In the next series of stories, the Biblical patriarch Abram (later: Abraham) enters into a covenant with God. The history of Israel proper begins with these stories. Abram heeds the call to adventure, journeys courageously away from his country and family into the foreign and unknown, encounters the disasters of nature and the tyranny of mankind and maintains his relationship with the God who has sent him forth. He becomes in this manner a light in the world, and a father of nations.
How is this all to be understood? I am attempting in this lecture to determine precisely that. How are we, as modern people, to make sense of the idea of the God who reveals himself to a personality? How can we relate the details of the Abramic stories to our own lives, in the current world? In what frame of reference can these stories be seen to make sense, and to reveal their meaning?

Most of his overarching themes about chaos and order come from Maps of Meaning, but I think having a specific example like the bible having it's own book as well would be noteworthy considering how you practically have to be an apologist on a University campus (and a very good one) for anyone to take you seriously if you see merit in it.

Agree. The cool thing is he doesn´t even have a choice to be on any side.. I really love that he noticed that. I mean that he approaches truth partially phenomenologically, i.e. he feels for what resonates with him and takes this as a clue as to its truth value. And this again is nothing more than brute honesty, because everybody does that. It´s only unfortunately so, that many soft scientists think that the formal scientistic aesthetics of a paper (sounding scientific, getting quotes right, sentence structure, and so on) could substitute for testing your theory for consistency in a (or the) larger framework (which is given in so far as it constitutes your world and thinking in the first place)

Dr. Peterson, Thank you for sharing your work. Almost a decade ago, I was struggling to get clean. I came across your work while trying to work through a personal definition of “a power greater than myself”. This is the “Higher Power” component of 12 step programs which I know you are familiar with. Your work has been a foundation of my recovery. Through your biblical lectures and your books, and in conjunction with a 12 step program, I’ve been able to put my life in order like never before. I was a multiple felon, an addict, a college dropout, and an awful excuse for a man. I blamed my addicted and abusive family that I was removed from by the courts at a young age. I blamed the ineffective government and I even blamed the God I claimed wasn’t real. (Funny how a man looking for excuses can place blame on an entity he holds as fictional.) Today, I have primary custody of my son. Today, I am clean. Today, I have a great job and beautiful home. Inside that home, I have a loving wife… a wife that constantly challenges me to be a better man and helps me raise my son to be a good man. I have gotten to the point in my recovery where my past is so distant that I was able to get cleared to coach my kid’s basketball team this year. Every day that goes by, I push to help other addicts find recovery and to continue my journey “pushing the largest burden I can manage uphill, gratefully.” I’ve wanted to thank you for a long time. I’ve modeled my aim upwards through the 12 step process bolstered with the 12 rules for life. I found peace with these cryptic, archaic stories through this lecture series. That allowed just enough separation in the armor that I built to shield me from the judgement of God to open me up to a prayer life that has yielded a rich spiritual connection with that God. I don’t know if my intellectual vanity would have allowed it without this lecture series. I thank you from the bottom of my heart. PS: I send links to this series and tell young men that I sponsor and support all about your work. You have helped me help many others and I imagine that pattern will continue to compound through the years. You are the proof that what teach is real. (Or… real enough to function and propagate through time. So… good enough for the pragmatists!)

Same! Suddenly I'm finding myself being able to conjure up his voice to solve problems in the way that my mind thinks he would. And that's a great example of what he talked about when he described how our figures of imagination are distillations of patterns of behaviour that we have observed. After observing Peterson for such a long time, we have been able to capture and distil the living idea of him into our own minds. And it's not just a mere screenplay because this figure has actual psychological utility, which is remarkable.

@DavyCreation
@DavyCreation 3 жыл бұрын
@@DANITHERIPPER true, however, and Jordan also says this, Christ is the only person that incarnates the idea of God (is a myth) and is historical in same time. Even his resurrection seems to be historical but we could debate this of course. The other religions like mythology, boudhism,... are only « stories » that have the same archetype than the Bible and Jordan explains it of course. But I know the fact that Christ is also something like a myth and same time something objectiv let Jordan perplexed. And well, Judaïsm, christianity and Islam is something else, they are also connected, but if you look into it, I’d say that it started to screw up with the creation of christianity in the 3rd century and then Islam started because they screwed up everything. I think Christianity deformed quite a lot (because of paganism) and seperated itself from Israel/the jews, and now since few decades, even centuries, there is a comeback to the rooth. And I even think you can find this connection of these religions in the hebrew bible, like archetypes of person/names/concept that incarnate them. For example some of the Jews say that Christianity comes from Edom, a people that has been born from Esav, the brother of Jacob, so Christianity is the brother of Israel kind of, but not the people of God (im talking about the Religion, not the christians necessarily). So I think there are a lot of wolves that are leading the churches that are not helping the ewes that are in them. That’s also the critics that Jesus did to the religious people at his time, and I think he would do the same today. But well, just my point of view, the story of Christ looks to be a bit more than the others myth or religions. Im very sceptical but that historical part makes me believe he is the window/the truth on the transcendental.

Christianity minus the fundamentalism and creationism. This can play well with other belief systems; and this is why atheists are drawn to him to the point that there are threads started *by atheists* about how JBP "converted" them; and then atheists commenting that, even if they don't "get religion" and are still atheists, that they can look at the Bible (and Christianity as a whole by extension) from a different light instead of writing it off outright.

khaii13 I just started going to a bible study group at my uni. I was straight up with them that I was an athiest but am a "Christian supremacist" of sorts, who was looking to see how well I could articulate my idea of Christianity based on extrapolations from Jordans work. We started with Romans, 1:1-18 and they seemed to think that what I was saying was a reasonable interpretation. Basically that to have faith you have to act out that faith or it's meaningless, I hope that faith in the idea of Christ's divinity in the abstract instead of literal, is enough to get me through judgement, but if not, I will have lived a "good" life so that may have to be enough.

VASILIKI well of course. It belongs to all of humanity now. But on another note, do you like the Jewish "new testament" equivalent, the rabbinical traditions and such or the Christian version better? The Jews seemed to have kept their stuff more exclusive and the Christians seemed to want to spread the word, as far as I can tell.

*Ameranthe Kekistani* In agreement of your interpretation of Roman's 1:1-18. Though if you are gonna go that route, then maybe the letters of Peter, James, and john; along with most of the first three gospels would resonate with you more than the letters of Paul and his disciples (like Timothy). As for the term "Christian supremacist", that thing got me curious. Care to expound? And also elaborate on your experiences on how you are received in the Bible study group after being straight with them with your atheism if you don't mind.

I personally was able to quit smoking after my third time taking mushrooms. The first two trips were pretty much recreational with friends, but the third and most profound was done as some form of self therapy. I did them alone, and would probably describe the first 50% of the trip as horrifying. I don't want to get into it but somehow I was able to empathise with the people in my memories on a level so intense that I felt as if I were them. I felt vulnerable, and I rememberd those people in my life who were less fortunate and are no longer alive. Those deep emotions I felt made me deicde to never touch another cigarette again. I was surprised at how easy it was to quit. It was almost like I didn't even have cravings anymore. The best way I have come up with to explain this is that I just "knew" I wasn't going to smoke again. It was just a fact and it played out like one. Kind of hard to explain but hopefully anyone who read this will catch my drift.

I'm was raised a Christian and I remain a very strong one to this day. I wasn't born with faith. I was a skeptic until I was 23 and I was going through a lot. I asked for faith on my knees and and God took over. I decided to get baptized and although it wasn't immediate, my attitudes and heart slowly changed. I feel that God gives us all the chance to find Him in different ways. He can use anything. Some people are stubborn and only really find God in their rock bottom. I feel blessed as I've just never had an addictive personality but I took a little too high dose of LSD once. I could feel the true absence of God's grace that the demons feel. It was the darkest and coldest, most forgotten and bitter sadness I had ever encountered and it increased my faith. Drugs can open a portal in the mind and these days, I like to keep those portals closed.

I really believe that this lecture is the most profound from the Biblical Series, and maybe even all his lectures. More often than in most talks, he pauses, stumbles, and takes time to phrase his thoughts, and you can tell it really takes all his mind and focus to properly formulate his ideas, which are so deep they almost cannot be articulated. He is almost in the realm of the esoteric, the shamanic hidden knowledge about our consciousness, whilst trying to stay rational and academic in his ideas. You can really see he is pushing his own abilities of articulating specific ideas, whilst simultaneously trying to "stay on topic" and give structure and direction to the lecture in general. Truly a piece of art.

I abused psychedelics dozens of times as a teen and young adult. I had fun but never saw the deeper meaning. I went on to become a heroin addict(not because of the psychedelics) and by the time i was in my mid 30s i had lost everything that ever meant anything to me. I had just gotten out of jail last june and was living in one of the local dope motels trying to change and stay clean in spite of my surroundings and not being very successful except to pass tests for probation when a friend gave me a huge dose of psylocybin that ended up with me locked in the bathroom in my insalubrious crack den motel bathroom with the lights off laying in the bottom of the shower when things i still cant articulate came rushing to me. The next day for the first time in my adult life i was able to say no when i was around drugs. I wasnt really sure why or how i just knew that it was the trip that changed me. A few months later i had finally moved out of that shit hole and found a place of my own for the first time in years. Another friend happened to stop by with some acid and the next thing i knew i was 60 feet up in a tree looking down at an inky black abyss below me and nothing but the stars above me. I should have been terrified but , and i know this is insane but i was linked with that tree and the sky above and i had a strange experience that one would almost call an out of body experience. I wasn't looking down on my self or anything but my mind and consciousness were independent of my body. I climbed down, went home went to sleep and woke up and other than some cuts and bruises i kind of just forgot about it. A few months later i was stone sober at another hotel but a nice one this time for a liaison with a girl sans my intrusive roommate. We finished the evening, she left , and i went to lye down and got on here to find a good lecture to fall asleep to. I had never heard of Terrence McKenna before that night but for some reason i turned him on. I began to listen and he started saying things and explaining things he could only have known if he had seen and felt the things i did in that bathroom and in that tree. He made me realize that there was something there and whether it was my own mind telling me things i didnt know i knew or some gaps in my consciousness being bridged by some higher power, there was something there. I went(sober mind you) into what i suppose was a transcendental state which i still cant explain. I saw myself as a boy and even though we didn't exchange words we said so much. He let me know that no matter who or what i lost that i finally found me and that it was going to be better than ok from now on. I saw daughter, who was taken from me because i was locked up and had no family to take her while i was gone. She was my world and it broke me, no it fucking killed me and who i was before. It was something i thought was going to be the beginning of the end. We were sitting on a park bench again i was stone sober, and like younger me we didn't talk but she smiled at me and took my hand and at that moment i knew that it was ok, it was what we were both supposed to be doing. After that everything changed. I have been truly happy and at peace for the first time in my whole life. My search then lead me to JP and he opened my eyes mind and heart to so many things i never knew i knew and so many things i never even imagined. McKenna lead me to the path and JP has guided me down it. I owe them and those psychedelics i never knew had purpose a debt of gratitude ill never be able to pay.

I tried 8 grams of shrooms and had a psychotic break during the peak. I don’t remember much from when I was actually peaking, other than throwing up and “coming back” suddenly, as if I had just woken up for the first time in my life. It was the most surreal experience I’ve ever had. I came out of the ego death way too soon, and didn’t know how to deal with going from feeling like I was God and one with everything in the universe, to suddenly being myself again. I puked up the shrooms and I think that ended the trip prematurely, and I just haven’t been the same ever since. I sometimes have these moments where I feel like I’m the only person that actually exists, and everyone and everything else is just a projection of my mind. It’s so incredibly lonely and depressing, and I want to try to talk about it but I feel like there isn’t a point because nobody else is real anyway, they’re just going to respond in ways that are projected by my own mind. It’s a very dangerous and terrifying place to be in, and when I have those moments I just freeze and don’t know what to do. I often wonder if there’s even a point to doing anything at all, because since I’m the “only consciousness” that truly exists, I’m going to continue existing whether I do anything or not, and I’m never going to die because I’m just going to come back as someone else, or even just restart this life from birth once I die. I suffer from some kind of fear of eternity. The thought that this just goes on forever horrifies me. There is no end to it. Our consciousness just continues existing even after death because energy cannot be created or destroyed. So I just sit there sometimes, wondering how many times I’ve lived this life or other lives, wondering how old my consciousness is, and most importantly wondering what the point of existence is. I find myself wondering what is going to happen after death, and why? Why does reality exist? Where did it come from? Is anything real? Am I real? I kind of rambled a bit at the end there, but that is just about the only way I can describe what I’ve been going through for the last 3 months. Since going through this, I’ve turned to the Bible and starting seeking God and I’ve finally found Him. In the process, I understood the existence of satan and what his existence means in the context of my life and my experiences. I realize now that what I experienced during that trip was the worst form of spiritual attack that a person can imagine. I was presented with the belief that I was God, which is the ultimate form of blasphemy, and was beginning to believe that since I was God, I could do anything I wanted to anyone I wanted, and there would be no consequences because I’m the moral authority. What this quickly morphed into was, I could do every evil or messed up thing that I could ever imagine doing, I could commit every sin in the book, do every drug on the face of the Earth if I wanted, say anything I wanted, and treat people however I wanted. I could also do nothing if I wanted, and could even kill myself if I wanted, because I’d just come back. And looking back on this now, I realize just how evil all of that was, and it’s obvious those were lies straight from the devil himself. Of course he wants us to believe we are God. That is the highest form of idolatry and blasphemy that there could possibly be, and not only that, it is a one way trip to an endless pit of loneliness, depression, sorrow, and eventual suicide due to those very things. It is nihilism in its truest form, and I now believe psychedelics will open a person up to this kind of spiritual attack and influence them to believe these things which would quickly lead them to destruction. DO NOT take psilocybin, or any hallucinogens, or any drugs whatsoever. There is no way to directly reach God while on this Earth. The only way to be in the presence of God is to follow His Word and live righteously and be allowed into Heaven, and you can only do that after passing from this life. If anyone tells you they spoke to God or felt His presence while on any hallucinogenic drug, they are spreading the same kind of lies I experienced during my trip, and are going to lead you down a path of destruction if you choose to listen to them. Read the Bible for yourself and seek God. He is the only way.

David Chorak David Chorak You have a contradiction. By definition, him being pragmatic, means he is being practical. And what is practical is, by definiton, what is useful in the real world. So pragmatism is automatically useful for the real world beyond just theory. So I don’t know what your actual complaint is, Peterson is more than a theory guy, evident by his newest book which offers a set of rules which is intended to enable one towards a better version of themselves(litterally and tangibly in the world via results) and therefore(this is the more theory part of his book) a better world as a whole, because as a piece of the whole we, upon improving, better it automatically.

Either way, I think you are absolutely correct about the pragmatism bit, and honestly I only disagree with you about the ideological factor. Dr.Peterson most definitely has a straight forward, no BS, won't sugarcoat or withhold details, no matter how painful or terrifying they might be. In my honest opinion he embodies a wide range of ideologies and his message encompasses many avenues of reason and logic, yet the end result is ultimately the same either way.

I see a lot more concern over JP's overall message in this comment section compared to previous videos. Maybe he is just getting to the point where he is reaching a broader audience now. We have to realize that we live in a society that profits off of the lies you believe. JP is not your typical double-minded fool. Stop thinking he is. He's obviously thought a lot about really difficult subject matter, and he's helping a lot of people right now. Is he getting everything right? Probably not because it's not like he's trying to decipher which Starbucks frappé is the best flavor. He's tackling the questions of our very existence. He is moving the conversation forward which is incredibly refreshing in this day and age. Stop fearing moving forward. If you're worried about this becoming a "cult" begin thinking for yourself what can you do to lead the best life possible. That is actually what JP is trying to make you do!! I keep seeing deeper into all the artistic themes of my culture that I used to just accept and appreciate subconsciously. Incredible. It's like when I started learning Spanish and I started noticing all the roots and meanings being interwoven everywhere and in all sorts of languages. Thanks for my education JBP!

After discovering JP years ago everything I experience: music, movie, videogame, show, book etc. Has dramatically changed. Now I can see more clearly the patterns that have always been present. Way before mankind came into "existence". I always joke with my wife that JP has ruined my ability to mindlessly enjoy stuffs. Now I see patterns everywhere. And they're all somehow portraying the same things. The best way to describe it in layman's terms is when Neo resurrected in the original movie. And I'm so thankful, but at the same time terrified now that I realise that it's a beautiful and very delicate system. And that every single person on this planet can have such a huge impact on existence itself.

He often makes the point that the archetypal stories that present themselves in our arts hyperlink conceptually to other works. The most hyperlinked or referenced works are what we (as a human race) think of as the classics. This is why he relies on myths of antiquity, philosophy and literary classics so often to help clarify the analysis of the archetypal patterns. What is is mind blowing is to see him do this with the biblical text so profoundly without imposing religious dogma.

As a 59 year old educator, I was forced out of my top paying job as a school administrator. I took early retirement in order to stop the school-place abuse that was making me mentally, physically ill. I stumbled across Dr. Petersons series. Being a person of faith decided to give it a go. He has helped me with my chaos. Thank you Doc! If you ever want to do a series on midlife crisis’ or midlife existential crisis I’m your gal. The amount of chaos I brought and the world brought on me in 14 months would have driven an introvert to end it all-being an extrovert, I am clawing up the mountain and avoiding the dragon fires. I will survive. My story-I’m sure is much like many. Thank you. My struggles growing up provided me with the armor needed to continue. 🌹🙏♥️🕊

Good morning, Doc. Would just like you to be aware that this past weekend I had my wife and 2 children baptized, due to, in part, your lectures. @Slewfy
@Slewfy 5 жыл бұрын
In Biblical Christianity, one makes a personal declaration of faith in the redeeming power of Christ's sacrifice BEFORE being baptized. "Getting your wife and children baptized" is not a personal decision on their part. They are not believers because you got them baptized. Any genuine Bible believing church would not baptize them without a personal confession of faith on each one's part. Faith is personal. You cannot have it for someone else. I would question the biblical veracity of the particular denomination you are attending.

@Kvothe Windrunner Children don't have a say in whether they want to eat? You never came in contact with a human child, did you? And you could at least try to draw an analogy which isn't completely retarded. Languages? How can teaching children languages be bad for them? Religion is completely different in it is teaching children what to think, instead of how to think. Luckily, most normal children realize how idiotic religion is by the time they're 12.

I think what's so appealing about Peterson is that he's reopening the door to mysticism in a way that's rational. I think it's a fact that we have a fascination with unknown or mystical but for the past however many years all we've had is religion, which to a large degree goes against our sense of the rational, or the new age druggie mysticism which is just as boring in many ways. Petersons reintroduction of the old mysticism through a rational lense re kindles and satisfies to a degree that age old desire for the mystical by breaking it down in a way that makes sense. It's a very strong antidote to nihilism that I think could save civilization from complete philosophical degeneration. He's doing "God's work" if you ask me.
