Heres something interesting. Rudess joined in 1999 and Portnoy left in 2010 which means they played for 11 years. Mangini was in the band for 14 years. Which means Rudess has actually been playing with Mangini in Dream Theater even longer than Portnoy

...because Mangini was not only a more focused drummer, but unlike Portnoy, he didn't bring any dramatic baggage along with him. DT had some of their best albums during the Mangini era, while also winning a grammy. Portnoy on the other hand, had a tendency to control everything, including the songwriting, which led to subpar output such as Train of Thought and Six Degrees albums.

I absolutely agree that Mangini was better. His drumming was not only tight, but unlike Portnoy he didn't try to inject his emotional baggage into the songwriting. DT put out some of their best albums during the Mangini era. They also won a grammy during that time. IMO bringing back Portnoy seems like a move purely based on nostalgia-driven marketing. I'm not a fan of the new single either. It sounds like a mix of multiple songs from previous albums, so nothing really new.

I just don't understand how you all could throw a world-class musician to the curb so easily. Mangini took the band to new levels, Portnoy left and you should have made him live with his decision. Mangini was having the time of his life and you all jerked the rug right from under him. There's something to be said that you guys never won a Grammy until Mangini was in the band - not that that has any gravity in the grand scheme of the band but it is quite significant in DT history. Y'all should at least have him come back for some shows.

I'm so glad that I'm not the only one who thinks this way. They grew and expanded with Mangini. I'm going to miss the guy.

this is Portnoy's band, there would be no Dream Theater without him. I'm sure Mangini will survive.
@moveover76Ай бұрын
@@shaunsteele6926 it is 1/3 Portnoy's band, and he chose to leave. It was still Dream Theater with Mangini. Sure he'll survive, but that's totally not the point. No matter, they did him dirty.

@moveover76 Mangini is a grown man. He doesn't need random youtube commenters speaking for him. There is no tension between any of them so stop pretending that there is

Each album with Mangini got more and more stale, to the point that DT's last album had zero songs I liked. And even the one before that while it had a couple, I never really liked those couple enough to be excited to revisit again. It's not all due to Mangini, but even with Night Terror, which I mixed feelings about, I feel a different energy to the music
@onur_bastugАй бұрын
the question is, did you ever think why mike mangini is better portnoy? portnoy can't even play mangini's composed drum parts in the album. portnoy can not play alien for instance.

Portnoy's playing is better, he comes up with better drum parts. Whether he is able to play Mangini's parts is irrelevant.
