my 4th grade teacher read this to us years ago. i kept the book and always thought of it. I can’t find my collection of childhood books but all i’ve been thinking about is finding this book again. as a jewish person this book spoke volumes and as i grew older it meant more and more. thank u ❤️

I remember our teacher reading this to us as well. The part that always stuck with me was when she held the Star of David in her hand so tightly. I found that my children didn't even know this book existed and I was on a search to find it when I came across this.

I remember when my class read this book for one of our class read aloud & discussion assignments (the class would go around taking turns reading small sections of the book as a group and everyone would take personal notes then once we finished a book everyone would have a deadline for when we had to finish filling out a book summary sheet and then have a discussion about book) And while I don’t really remember more than one or two things about the book due to having trouble in school because of what I now know was untreated/ undiagnosed adhd I vividly remember loving the book and that it really spoke to me and stuck with me so a couple years later I’m here to revisit the book finally having medication for my adhd and now that I can actually comprehend stuff i have a chance to fully appreciate it

Same here. I had no idea who the Nazis were, what a concentration camp was or anything like. This was my introduction to the Holocaust. I remember that we had read this in class and the swastika was mentioned. Our teacher told us how it was horrible symbol that should never be drawn. In the after school program, I told another teacher that what I had learned that, but asked what the swastika looked like, since it was never shown to us. So she scribbled the symbol on a piece of paper for me. That was the first I saw the swastika. She explained to me that it used to be symbol of peace but the symbol was taken and bastardized. On the way to school (since my school did have buses) I had a talk with my mom about the Holocaust and she told me about the gas chambers. I remember asking her, “Why didn’t they fight back?” To which she replied that they didn’t know they were going to a gas chamber and even if they did, they were too weak to fight back. I still didn’t understand though
