So, since I still get comments on this almost 4 year old video, I'll leave it here. Yes, in this video I call the movie a sequel. And that was a massive mistake in wording. Since this came after the Prince of Egypt (film release wise, not biblical story wise), that's just the mindset I entered with. And I used a term called "prequel sequel" which I heard from somewhere and just rolled with it. This is a video I don't look upon all that fondly for a few reasons, but i'm leaving it up because I think the discussion is fun. I like the people who come around and share their thoughts.

For everyone confused if this is a sequel, in the Bible it’s actually before Moses’s story which would make this movie a prequel. That’s why I always felt the non violent slavery was present, the Bible weighs that the treatment of slaves was really based on who was in power which would make sense after Joseph came into power slaves would be treated better. Then after years the people of Egypt after Joseph just saw slaves as hazards that were there to serve not people. In the context of the order the movies came out it would be a sequel.
@yarpen264 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's a straight-up prequel, not "prequel-sequel". No piece of action happens after The Prince of Egypt but this movie came later. Therefore: a prequel. Case closed.

A. This movie was my childhood. I’ve memorized all the songs B. I thought Miracle Child was actually a pretty good song C. In the Bible, Joseph declined Zuleika’s advances, not bcuz he was a pussy, but because it was a sin to f**k your master’s wife if you were a dude D. Joseph was intentionally given red hair to look like his uncle, Esau. I just thought it made him look like the Hebrew Hercules. E. A BIG inaccuracy in the movie is that in the fact that in the Bible, Reuben, or in some versions, Judah, didn’t want to sell Joseph. F. Most depictions of this story show Benjamin being born while Joseph was with his family in Canaan G. Jacob walks with a cane sometimes not bcuz he’s old, but rather in the Bible he wrestled an angel who dislocated his hip H. The slavery aspect wasn’t shown as that bad to show that God was looking out for Joseph. In the Bible it says that god blessed Potiphar’s house, and Joseph, sparing him from the intensive labor.

As someone who grew up going to church, Prince of Egypt and King of Dreams were amongst my favorite movies growing up. Prince of Egypt obviously has much better animation and music, kinda giving Hunchback of Notre Dame vibes, but I also found Rameses to be a much more interesting character than most of the cast in Joseph, mainly because he wasn’t truly an evil person, he was raised by an abusive father who set unrealistic expectations for him as the future pharaoh of Egypt which is what unfortunately slowly broke his relationship with his brother and best friend. I think one of the main problems in Joseph is the fact most of the side characters like his brothers, parents, Potifar, the butler, and even Joseph’s wife and children don’t appear that much in the movie. His wife specifically is only in a couple of scenes to establish her as a love interest, she doesn’t actually really help Joseph overcome his revenge and bitterness against his brothers. And in the end of the movie, Rachel doesn’t appear either because in the Bible Rachel passed away after giving birth to Benjamin. I do really enjoy the moral of Joseph forgiving his brothers and understanding their pain they put their father through, that their jealousy of Joseph never left, it only made their lives worse and further hurt their family. I just think the narrative and storytelling with Prince of Egypt is much more complex because we have to watch Moses slowly grow apart from his brother and best friend, and unfortunately his actions lead to his former home being slowly destroyed. The part Moses weeps of Rameses’s son being slain as a result of the final plaque is heartbreaking. The Prince of Egypt is more personal and told through Moses’s eyes, while Joseph’s is more told through simply following his journey from Canaan to Egypt and going from slave to second in command of the most powerful kingdom in the world at the time. Also, I never saw Joseph as a spoiled brat. Jacob treated him as the golden child and treated him like a prince, even making him learn different languages and other things only children of nobility would be allowed, while his brothers were destined to be lowly shepherds and farmers for the rest of their lives. Oh course this was going to create a rift and make Joseph frustrated he didn’t get to have fun with his brothers, instead they treated him like an outsider because of how jealous they were. I’d say Joseph was pretty darn humble for the all the crap he endured, including being thrown in a prison for the rest of his life. He gets mad at God to why his life has become so difficult, but its to show how the Lord has not abandoned him even in his darkest moments, and someday things will get better. And its nice to see Joseph not seek revenge against his brothers when he could’ve easily turned them into slaves or make them his personal slaves, forcing them to work the fields during the bad years or letting the Egyptians relax while they did all the work. Instead, Joseph embraces them as his family upon seeing they’re truly repentant of their sins and how much their jealousy tormented them even after they got rid of their bratty brother. Also, I’d say the songs were pretty darn good for a sequel. Obviously the soundtrack from the original movie was on an entirely different level, but I still think Give a Little More, Miracle Child and You Know Better Than I were still pretty good. Rachel’s song is also sweet, but a little short, as is her performance.

I feel like he was overthinking it when it came to slavery in this movie. First of all Joseph was a slave but he was the most trusted slave so I like to imagine that he got the kind of privilege to shield him away from the harshness of slavery and during the More You Take song segment I always believed that even if there were slaves there including other people they all had to come together to help out to get fully well prepared for the famine that befell Egypt or else everyone will be doomed. So of course it's a happy moment because everyone has come together to help each other out including the slaves.

You know, I would to see Dreamworks make an animated Christian movie about Job and how he lost EVERYTHING (his food source, his house, his family, his health, and nearly his life) all because God and Lucifer made a bet on whether Job was thankful to God because of all the nice things he has. Job's arc words are "The lord giveth and the lord taketh away." He dies as he says those words. God not only gave him his health and life back, but all of the things he lost and more. And God said to Lucifer "HA! Told ya! I told ya that Job still believes me! Pay me my $50!" Lucifer did, but he also convinced 1/3 of the population of Heaven to be on his side by spreading rumors that God has a gambling addiction by using his own creation. God evicted Lucifer out of the Pearly Gates Resort and now lives in a place that's like Florida, but with a dry heat, a smell of rotten eggs, and a Winter Wonderland on the first level of it that we know as Hell.

About the slavery part: In this point in time Israel has not been taken into slavery yet. so all their so-called slaves are normal low class Egyptian’s. so when Joseph request that his family comes and stays with him in Egypt, over the span of for about 400 years that is when Israel/ his family is in slaved and then the movie Moses prince of Egypt comes in and he delivers them from Egypt to their new Promiseland that God provides.
@charlesdeleo46083 жыл бұрын
9:00 actually, those scenes where people are doing menial labor is not slavery. Archaeologists now found that the pyramids and monumental structures in Egypt were actually built by free people working together, and not by slaves as Hollywood suggested. I mean, for goodness sake, they even went on strike in Ancient Egypt. For instance, one group of workers had a sit in because they ran out of makeup. And we know that one worker in the Valley of the Kings took some paid time off to brew his own beer.
@brandoncruise63983 жыл бұрын
The earlier part of Egyptian history didn’t have slavery in the way that it would be known for later. So you’re right, many if not most of the pyramids were built by the people under a strong form of national unity. However, by the time Moses came along entire cities had been built and/or rebuilt via the backs of slaves.

Prince of Egypt is an amazing movie and has amazing songs and animations. not disagreeing in that! those are fact hahaha. Tho I liked Joseph more. :) 1. I like the story better. personal opinion. I think the betrayal, the hurt behind it and the reunion and forgivesness for it was really strong shown. (prince of egypt as freedom more as a theme) How it hurted Joseph. One of the most hurtful things is to be brutally betrayed and sold by family. you his loneliness when he is on his way to egypt. He literally doesnt see them again for 20 years. At that moment he maybe thought it would be forever... 2. I really like how joseph is finding his way in live and learns different things. He learns to forgive. People say that he is to lighthearted to easy to forgive (looked fake), yes I think that it forgiving someone who hurt u, is the most difficult thing to do. But joseph learned a lot in prison and I the look of understanding he gives potifar. Even potifar is shocked that Joseph forgives him so easily. haha But forgives nis Joseph's point (a gift. And joseph does forgive potifar, because he understands why potifar did it. He forgave his brothers (althoug that took awhile! he send them back en imprisend SImeon and then fakes a robbery and blames benjamin lol), but he forgave them. because he saw his brothers where sorry and that they did change behaviour (they protected benjamin). Joseph understand it and he is moved by it. And he was angry, but he also loves his family and I think all he wanted to do is be with them again, but his anger was in the way. (It is such a beautiful scene and I could talk about about it for hours) I think It is so much more complex then people are portraying it!! 3. I also like how Joseph kind of was losing his way (in prison), but he keeps his faith and keeps growing as a person. 4. The beautifull dream scenes with Van Gogh Art!! 5. Joseph grows alot as a person. (A lot of characters in this movie actually). okay that aslo happend in moses but well nevermind haha 6. As for the slavery difference: It is before moses. Slaves were different viewed in that time and different treated. I do think it was a tiny bit weaked in joseph, but the most of it was that slaves were ''normal'' unpaid servants. And in Joseph we mostly just see house slaves. !!! P.S. .someone else in the comment said: sure but then again, the movie wasnt ABOUT how awful slavery was. Prince of Egypt was about that. King of Dreams is more about Joseph being betrayed by his family, and w.e else he goes through to learn to HEAL from that betrayal and how to forgive. (see point 6) I definitely agree with this! but is is more personal opinion. And bias, i guess. because i grew up with joseph and not with prince of egypt. haha Both movies are amazing! both in a unique and different way!!!

I know i'm commenting on a year old video but i just have to get this off my chest lol. I used to love both Prince of Egypt and Joseph: King of Dreams as a kid, so I rewatched them both. Prince of Egypt holds up so so well, imo all the songs are fucking amazing and the storyline was surprisingly complex and nuanced, which surprised me because as far as I knew it was just a kids movie that I didn't remember that well. Hell, I even thought (and this might be me being delusional) that God was portrayed in a morally ambiguous way. It's literally shown to the audience how he murders innocent Egyptian people, and how Moses is dying for his brother to put aside his pride so that the plagues can stop, because it pains him to see the people suffer. But you're also shown how that ultimately leads to good results, so to me, God was participating in war in a very human way. I think Prince of Egypt is ultimately a story about people, and it has incredibly well written characters. You can see how Ramses' world view came to be the way it is, why slavery is just a part of life for him. And the depiction of slavery is BRUTAL. All of these good things, are basically what sucks in Joseph. All the important emotional moments fell super fucking flat, the character arcs are boring, and the way slavery is portrayed?? hello??? I was speechless when Joseph forgave his former master just like that. It felt so fucking dumb and over-simplified. Same for when he forgave his brothers, it just didn't have any of the power moments like that had in Prince of Egypt. Everything feels like a watered-down version of what real life motivations, relationships, and emotions are, and I think that's why the way the characters behave seems so out of nowhere. Also why would you set up Jacob and Rachel being horrible parents and never touch on that ever again?? ever?? not even a little bit of remorse from Jacob for literally driving his children apart with his stupidity. And the animation is whack, plus the character designs are super fucking weird. (sorry if anything sounds weird i'm not a native speaker)

@@luanaferrari7636 That was Joseph’s character though, he learned to forgive in prison and be content with whatever his circumstances were, he learned to trust in God no matter where he was in life. If you want a character that takes revenge and lets things go in a tragedy they could have taken Samson Also he resembles Jesus because he forgives and then saves everyone. He is a very exemplary character that understands if it wasn’t for prison he wouldn’t move onto pharaohs palace, learning to trust God.

(!)1.someone else in the comment said: sure but then again, the movie wasnt ABOUT how awful slavery was. Prince of Egypt was about that. King of Dreams is more about Joseph being betrayed by his family, and w.e else he goes through to learn to HEAL from that betrayal and how to forgive. 2.And i dont think that the betrayal and the hurt it gave joseph (and how he treated his brothers) were watered down at all. Maybe other things, but that not. 3.Animation is not perfect because of lack of budget. they did had that budget for PoE. 4/ The forgivesness is one of Joseph strong suits. I know the forgivesness of potifar seemed easy of weak,. and es I think that it forgiving someone who hurt u, is the most difficult thing to do. But joseph learned a lot in prison and the look of understanding he gives potifar!!! Even potifar is shocked that Joseph forgives him so easily. haha And joseph does forgive potifar, because he understands why potifar did it. (and i know that sounds weak in writing) He forgave his brothers (although that took a while! he send them back en imprisend Simeon and then fakes a robbery and blames benjamin lol), but he forgave them. because he saw his brothers where sorry and that they did change behaviour (they protected benjamin). Joseph understand it and he is moved by it. And he was angry, but he also loves his family and I think all he wanted to do is be with them again, but his anger was in the way. (It is such a beautiful scene and I could talk about about it for hours) I think It is so much more complex then people are portraying it!! The forgiveness looked like it was easy or anything but instead of it being oversimplified, it is really complex, if that makes sense haha. 5. as for rachel and jacob being horrible parents. idk. Yes they were. But i think They didnt realize themselves it enough that it was super wrong. Different mindset i guess back then. I loved both movies, but moses(movies about slavery and freedom) and Joseph (movie about finding yourself and betrayal) are very different and personally i prefer Joseph because of the story. just my view on a couple things. Love, Jiska

I’m more familiar with the musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. I was in the choir as a young child, and didn’t even know there was a movie. I wonder why (if the musical came out first), they didn’t at least try to get the licensed music to it? It’s a lesser known story and they didn’t have much of a budget, I know, but if it were possible, I feel the film would definitely have benefitted. I mean, the opening number alone is worth the licensing rights. It’s an EARWORM if I’ve ever heard one.

i actually used to prefer Joseph king of Dreams rather than Prince of Egypt, mainly cause as a kid prince of egypt is more of a violent or dark movie compared to Joseph king of dreams. I actually like all of the music in JKD, its calm and just nice. Prince of Egypt to me is more of a mature film, like not for kids. But both is really a good film and a masterpiece itself in it's own ways, comparing just doesnt makes sense, cause their vibe is so different
@DallSmick Жыл бұрын
I respect that. I think I was a little harsh to this movie looking back, and I can respect the amount of effort and heart that was put going into it. Though I do understand what you mean. I first watched Prince of Egypt when I was about 13 and coming off of some hard times, so I think I was at a point where I was able to handle some of the darker themes a little better than a child seeing it for the first time, so you're right there. Joseph King of Dreams does have some darker elements (even implied lust from that queen lady) but its not nearly as concentrated or heavily present, which I respect.
@thecatladytm71724 жыл бұрын
I just watched Prince of Egypt and King of Dreams back to back, and yeah, there are very jarring tonal differences with the slavery aspect, but both movies were *HEAVY.* They carried weight into their subject matter, and, referring to Joseph specifically, you can feel, hear and *see* the anguish when he is sold and anger when his brothers arrive. Definitely not as much as Moses did, but still a good enough amount to give a few heavy sighs just to relieve the pressure in your chest after observing what just happened. And yeah, I guess I really only remembered King of Dreams because of "You know better than I" (it was my favorite song for a while), but its a pretty good movie in its own right, by no means an equal to Prince of Egypt, but still able to make you feel things. If I can feel what a character feels, I tend to grow more invested and am happier with the movie in general. You did a great job on this video, and if you read all of my ramblings, feel free to express your own opinion. 😊❤

Honestly i think where PoE is better is the music and grandeur art, but other than that JKoD is better since its story is more grounded and applicable eith its themes. Like it deals with family, betrayal forgiveness, acceptance, and several other themes that don't get overshadowed by god doing a bunch if plagues and miracles. Contrast that with PoE where yes you do have a heavy and dark theme with slavery and an uplifting theme with moses learning to believe in his own intrinsic worth, but so much of this is thrown out when the sky daddy decides he's just gonna fuck shit up, because NOW he wants to free them from slavery even though that could have been done a while ago. And don't get me wrong, Moses and Ramses are still good characters going into the end of the film, but them being good characters dont really matter when the plot is in sky daddy's hands. The visuals CARRY the end of the movie by creating illustrating tension. But start to finish there was a consistent stream of tension in JKoD because god had hardly anything to do with progression of the plot. Outside of giving Joseph dreams at key points in the story, anything else that moved the plot had to do with what PEOPLE were doing, therefore creating a morr relatable narrative

I don't think it's fair to compare this to Prince of Egypt. The prince of Egypt is a biblical epic. Everything was appropriate for that type of film. Joseph is a completely different story. If they made say the animation on the same level as prince of Egypt, it wouldn't work.

This was a good review. I agree that Joseph King of Dreams wasn't as good as the Prince of Egypt, but for kids, this movie is not confusing and the songs are decent.

@DallSmick3 жыл бұрын
I think I worded it poorly, I mean't that the whole slavery aspect in general was downplayed. Not really because of the themes in the story, I get that the story of Moses was worse in that aspect, but slavery in general is a pretty messed up concept in general. I think that's what I was trying to exaggerate; slavery in general was still really bad and cruel, yet it seemed less like anyone recognized that in Joseph.

Though I realised after just watching it in english for the first time that I actually prefer the dub with my language well as for the general acting but with the songs I don't know why they didn't just do another take because in 2 of Joseph's songs the voice actor was so off-key it hurts.

“For a straight to VHS film, its a lot better than the competition. It has the heart and the emotion to put it above even the worst straight-to-video Disney sequels.” (then plays a clip from The Lion King 2) Me: Whoa!!! While I can agree some of the straight-to-video Disney sequels are trash, The Lion King 2: Simba’s Pride is the biggest exception. Hell, it literally has the biggest cult following out of all the straight-to-video Disney sequels, LITERALLY HAS THE BIGGEST CULT FOLLOWING!! Slavery was fewer in times of Joseph. Him bringing the Hebrews into Egypt caused a massive issue with population control that the ruling class, after generations, became slavers of many. I think like from Joseph to Moses, 50 - 100 years had already passed.

I prefer the reprisal with Jodie Benson and David Campbell, since they harmonize really well together. I think part of why I was hard on these songs was because I was directly comparing them to The Prince of Egypt which was unfair of me.

I laught out HARD when 3:40 was sung. Its so dumb and paints Joseph as so self centered The most annoying part of the movie for me was how Joseph never had a character arc. He never did anything terribly wrong or went through any hardships (he is framed for little reason, if he had been the one to flirt with the pharaoh wife that would have been more interesting). He was praised for the dumbest things and given the title of vice-pharaoh for reading a dream? He was a Mary-Sue the whole way through and I was waiting for him to get his face punched or doing something evil. Also I love how well treated and happy the slaves are:)) good thing, or else Joseph would look bad as a slave owner Finally, I hated the song "you know better than I" as its just "I will just assume there is a reason for this, I know nothing, I am dumb human "
@TheBlueArmageddon3 жыл бұрын
Also, just thought of something... Benjamin as a character bothers me. 1. Youre telling me his father made the same mistake with upbringing as Joseph? 2. The only reason we can believe Joseph to be a miracle child, is because his mother struggled to bear a child... welp guess it wasnt that much of a miracle after all 3. Youre telling me his dad is 50+ years old and still alive? We can use Ben to figure out that atleast 15 years must have passed since Joseph came to Egypt...which... raises 10 more questions, but im gonna limit myself. 4. We have no relation to him and hes just there as a plot device.
@brandoncruise63983 жыл бұрын
“He never went through hardships”. Are you kidding me?? Did you miss the part where he was betrayed by his own family? He was allowed to drink water only from the leftover sloppy mess of a camel after being deemed not worthy of drinking fresh water. Did you also miss the part where he spent two years in prison for a crime he did not commit? At this point he didn’t have any friends except for the one whose wife accused him of something he didn’t do, causing the two guys’ friendship to break. That is a whole lot of pain, loss, and loneliness.
