I absolutely share your enthusiasm for phontonics+optoelectronics, given that it is multi-disciplinary, it truely keeps you on your toes learning as much as you can.

My prof. from solid state devices course made a heterostructure with AlGaAs and GaAs to make a infrared detector in 2005. He mentioned it in one of his lectures. Thank you for sharing these videos. It helps a lot to learn a subject from different perspective.

Seeing as how this field is so niche and many institutions don’t even offer classes on the subject matter, how are people supposed to break into the industry? Just genuinely curious. You have an amazing library of content and are a great teacher!!! Thanks for all you do.

I was expecting your comment to be from awhile ago because presently at my university (top 10 in Canada) I am doing research in this field. I am a physics major and I have had access to classes that give you the physical foundations for photonics and I feel prepared enough on that front. I agree though there aren't any classes specifically rated to photonics (as far as I know, the engineering department may have more options). I would say don't worry about it too much as long as you take the hard fundamental physics courses. (Electrodynamics, Quantum Mechanics, Complex Analysis). Also at least for my research, try to do as many optics experiements as you can. At my university we had 30 experiments to choose from and I chose all the optics ones. To answer how are people supposed to break into the industry, even in my undergraduate research I have had the opportunity to work with industry leaders. Private companies pay the universities to get projects off the ground and then the company will take over with more people and more MONEY when they think the time is right. Just doing my undergraduate research has allowed me to present at photonics conferences and meet with other industry proffesionals. I am looking at applying to masters and this will increase my networking opportunities in the field as many professors and graduate students have start-up companies and you will often continue to work along side industry. In addition, undergraduate co-op and masters co-op/internships will help you gain work experience and it helps getting into a company when you have already done research for and worked with the engineers at the company. I haven't figured everything out, but I'm putting the work in and I'm meeting a lot of very skilled and intelligent people and hoping the pieces will fall together. Hope this helps.

As an ECE student , this videos are awesome! Thanks! [ By the way, I like the balance of explanations to equations but, it might be nice if you could make extra videos where you go more deeply to some of the math.] Thanks again :)

@@JordanEdmundsEECSthanks for not overwhelming with equations! I’m a keen student and enthusiast of Electrical engineering but the intense amount of math and equations scares me off. I would love to get the big ideas and concepts right first before diving into the math. Would love your advice on that on how to navigate around that since I have genuine interest in the field.

Jordan, thanks for your videos! Just to clarify - in the case of InGaAs/GaAs quantum well the energy gap of GaAs should be larger than that of InGaAs.

Thanks for this amazing playlist!! Could you please recommend a beginner-level/basic book on optoelectronics and photonics?
@JordanEdmundsEECS3 жыл бұрын
Hmmm, I don’t know that there are any good “beginner” books, the simplest one is probably the one by S.O. Kasap, it’s pretty decent.

I am a non-electronics (mechanical) student. What are the pre-requisite subjects to be covered to understand this course?
@JordanEdmundsEECS5 жыл бұрын
1. A course in introductory semiconductor physics (I have a whole playlist for that) and 2. A basic circuits class (so you understand things like RC circuits and frequency response) and 3. An understanding of plane waves / basic electromagnetism and 4. A basic grasp of quantum mechanics and understanding the wavefunction (this is usually bundled into a semiconductor physics course or a course on modern physics)

Jordan have you heard of the company POET Technologies? They've apparently created a revolutionary Optical Interposer and Optical Engine. All their testing is complete and they are working with customers to integrate into products. I'd be interested in your opinion on the technicals they've released.
@JordanEdmundsEECS4 жыл бұрын
No I have not, it sounds cool but since it's wafer-level that's going to be very annoying for all the poor folks that don't buy whole wafers and rely on other fabs to send them chips. A whole wafer can easily run in the multiple millions of dollars, so it's not cheap.

Can any confirm this comment is posting, by replying to it? Did a search for photonics to find a video with few comments, so this comment would be easy to notice. Sadly have to use a vpn to get on youtube and wondering if the vpn server's IP address was blocked from commenting on yt.
