I happened to know the son, Salvatore "Bill" Bonnano. This was during the time he penned his book "Honor Thy Father" and co-authored by Gay Talese. It was made into a successful movie. Bill, himself, was articulate and well spoken. We had some very interesting conversations. I found him calm and engaging. He, however, was not happy with the tactics the FBI used against him and his family. All in all, quite an enlightening look into this history from his point of view..... He passed away in 2008.

Frank Costello was the inspiration for the Vito Corleone character. Brando studied films of Costello and emulated him, right down to the raspy voice. Costello liked to fly, "under the radar." hiding in plain sight, inconspicuously. Bonano courted publicity.
@davidmellish32953 ай бұрын
Erm NO that's who the actor studied, nothing to do with the inspiration for the character. You do realise it was a book first and they said he was the inspiration for the character, so that's who Mario Puzzo was thinking about when he created the character of Don Vito Corrleone. Then when they made the film,Marlon Brando studied Frank Costello to see the best way to play the character
@pelotonpro0483 ай бұрын
I only referred to Brando and the way he portrayed the character. Because of directeurship by Coppola the way the character was portrayed became more significant than the way the character was written.

The character Corleone, both in book and movie, is a pastiche of several times mafia chiefs.
@pelotonpro0483 ай бұрын
@@murrayscott9546 We are in agreement on that. The voice and, "The Ambassador," persona were obviously borrowed from Costello. No other mob figure had that veneer of legitimacy.
@JustMeNoOther3 ай бұрын
@@murrayscott9546 You are right, but the inspiration for the character was Vito Cascio Ferro AKA Don Vito, he belonged to the general sicilian mafia structure and he is portrayed as capo di tutti capi but when he was alive that nickname did not exists. However, the second name of the character, Corleone, is taken from the most ruthless and violent group of mobsters from the little town with the same name in Sicily. Corleone mafia was new during that time and it was considered as a brutal bunch of beasts, and was not worthy of belonging to the Cosa Nostra. In the end, the Corleone faction ended to own the sicilian mafia. The book is full of winks and to understand it, the reader should know a lot of history about criminal organizations in Italy. The movie is so romanticised at the grade that portraits the criminal life as a glamorous way of life, and tons of winks were missing and details. Once the public read the book, the movies are almost worthless.

Good post, that's precisely what I came to say. Ray Patriarca of the New England chapter would be a top contender for "most evil". I spent part of a summer in early 70's, age 12-ish outside Providence, Rhode Island with one very cool cat I believe was acting boss while Patriarca served time. I'd spent the remainder of that summer reading The Godfather, Honor Thy Father (Bonanno family bio), and The Valachi Papers. There was one unforgettable moment in the club my (birth) godfather was gigging in. Red velvet walls and black trim, lights dimmed way down, the elderly man seemed to be glaring at me for extended periods. I asked my godfather who that was....... he was Gino the Irish I knew of from "The Valachi Papers". Can't find anything more about him, might have been wondering if it was me glaring at him :) :) Joe Bonanno marched to a slightly different drummer than the other Dons...... he believed diplomacy and absolute facts were FAR better for coexistence and business among the families than knee-jerk bloodshed. Good call, amigo.

One of my closest friends, John Pianno (named misspelled) was the king of Buick salesmen, lived at 35 Park Ave. He was there when 1 shot rang-out, against the sidewalk, and Joe was ushered into a gypsy cab.. . . . Never to be seen for 17 months, 6 days, and 3 hours, until the outside of Fed-Plaza, in lower Manhattan. Joe was honest. He was held outside of Niagara, NY. A subboyb of Buffalor. The term of the Grand Jury was about to expire.. . . and it did. Before they could re-convene, it all washed away. Joe was smarter.. . . MUCH smarter. He went to Arizoner.
