@@joe18750 Well, my immediate answer is that it is the country I know best, having lived in five of its major cities. Plus I read American newspapers and watch mostly American television, although not frequently. I cannot speak directly to what people are thinking in other countries. The U.S. has always been a big (if not the biggest) exponent of capitalist materialism and has an enormous appetite for consumer goods, including very transient forms of entertainment. But to your point... other countries have become just as fixated on the acquisition of objects that, by their possession, obscure or obliterate consideration of a higher level of human existence. Do you think other countries are worse than the U.S. in this regard?

I enjoyed this talk, thanks much! However, the Mandukya Upanishad, which delves deeply into Om/Aum, refers to the Cosmic Spirit Brahman (with almost no vowels, BRHMN). Om as taught in that Upanishad has nothing to do with Shiva. But of course, we add on Om to the beloved Shiva manthra, Om-Namah-Shivaaya. Sri Campbell was a master Mythologist and also had great spiritual insight. I just picked up a book of his "The Power of Myth" the other day from Barnes and Noble. I have three other books of his too.

Shaivites - especially Kashmiri Shaivites - view Shiva as Brahman, beyond all attributions or concepts, the formless all pervasive absolute. OM is energy - motion, creative, vibration of air as sound or internally as in silence the vibration (energy) of consciousness. OM pervades (as Campbell mentions) ALL that exists. You cant have just static consciousness alone, and nor would energy (motion, vibration) or anything at all exist without consciousness. Brahman is the Union of Shiva & Shakti (consciousness & energy) but in Shaivism Shiva is the same thing as Brahman.

Another extraordinary example of the latent HINDUPHOBIA in Western liberal scholars. An old-school orientalist like Campbell can speak admiringly about Hindu concepts, but he hesitates to say the word "Hindu". It is sad to see how prevalent Hinduphobia is in academia. These scholars can, from a distance, intellectually admire the depth of insights provided to them by Hindus, but they are disgusted by practicing Hindus who live these ideals.
