Humorously known as the man who could never find the perfect situation to attack, Joseph E. Johnston was loved by his men, but criticized by his contemporaries, like Jefferson Davis. Nevertheless, Johnston was the highest ranking United States officer to join the Confederacy and he commanded both of the Confederacy's principle field armies, the Army of Northern Virginia and the Army of Tennessee. In this episode, he "attempts" to save Vicksburg from capitulation.

Johnson was not the McClellan of the South. In contrast, Johnson's army was actually outnumbered by his enemy's best army before Jackson and Atlanta. In 1864, all the South had to do was not suffer a major defeat until the November elections. Then McClellan himself would likely have been president and negotiated a peace. Jefferson Davis lost the war when he replaced him with Hood. Just like Hitler lost when he didn't let Von Paulas retreat at Stalingrad. Johnson was right; he followed Von Clauswitz theory ; the best path towards victory was for the South was to keep its armies from being destroyed. He surrendered after Lee and with more troops. He understood the basics of winning a war better than Lee. How many battles did the NVA win against the USA? Who won that war?

Lee was aggressive because he had 2 years or less to force a truce. He almost did. Jefferson Davis had an ego that would not win a war of attrition. He should have replaced Bragg with Johnston in the west. Johnston and Lonstreet were envious of Lee's godlike reverance.

Johnston and Davis were in a contest to see which one was the biggest PIA. Davis wins since he fired Johnston. It's interesting that both Sherman and Grant thought that Johnston was a superior general.

From this series it seems to me that General Johnson was more a General chef of staff than a field general throughout the war. Like modern comparison of that from ww2 forward.

Davis was a martinet and his ego could not withstand criticism contructive or otherwise, Johnston was not blameless here but I would side with him even though him letting the issue become political was detrimental for all parts. The constant politicking present in the higher spheres of army command in both sides of the war is a most interesting subject, not much has changed in that regard more than 1,5 centuries later.

The Atlanta Campaign was always one of the phases of the War that most fascinated me, even before I found out I had a direct ancestor who took part in it. Johnston was brilliant at winning the hearts of his men and cared deeply for their welfare, but was too hesitant to go on the offensive, even when it was vital for him to do so, as well as always being at odds with his Commander in Chief. In short, he was the "McClellan of the South"!

I don’t think that’s a fair assessment. Johnston’s army was in a sad state of affairs compared to McClellan’s. The men fighting for the Army of Tennessee were not as well fed or armed as their Union counterparts but they were fighting fiercely for their country.

@@jackzimmer6553 "was in a sad state of affairs compared to McClellan’s" I mean McClellan rebuilt the AOP from shattered components and expiring enlistments after Second Manassas, so maybe the difference you're highlighting the material difference which I'd agree with. McClellan had resources to use and asked for more, Johnston had few resources and asked for more, but so that's indeed a difference.
