The Saturation “Tip” is very useful. It is quite hard to get my head around the fact that using Contrast has an impact on Saturation. One tip I learned from a KZbin Colourist called Cullen Kelly, was to turn a Node into a HSL colour space. It’s a great way of subtly bringing saturation under control.

The way I personally adjust the saturation without affecting the exposure is > right clip on the node > composite mode > saturation... so I can use gamma or gain to lower or raise the saturation without affecting the exposure, maybe this is it wrong method, but it works like this for me

Terrific tips as always. Some of these make it simpler to figure out what DR is doing in the background when you do something and it comes out not quite how you would expect it to. One of the things I always wrestle with is just how much to do when color grading. I try to do the true to life look and sparingly use color and highlights to bring out a specific areas to make it more obvious or pronounced to the viewer. Rather like a documentary minimalist style. Even after all this time, still learning and evolving in my use of DR Studio. Thanks again for your tips and tricks they keep the creative juices flowing! 👍

Thanks for all the great tips man. I use the Mid/Detail slider in almost every single project I do and set it to around -30. It makes skintones look so good in my opinion!

Extra advice for Tip 7: In case an effect does not have a global setting, just got to the Key Tab, and there, lower the output. gain to your liking. 1.00 equals 100% 0 equals 0%.

Instead of Mid/Details I often use effects 'Contrast Pop' or 'Texture Pop" (together with a simple mask), it gives better results when refining the face. The Color Compressor effect also helps a lot here (with simple mask too).

In your tip number 4, when you are adjusting the intensity of the exposure you can use, on the node that you use for the exposure this tip > right clip on the node > composite mode > luminosity.... then you use your preferred tool "High Dynamic Range" or "Primaries Color Wheels " and so that way you don't change the saturation when you adjust the exposure...I hope my poor English is clear

Hi Joris when you apply the color corrections with the adjustment clip, do you drop in the Lut as well?

Love your videos!!! One question. Have you colour calibrated your computer monitor so that you can use Davinci Resolve to more accurately colour correct and colour grade? I am not interested in getting a BMD Declink and an external reference monitor, but I do want to achieve "pretty accurate" colour with my system. Note that I have a GTX3080 graphics card and I use Windows 10

Yes, I'm working on a calibrated monitor.

Thanks for your quick reply. I have been looking on the DaVinci Resolve forums (BMD) and they all say that DaVinci Resolve will not give correct colours in the DaVinci user interface even if the monitor is calibrated. They say the only way is via a Declink and external calibrated ii reference monitor. Is this your experience? Your advice is greatly appreciated
@JorisHermans
@JorisHermans Ай бұрын
In my opinion, decklink and reference monitors are complete overkill unless you're a big production house working for tv and stuff like that. A decent monitor + calibration device will give you more than sufficiently correct colours. I haven't run into any problems with my setup.
