look at their face and watch and listen and try to understand what they're saying...

@Psychonaut If the dangers of Benzos are so well known that you question the competency of the man who was prescribed them, why are you not questioning the competency of the doctors who prescribed them to him? And why is the drug not banned from use? Doctors in America and Canada, are right now as we speak prescribing this drug to people. Sounds like the doctors have some sever ethical or competency problems, but you want to blame the patients competency instead.

@Psychonaut And Jordan Peterson's message is - "Never do or say anything that makes you weak." How ever he went about it makes no difference, the fact is that he got the drug out of his system, and is no longer dependent on them. Sounds like a success story to me, but you want to see failure, so that is what you will see.

It suits me better, and clears my mind of debris, but what I meant is that Jordan presents in plain english a means of going out into the world in a meaningful productive way. Whether I impress others or not is no longer of importance to me and hasn't been for a long time. Aka thoughts become words become things. We've been led into a paradigm where magic only exists in books or movies, and that only children should use their imagination. But the fact is that a spell is just some words you say out loud, and active imagination is a muscle you can build to become better at creating - aka enacting your will into the world. Life is a lot more amazing than it's made out to be, and the capacity of human ability is virtually unknown.

Paying attention is allowing your thoughts to be naturally truthful. Thinking is strategically shaping your thoughts to produce a desired outcome. If you think about it, thinking of what you would like to say rather than saying exactly what you’re thinking is a form of lying

Vincent Moriarty yes, and we lie a lot of the time in order to not hurt people. I’m not saying lying in this way is bad, I’m just pointing out that the difference between paying attention and thinking, is that thinking requires a degree of lying. So, if you would like to truly listen to someone, get rid of all the “thinking” in your head that’s attempting to manipulate and shape a thought or set of words, and just pay attention! This is what makes Jordan brilliant, he’s able to articulate these kinds of concepts out of thin air. The only reason I’m able to even observe these concepts is because Jordan already laid them out for us to discuss

Reciprocation is a key component to healthy, most of the time, conversation and honest communication. Listening with the intention to have a reciprocated response, but not biased by one's own opinions, agendas, and experience. To speak the truth is to first know what the truth is. To know what the truth is is an incredibly intensive, introspective process filtering the various inputs from the world through our own, personal, neural structure, everyone's filter is different based on their experience. The truth is malleable, it can be filtered differently, it is not absolute. Our truth filter is made up of our values and our education. Therefore, to have a better truth to speak, we all owe it to ourselves and the world around us to to put work into developing a strong value system and to be as educated as possible in fundamental areas of human life. I've always loved Dr. Peterson's work because I feel that he has always built his arguments off of an incredibly strong base of values and fundamentals.

Dearest Jordan Peterson. I'm no young man, I'm a grandmother of one and mother of three. I love you with intense tenderness. And here, in this clip, you spell out the secret of your immense charm. You are authentic. And we all are , apparently, starved for that in public life.

Whenever I converse with people, I notice that the issue isn't so much people not paying attention per se, but that the noise inside their head is just so loud it drowns everything else out. It's almost impossible for them to pay attention because all they can see and hear is their voice and insecurities. It's only when we find that "inner peace" can we truly pay attention to people; to hear what they're actually saying and to see them for who they are.

Actually when has he ever done that? His debates with “leftists” haven’t cast him in a very adept light tbh it’s evident he gets out of his depth pretty quick.

@@seanywarsong Whatever bro. Shits gonna hit the fan soon. It's in the air & shits happening. Americans don't want totalitarianism. And we're gonna fight these Communist lowlifes to the death. It needs to happen. Responsible , good , law abiding ppl cannot co exist with this. If life was perfectly fair it'd be pretty boring. And it would only happen via force. And we'd be in breadlines if we're lucky & the same trillionaires funding this global far Left takeover will own the world forever.

All American Patriot case and point. Nothing you said coincides with reality. Trump embodies everything which you claim to despise and America is not left at all. Fighting you’re own countrymen to the death over a difference in perspective, you must not have a whole lot of faith in your point of view or there would be broad consensus, that’s how democracy works. Anyway you won’t have to worry about a war because dear leader is already wiping out a whole side of the isle...his own.

I think an important addenda needs to be the humility to also be wrong and the flexibility to change one's point of view. Honesty and intent listening are great, and fully endorse asking questions, but if thoughts emerge and they are wrong we need to be able to recognize that and internalize it. Godspeed Dr. Peterson!

I too have been trying this for years. Don't be discouraged or surprised when you catch yourself doing the opposite of " going with the flow" so to speak, one upping and self promoting inserted into a conversation, or even trying to take control. It takes practice!

I am experiencing exactly this. To say what I am thinking “from this abstracted and detached sense” I call speaking from the witness position. Coming from this place is more powerful than mere words. It is the Ground of my Being, or rather, my Becoming. If I bring this and my curiosity to the table and the other brings an agenda, it’s not going to turn out well. When I see that I am dealing with someone who hasn’t dealt with their own demons and has brought them to the table, I don’t feed them. I am 100% awake & present. When I witness my thoughts or feelings and share them like I am giving a weather report, it is a shock to the pattern. And if I am truly not focused on an outcome I see that disrupting the pattern is more than enough.
