There is something completely unique about Carreras' voice he was a world away from any other tenor. It has a very distinctive timbre and warmth almost a dark colour to it, unlike say Pavarotti whose sound to me was bright and metallic. He was incredibly successful from a very early age much earlier than most opera singers. Listening to this when he would have been what 26 or 27 it is not hard to understand why he was so successful early in his career.

Stunningly beautiful voice. Verdi's "Un Giorno di Regno" embodies youth, love and innocence. This opera deserves to be heard much more. This recording featuring Sr. Carreras along Jessye Norman and all others, is one of my very favorite complete opera recordings.

I have had this recording for a long time, and recently re-acquainted myself with it. Verdi's only opera buffo aside from Falstaff, the one at the end of his career. This was his second opera. Carreras is in very fine voice here, on the top of his form, I think. The year is 1974. I've never see photos of him when he was so young and dashing as those in this slideshow. Jessye Normal also sounds wonderful on this recording.

Pensare che la prima rappresentazione di quest'opera fu un flop clamoroso ! ...e che il giovane Verdi era in un periodo a dir poco terribile ...in poco tempo perse la moglie e i due figli neonati !
