Jose Mourinho describes Ashley Barnes tackle on Nemanja Matic as 'criminal' on Goals On Sunday

Here's some more from Jose Mourinho's appearance on Goals on Sunday. After questioning Sky Sports' description of Diego Costa's actions, Jose said that Ashley Barnes' tackle on Nemanja Matic was 'criminal' and could've ended his career.
Mourinho also gave his views on the potential identical bans both players could receive.

He has a point. Barnes' tackle was horrific and how he hasn't received retrospective action is another rightful justification for people to point that rules need to be changed in regards to retrospective punishment. He's also got every right to point out the bandwagon that's been rolling against Costa. There's always a scapegoat for everyone with power in our national game, albeit officials, journalists etc. Suarez went in the summer, so now everyone needs to a new toy to hammer for a while. Although you wish Jose was more consistent with his analysis of challenges when it comes to his own.

Barnes should definitely have faced a ban for the tackle on Matic; Whether he went for the ball or not, it was a bad tackle and Matic is lucky he didn't break his ankle! Of course Matic shouldn't have his red card rescinded because of his reaction on Barnes, yet I know that Barnes would have had a black eye if he did that too me in a match! So I can see why Matic reacted how he did (and I can't blame him), but everyone knows you can't do that: both players deserve bans. And Jose is a great manager, but he defended Costa when he stamped on Can and Skrtel so you can't sympathise for him much: I would only sympathise with him if Matic's career was ended in that tackle.

Crazy how everyone here is quick to say Barnes's tackle wasn't intentional when a month ago everyone was calling for Diego Costa's head when he "stamped" two Liverpool plays and there was no proof of intent..... While Barnes had numerous reckless challenges on the day and everyone is quick to defend him on a tackle that could have ended someone career. The extreme bias against Chelsea is unbecoming see things for what they are, there is absolutely no way this is equal treatment.

Mitac jumped up sprightly enough after such a career ending bone breaking challenge and felt well enough to commit violent behaviour on another player from behind. wasn't even a tackle. Ash Barnes was passing the ball. his foot followed through from passing and matic's leg came across and got caught under his studs. Mourinho is a word class manager but at times, if not most of the time this season he has made himself look very ignorant. Saying that this tackle is "criminal" is just beyond pathetic when it was just an unfortunate clash. Diego Costa stamping on 2 Liverpool players on the other hand, is criminal. and he was lucky to get only a 3 match ban. could of easily been more. As soon as he lifted his standing leg, it was a serious tackle. Any soccer player (don't even have to be professional) knows when to pull out of a tackle and how to avoid possibly dangerous contact and Barnes did not do that. His standing leg was the only thing keeping him from plowing through Matic's leg and instead of pivoting away he lifts it which gives him more momentum. I am positive that is an intentional act. Just put yourself in the situation, if you play soccer then you know that it is absolutely possible to make split second decisions to pull out of a tackle you can end up badly. Lifting that leg is a clear sign that he intended to make the tackle (notice I'm not saying that he intended to break Matic's leg, but he intended to follow through on the tackle).

Matic rushed in from Barnes' blindside to nick the ball away and you can SEE on the video that Barnes has absolutely no idea he was there at all. It wasn't a "tackle" or a "challenge", it was a pass that Matic intercepted but got caught by Barnes' follow through. That's really it.

Agree with every word, the FA simply have to use retrospective punishment or else it indicates that there is a bias based on reputation, if Diego Costa or Lee Cattermole had committed that tackle there would be mass outrage! However, I don't think Barnes went in with intent, it's just a very dangerous late tackle, and I refuse to justify Matic's reaction, but I understand the reason behind it. But there should be some advancement in in-game technology to prevent this happening in the future to other teams, we're all football fans who want a fair contest, not controversial decisions which can ruin games and in some cases even league positions.

The FA need to sort this out, football has changed massively over the last decade and they haven't introduced the technology needed into the game yet. It's bloody 2015!!!! I think it's disgraceful they only introduced goal line technology recently when it was needed years ago. I understand it is difficult to integrate it into football, but other sports have done it successfully and are now, technologically, miles ahead of football, and don't even have half the fan base this sport has. It's time for a massive change hopefully the new FIFA president will do something about it.
