He's likely seen people die from short falls... If you're in the field, land wrong and shatter your tibia and fibula (the two bones in your lower leg), you can easily die from infection and/or exposure (and that's beside the risk of a military situation and being behind enemy lines).

I like how Joseph feels super authentic right now. Like no acting. Other actors in this sitch, would either be %100 up for anything Grylls does just for the cameras or they exaggerate their fear and act dramatic. This show isn't about bear grylls, it's about the guest. Bear takes them out of their comfort zone and exposes them to challenges in nature that may occur. It is staged, but it still is very helpful to those who want to know what to do in a survival situation.

But something valuable that regular people will get from the show is the idea to think outside of their comfort zones. "Hey, there is a rotting corpse...
