I purchased this J Dixon #6 pricking iron from a lady who's grandfather apparently had it in his shed for the last 20 years. She told me that he had worked for Tanner Krolle before he retired.
Apart from surface rust and some light pitting, it appears to have seen little use. The prongs didn't show signs of wear and the head had no mushrooming.
This isn't a how-to video, so I haven't included any info on techniques or tools. This is simply a fun video showing an old tool being bought back to work again.

I think these things make me regret investing in diamond irons. Beautiful stitching!

Hi Phillip, great video! What brand of thread did you use for the sample stitch at the end of the video?

Any advice as to where to look for vintage leatherworking tools? I'm a woodworker, and old WW tools are abundant. When I look on eBay for vintage pricking irons and such there seems to be few if any

I wish I could tell you there was a reliable place, but most of these tools are kept by people who don't use them and get snapped up fast by other collectors who don't use them either. Pains me. Ebay and a keen pair of eyes is still your best bet.

@@LeathercraftMasterclass Shame. While woodworkers deal with that frustration too with tools (and lumber itself sometimes as well), it's definitely clear the situation is more extreme with regards to leather-working tools. Intuitively, there must have been a lot more joiners, coopers, cabinetmakers, carpenters, etc. than saddlers, cobblers, and the like to leave tools behind.

It is very heavy due to being such a large chunk of steel, but I absolutely love it. Feels bomb proof. Glad you enjoyed it!
