In this lecture, I discuss the creation stories in Genesis, the first book of the Bible, and describe the parallels with the stories of the development of the Buddha from childhood to early adulthood, using the archetypal schema developed previous in the course.

@@gerardjones7881 Pretty sure human evolution would be frowned upon in a church. Anything, including human delusion, is a natural phenomenon and therefore science is applicable to explain it. If Jordan wishes to study the evolution of culture as a facet of human psychology then I, as an athiest, am very interested in what he has to say. If you want to call his teachings superstition and that historical texts are not relevant to what we are, so be it, but you will also have to apply that same reasoning to any scientific endeavor including math, physics, and chemistry, because just like the Bible, these things are tools used to produce a consistant end product. The fact they do produce something begs the question of how and why, and Jordan hits on these superstitious ideas and attempts to bring them to a realm of functional utility from an evolutionary pyschological perspective that I, again an athiest, can understand. Jordan Peterson doesn't peddle religion and as far as I can tell Jordan is the only person I know of that has bridged religion and science in such a way that is not dogmatic nor nihilistic and he has brought religious creationists from their radical denial of evolution and militant athiests from their radical insistance that all morality is subjective, to create a new unified body of people that reject ideology in favor of individual sovereignty and self control, which is functional and beneficial for everyone since a tyrannical state does not need to be developed to retain order. May he continue to fight till his dying breath in the Universities, in congressional hearings, and in the general public. #freespeech

The first thing I think when I see this is like, geez, thank God you didn't see this last night, eh? You might think you can just see this video online and not watch it immediately, and it's like, okay, first of all, WRONG, you CAN'T, and not because the video has some magic power--it's because your impulse control is Not That Good. Right. And so maybe you're a little weak willed, maybe your room is a bloody mess while you're listening to the lecture, and it's 1am and you have work in the morning, and you're snacking--right--so, that's not to say you're a bad person, it's just that you have Things To Sort Oat in your immediate vicinity, and man, lemme tell ya, if you start sorting those things out, you have NO IDEA what can come of it. You could eventually, down the line--and this is LONG TERM, man, it takes patience--you could resist that temptation to watch the new Jordan B Peterson video, and maybe you wouldn't feel so terrible quite so much of the time, and maybe you'd quit staying up late and snacking--who knows? Only you can find oat. But you'll definitely see results, that's a FACT. And I'd wager you'll find them quite positive.

He analyzes a lot, but there is a lot more. For example, there is a coherent and detailed explanation of how Marduk vs. Tiamat is an accurate description of the formation of our solar system - just like in Greece, every god in the story is also a planet. Tiamat was the planet between Mars and Jupiter, which was destroyed, and some of the pieces are now the Earth and the Moon. So if these stories are not only explanations of our inherent human existence, but also factual history - and history of things that happened before humans existed - then we're back to the mystical unknown. As for Adam and Eve, there's plenty more to that as well. He glosses over the 2 different stories of the creation of humans, but there are 2. First it says God created humans, male and female at the same time. Later there is a story about the Garden of Eden, and 2 particular humans who were created specially. Most people interpret the second story as a more detailed explanation of the first story, but that's not the only way to interpret it. One of my favorite examples of layers of Biblical interpretation is when Nathanael is introduced to Jesus. Philip tells Nathanael to come meet Jesus of Nazareth. Nathanael says, "Can anything good come from Nazareth?" But they go anyway. When Jesus sees Nathanael, he calls him an Israelite in whom there is no guile (or deceit, or trickery, or subtlety). This single comment shocks Nathanael, and he asks "How do you know me?" When Jesus answers that he saw him under the fig tree, that is enough proof for Nathanael to declare him the Son of God. But how did Jesus change Nathanael's mind so fast just by saying "Here is an Israelite in whom there is no deceit"? On the surface it's a compliment, calling him honest. It also somehow communicated to Nathanael that Jesus knew all about him - perhaps by referencing a scripture Nathanael may have just read from Psalms: "Blessed is the man whose sin the Lord does not hold against him, in whose spirit there is no guile." But maybe it is also a rebuke for Nathanael's earlier trash-talking, giving 1 short sentence 4 separate purposes: a greeting of approval and acceptance, a quotation and reference to holy scripture, a revelation of hidden knowledge as a demonstration, and a reproach or insult from a teacher to instruct a student. But how is it negative to say that an Israelite doesn't have any trickery in him? What is an Israelite? A descendant of Israel. Who was Israel? A man whose name was also Jacob, which means trickster. He was born holding his twin brother's heel, destined to trip people up. He tricked his brother out of his birthright, he used guile to deceive his father into giving him the blessing meant for his brother, and he tricked his father-in-law who had tricked him before. He ultimately used his guile in a wrestling match against an angelic being, earning his new name "Israel", which means "Wrestles with God". So by using the same root word for "guile" as in Jacob's name, Jesus was possibly saying that Nathanael was an Israelite in whom there was nothing of Israel. But that's only one interpretation of one sentence from the Bible, and you could spend hours studying any given sentence.

there is a certain resonance that rings in my mind as I listen to these lectures. I have actually cleared my desk of all distractions, bought a very expensive fountain book and notepad, and all I do after work is sit by my desk and write notes as I listen to Jordan Peterson. and what particularly drives me crazy is the fact that these vids were posted 2 years ago. I have wasted my time listening to the likes of Alex jones , the whole MSN and all these alternative media pundits who parrot each other and poison the well. I am in a transitional period of my life, and it is hell. A hell I could have managed if I had come across this material earlier. The ironic thing is that I would not have come across this material, if the MSN had nit tried to take hits at Jordan Peterson. I have studied psychology, sociology, Ai and arts and media at Uni level, but the stuff they taught never sank in. If only Jordan Peterson had been my lecturer. But as long as they do not do an Alex jones on Jordan? he will always be here, and I will always have my time spare to learn. It is not everyday that a person teaches you about morality with such clarity and such truthfulness. I am really enjoying these lectures, and as long as this channel is open? I feel like I am getting an education fro free. Absolutely loving this :)

@@spurkay2 Pretty sure human evolution would be frowned upon in a church. EVERYTHING is patterns of behaviour, probability waves, frequencies, wavelengths of energy, phenomena emerging from an ineffable flux, etc. Even the most solid, hardest material objects are a creation of your mind encountering a background resistance. The question is not true/not-true but good/bad and strong/weak and sustainable/ephemeral, encouraging/discouraging, inspiring/uninspiring, beautiful/ugly, life-enriching/life-cheapening, mind-expanding/mind-narrowing, soul-brightening/soul-darkening, joy-love-peace enhancing/joy-love-peace snuffing, etc. The biblical stories are as "true" as any scientific model or even direct perception. The lecture is titled “Genesis and the Buddha”, but there is very little consequential substance in the legend of Prince Siddhartha that parallels the genesis story. Possibly the only plausible parallel is their comparable mythological origins that are meant to establish an archetypal narrative. The scholarly references to the historical figure of Gautama “the Awakened One” have raised significant questions on the genesis of his provenance and whether they align at all with the references the Buddha himself gives to his family origins in the Suttas. More importantly, Buddha’s main contribution to the world of philosophy is less concerned with his legendary origins, which would fall into the timeline preceding the moment of complete awakening, but the significance of his teaching is revealed to him from the moment of realization and insight into the nature of reality. This moment of enlightenment is then followed by a lifetime of conscious existence that contributes the practical backbone to the philosophy of gradual awakening, that can be traced across multiple rebirths and the karmic forces that define them. According to the Buddhist psychology, we cannot define a single birth as determinant of the point of origination, even in the case of Gautama, who is considered one of several awakened masters in a lineage of samsaric disruption (paralleling the legend of the Buddha’s contemporary Mahavira of the Jains). The birth stories (Jataka tales) are further proof that Buddhist philosophy is far more invested in reincarnation as a ceaseless process of cause-effect formations, rather than a story of beginnings. The very notion of dependent origination points to no particular point as an origins, but lays out a series of co-arising factors that act upon each other in a co-dependent fashion to fuel the process of continuous rebirth. The “fuel” becomes of central value to the Buddhist doctrine, for this practical philosophy recognizes that for any mechanism to function it must be fueled, in this case by the volitional acts that constitute the karmic blueprint for the subsequent rebirth. Exhaust the “fuel” and the fire extinguishes itself. The genesis of Buddhist philosophy must be sought out not in the archetypal preludes to a single lifetime, but in the karmic factors influencing the continuous thread of cause-effect mechanics of rebirth. It is a rather futile exercise to speak of genesis within the Buddhist philosophy, or to equate it with other archetypal narratives.

The first two and a half minutes was like wrestling a bear. With profound levels of density, Dr. Peterson introduces the topic of this lecture so concisely that I immediately knew I didn't want to miss a single point. After what seemed to be the 30 minute mark, I was settled nicely into the lecture. I contentedly drew in my journal while my mind filled with the images, concepts, and subsequent understanding that Dr Peterson laid out.
