Agree with all you said. Been shooting for 55 years, so I've seen it all. Took the HX80 to Iceland, Norway and Sweden and it performed like a champ. Definitely hits above its weight.

I bought the hx80 after you’re first video about it, it helped me make my choice, thanks btw lol. I love it and I use it the most out of all my cameras. The low light problem really kills me when I need the camera most for night shots and shots indoors unfortunately, but for the most part, I love that camera.

the Sony rx100 v has a variable aperture from 1.8-2.8 which isn't bad at all! The g7x mark ii is the same. Not sure if that's what you meant by "affordable". I'm not really sure you'll get great low-light capabilities with a camera in the same range as the hx80... the sensors are just too small :(

Thanks for sharing! My daughter received this for her birthday and she's loving it! She uses a small tripod because she was constantly muffling sound the way she'd hold it. Will have to look into wifi features-didn't know it did that!

I am so happy I found this video, I was just about to purchase a Sony A5000 but I want something that won't overheat every 10 minutes and I think this camera (Sony HX80) will be perfect!! +Ben Crosbie the zoom is insane! But when you’re zoomed in really far, I’d suggest using a tripod to eliminate camera shake. The mic does a pretty good job, you might want to check out my video about how to make a mic muff for this camera so that it sounds even better! Thanks for checking it out!

Thanks for an honest review/insight! I've been realizing lately how ancient my Sony is (DSC-W290) and am looking to get a newer model. Mine still works well, but I'd love to utilize the new wireless capabilities and the flip screen. I post a lot to Instagram and it's a hassle to have to get out the cord to transfer the pictures to my computer and then upload it to a cloud space to get to my phone, etc. Glad to see this continues to be a good easy-to-use camera line although I'm sorry to hear it doesn't perform well in low light. I'll have to look at the specs of my model and see if it's at least better than that one.

Excellent review. I have only one caveat, this camera most definitely does NOT have a micro four thirds sensor. An m43 sensor is much larger than the sensor in this Sony and that's both good and bad. Optical physics would not allow a 30x optical zoom on such a large sensor (m43 sensors are approx half the size of a full frame DSLR sensor, and more than twice as large as the Sony sensor).

Been using this one for a few years for kids school events, trips/vacation, etc. and to me the pros are as simple as pocketable megazoom (about a 600mm equivalent (in yer freakin pocket!)). While I haven't used a lot of different makes or models, another pro is unlike a similar Canon the video bitrate on the Sony isn't going to break the storage bank. I'll never be a pro and haven't even been a hobbyist in decades, but I would like a better mic and a strobe. Yet every time I start to get close to upgrading I think back to the days of lugging a bag o' lenses around and it's hard to want to go back to that. If quality and convenience are important to you the ratio in this camera is truly hard to beat.

I think you need more light AND I think you need to soften it with a diffuser of some sort... like a 50% transparent shower curtain or a piece of parchment paper. You should start that the best thing in this camera is the super zoom not the display not the prize now and so on... you will go for the Rx100 cameras with a larger sensor. The HX most important and main thing is the zoom.

Could I ask you a question please? I have the Sony WX350 and I'm seriously looking at the HX80 as it's newer than the HX90 (not sure why the part number goes backwards!). Anyway, I'm wondering if this camera (as per ALL my Sony camera's I've owned) can be powered via the USB port whilst the camera is in use? (I'm not too concerned if it doesn't charge, or charges more slowly). I went to Chernobyl last year - I had a power bank permanently connected to my action camera and my Sony WX350 - Used it all day! My guess is YES, but thought I'd ask?

This appears to be quite unique. I went to John Lewis, not sure where you are in the world, but John Lewis is quite a respectable store in the UK with a wide selection of electronics, cameras and sometimes the representatives from the manufacturers in store. We tested Panasonic, Nikon and (damn can't remember) ANYWAY... Only the Sony would operate normally whilst USB charging was present. To me, keeping my camera running indefinitely from a power bank is quite important!

I tested it yesterday after I read your question and was shocked that it would actually work! The only other consumer camera that I’m aware of that can do this is a GoPro which I’ve hooked up in similar fashion to film an 8 hour time lapse. So cool!!

+Backpack Comics to be completely honest the audio isn’t that great. But, don’t let that stop you! It seems to be missing a lot of low-end, so you could add some in post to improve it OR record your audio to a phone or recorder and sync in post. It’s a great option for a beginner camera!

+Srijayanth FCB it takes fantastic photos, especially for just outdoorsy travel pics. As long as the camera has a good bit of light, you’ll be good! It doesn’t perform super well in low light situations.

How would you rate the 3 formats for pics and vids?

Hey there, thanks for your question! So those 3 formats (XAVC S HD, AVCHD, & MP4) are video formats. I rank them quality-wise in the order I wrote them, XAVC S HD being the best... BUT, if you're editing on an ipad or phone, mp4 is the only format that you can use. If you have professional editing software then I'd go with the other formats. For photos, I would use the highest quality setting (L:13m). Also, don't count out the scene selections menu... they actually do really well. For instance, if you're in a dark environment, use the "night shot" or "High sensitivity" settings. They help to brighten the shot and try to help reduce camera shake.

I was completely fine and happy with the camera and how it worked until my little brother got to it and ruined it somehow. I tried getting the guarantee but we couldn’t find it even with the receipts so I just left it alone. I found it yesterday and connected it to a cable to see if I could fix it and it turned on. Then an image on the screen shows up saying “turn the camera off then on” and every time I do it the camera doesn’t turn on so I have to take out the battery and disconnect and connect it again and the same image keeps appearing. Do you have any idea of what could be happening?

Thx a ton! Honestly, you really just have to learn the settings and practice. I just wrote a new eBook about mastering the settings of the hx80 and any other camera that shoots in manual mode... I plan to release it very soon with a new video! Once you have complete control over the camera, it's life changing! I actually haven't had a chance to test one out, unfortunately! But I've heard great things about it!

Unfortunately, most cameras have a 30 minute limit :( Until you get into the higher-end sony models or an actual camcorder.

+Formay Youtuv there is no hot/cold shoe mount on the camera.. but you can always add off camera lighting for sure!

I guess I didn't come right out and say it... but it's not great in low light. but I did say that if you give it the light that it needs, it will perform great. I also said that it excels outdoors. So,as long as the sensor has an abundance of light to use, it's a pretty nice little camera!

Atef Gilly go for this camera, the sx730 is even worse in low light, at least with this camera there are settings to make low light pictures better and they actually work. It’s not perfect but it’s not bad either. I just exchanged the sx740 for the hx80 today and I don’t regret it at all: this camera will be just fine untill I upgrade to the rx mark 4 😬
