When I was a child I asked my father what we should do in preparation for the recent forecast of gloom and doom. His response was that the disaster never comes true and there is always a new threat imagined every 10 or 12 years because the old threat never happens. My children can’t believe that politicians would be so corrupt and use fear to distract and to control people. In my 76 years I have observed the failure of every prediction of gloom and doom so proving my father’s observations to be correct. One day, my children will no doubt reach the same conclusion and warn their children to fear only the politicians wanting to create nuclear war.

Strangely ok with this one. it actually seems like someone took the time to bake in decent ideas... idk though. still something off about it. To me it paints clear the automatic trust kids pick up from lackadaisical parents or other trusted adult models. Don't teach automatic trust. not even to yourself. you offer what trust can earn. and then you earn it. and then you actually give it. if they don't learn to trust you, how you gonna teach them to trust anyone else?

Excellent example of the value of the learned knowledge through living life. It's impossible to teach youth about the vast knowledge gained over the years. They will only realize the enormity of it, as you say, when they get there. I'm 79 and know so much more than what l learned in Academia. And the knowledge is far more useful than any academic education. The fears of today are greatly exaggerated bcuz of social networking. Another thing I've learned only recently. I fear for the youth having to live with too much technology.

But i then realised that every topic I teach is really a good news story it just needs to be presented as such. Poverty worldwide is reducing so why only focus on the remaining global inequality when the story is that we are moving towards a better future. Our students need to see a future that is positive as well as challenging. Thanks for this discussion its bang on.

I really appreciate this dialog. MY first reaction to this conversation was to think again about nature. I was born in northeastern New Mexico. In those days we didn't have cellphones, 4-wheelers, nor email. Everyone on farms and ranches everyone started working as soon as they could walk. You grew into harder and more complicated work. Most of these tasks were performed outside. As a consequence, I literally spent hundreds of hours outside. Many of those tasks were performed horseback. My father gave me my first horse when I was 7 years old. In the following years I worked 4 different ranches, two of them exceeded 100000 acres. I have seen places back in the mountains that only a few people have seen even to this day. The point is that I lived out in nature most of my waking hours. Even to this day I can sit on the porch to relax and observe nature. One of the things I have learned that there are certain actions that are dangerous because there are rules that make things work in nature. Be mean with a horse and the horse will eventually buck and otherwise rebel. Be patient and kind to a horse, the horse will like you. Another rule is that if you go out at night in the winter, you need more clothing than you do in the summer. Ignore this rule and you might end up dead. Obey the rules, nature is more kind to you. Another rule is that plants breathe out oxygen. We breathe out carbon. Get rid of carbon, the plants will die. Then people will die because the plants are giving us oxygen. And so on, so obey the rules and you will probably live a long productive life.

As an environmentalist who has presents to schools and business organizations on related subjects, i teach facts and reality over the religion of environmentalism. I tell young people that in order to fix a problem Bjorn was spot on about the economic balance in conservation. I take this discussion as an effort to create a culture of hope and innovation based on data and balance. One of my challenges is to refute the claims of the self proclaimed "Experts" on the internet and media who have no real experience in the field.

A small technical comment, if I may, because I, and I'm sure others, never want to miss a word. Dr. Peterson sometimes leans forward, (for example at 50:11) at which point the sound changes. I've observed this on some of his other podcasts as well. That presumably means the microphone is above his head and ends up behind it when he leans forward. Would a second overhead (forward) microphone or a lavalier clip be useful here?

Since I started following The Father he’s showed me how beautiful and optimistic my future is. I got married, had a baby and another due in April, changed careers and found something I’m really good at that pays me more than I’ve made in 10 years, discovered Bitcoin and cardano (which are going to change the world together and nobody realizes it yet)overall the whole world gets better everyday but so few of us have the ability to appreciate it, or capitalize on it. The real problem with doom and gloom environmental alarmism is that it RUINS the necessity of getting away from truly terrible practices such as how we now practice agriculture. Moving to regenerative agriculture needs to happen at some point soon. Anyone who knows anything about soil biology and plant health knows this is the case. Yet “the world is burning” takes up all the space in the headlines.

32:30 I think the reason it's easy for young people to get behind this is because it is made to shine as a simple path to being "virtuous". They are given an extremely simple and shallow understanding of the climate change issue, pointed only in one direction, given an enemy (anyone who doesn't agree that we need to reduce all Co2 right this instance), and then they are a morally good person. If they were given the full picture right from the start without the hypocricies (china overpoluting everyone by a large margin), that nuclear is an important thing to develop to manage this, and that humans are better at adapating to change rather than forcing everyone into lower living standards, then I don't think nearly as many would become esnared by the nihilistic environmental religion. Ah, Peterson added a decent bit to round out this point asvwell at 36:55

I work with ages 0 to 25 as a psychotherapist. More and more the adolescents and young adults come in with a total lack of meaning, a pessimistic even anti natalist philosophy, a view that everything they do is meaningless in the face of our supposed impending doom. At 14 they are making decisions to never have kids, to never marry or have a long term relationship. I assess for negative emotions of course but I also assess for positive. Even after we reduce some of the negative they must learn or relearn to expericne positive...to seek them. They often can't remember the last time they felt awe, inspiration, gratitude, intimacy even just feeling interested in something. there are times on my drive home where I can not hold back a few tears for them. More and more I believe this youth mental health crisis we keep hearing about is being taught to them. Haidt and his Co author in coddling of the American mind made a wonderful point how much of what is taught to youth about how to think is the exact opposite of what cognitive behavioral therapy does to reduce mental suffering. What's worse is I must be very very careful what I say or ask a client to reflect upon lest I get tattled on and draw the ire of our professional organizations which are now totalitarian institutions promoting a single narrative.

I love the optimistic perspective, but with all due respect, the reason why Northern European countries can afford to reforest is because they now exploit cheap wood from my country (Romania) and other similarly corrupt and poorer countries. In most statistics Romania and Eastern European countries in general aren't usually included, because we don't gather data the same way (as efficiently , detailed etc) as the West. So I am always skeptical of both sides of the argument when it comes to ecology, and would really like to see the data these statements are based on. I have to admit that I am not familiar with this guest's work and it is something I still need to look into.

Europe has been importing wood from all over the world for centuries. It started with having to build navies and merchant fleets, and moved onto houses, tools, furniture (teak, mahogany, pine etc.). Romania is not the only example. But, after benefitting from deforesting other countries for centuries, European activists are now lecturing those same countries about reforestation or (an idiotic term) “rewilding.” Apparently, any copse of trees (no matter how small) is recreating the forests that once covered Europe. The little furry critters so beloved of urban folks will somehow repopulate those new “forests” and life will be a Disney movie. Not very realistic.

So, I listened to this podcast a few days ago and there were a few things I took away from it. First of all, admittedly, without a face to the name, I could not help picturing Dr. Bjorn Lombord as Dr. Okun from Independence Day and I'm glad I didn't see the video first because picturing Okun made it a lot more entertaining because the enthusiasm was a complete match. On a serious note, having listened to a lot of JP's podcasts, I thought that Lomborg did a very good job at bringing levity to the conversation, correcting the odd fact without it looking disagreeable or argumentative and avoiding getting interrupted in a way that did not make Peterson come off as impolite either. A lot of guests seem to get off topic or allow themselves to get interrupted and then the conversation isn't as balanced. I enjoy the interviews where the host and the guest have equal amounts of airtime, not the ones where the host has fill in so much that it's more of a lecture. I don't agree with everything JP says (mostly regarding religion) but I agree with quite a bit of it and it's refreshing to listen to an interview where two people can find their points on which they agree and have a logical conversation without fixating on each detail and turning it into a pissing contest.

I'm a big fan of both Jordan Peterson and Bjorn Lomberg so please read my comments in context. The statistic that we doubled our live expectancy in the past 100 years is at best very misleading. Yes, it's technically accurate but the vast majority of that increase is due to a dramatic decrease in childhood mortality. The increase from age five on is a more modest 10%, not an overwhelmingly impressive statistic. We'll see what the numbers show in a few years but I'm convinced that the life expectancy is actually decreasing right now. Putting Covid aside, we know that obesity is rampant and that it has increased rapidly in all age groups. We also know there is a strong correlation between obesity and mortality. Thank you both for the podcast!

Gov and corporations suppress tech advancements today. They dont want the competition, or they want to own the competition. Google, amazon, and entertainingly enough harley davidson are all great examples of corps 'buying and burying' new and or competing startups. Its difficult enough to start and grow a company without the existing titans of industry trying to ruin you. Its almost completely disincentivized the efforts and interest needed to pursue an idea.

There are some beautiful moments and scenes, but there is also a tremendous amount of horrible brutality, predation, suffering, disease, pain, death, cannibalism, infanticide, starvation, competition, and uncaring fatal environments and conditions. One from the 80s talked about mass starvation bc of acid rain killing crops. 90's was hole in the ozone. Then I was told out of control el nino/la Nina cycles... global warming... now climate change. Did any of those things happen? No but we did get new taxes, regulations, and our politicians knew exactly where to put their money before we could even guess what scam was coming next. This starts in our universities. Government funding belongs nowhere academia. Its a huge conflict of interest. Our government and education system is running a cult and robbing us blind.
