A charming, refreshing concerto showing that english orchestras do not think such music are too low for their "grandeur" like do french orchestras who would not even think to put such works to their repertoire! It reminds of what Arthur Rubinstein said once as far as concert program should be: an entrée, then the main course, and to finish a dessert with some nice alcohols to cheer you up!This is the nice dessert!Thanks for it!

Noch, zu meiner Jugendzeit, stand in fast jedem bürgerlichen Haushalt ein Klavier und jeder lernte Klavierspielen. Diese Zeit ist leider vorbei. Wir können sie leider nicht zurückdrehen, sie muß sich selbst vernichten um später wieder neu auferstehen zu können. Hart geschrieben, aber das ist der ewige Wandel, auch in der Gesellschaft. @@jfthiesen2947 Ich kome da nicht ganz mit. Leider kenne ich keinen Zuckerberg, weiß daher nicht was er plant. Der Geschäftssinn strebte immr nach billiger Entlohnung fleißiger Arbeitermassen, wenn man diese nicht durch intelligente Maschinen ersetzen kann. Das hat, wie Jedes auf der Welt, zwei Seiten. Eine Negative, ausnützen für schlechte Bezahlung, aber auch eine Positve, Arbeitsbeschaffung für die, ansonsten arbeitslose, Masse. Diese Arbeitslosigkeit Vieler der Masse ergiebt sich durch die Minderbildung Vieler, aber auch durch Ausnützen des Sozialstaates. Solange man Arbeit als Übel und Plage ansieht, kann sie nicht befriedigen und wird als Last empfunden. Tagore :"Ich schlief und träumte die Arbeit wäre Pflicht, ich erwachte und sah die Pflicht wurde Freude!"

I've once got into a discussion with academic music scholars who condemned Eybler (and even more my respect for him), but to my ear he was a genius comparable with Mozart (he admitted that himself in a testimonial; they were very close friends - Eybler nursed Mozart till his very end) and Haydn (he helped Eybler when his family lost almost everything in a fire). Maria Theresa was extremely fond of his compositions and secretly (with even Eybler being unaware of the fact) tried to replace Salieri with Eybler as the Kapellmeister, but she wasn't able to do so before Salieri retired. There must have been something exceptional about him. I have no idea why he remains so unknown to the world. I cannot even find recording nor scores of his masses to acknowledge myself with his music. There's his Requiem in C minor on KZbin and it's very impressive.

He's virtually unknown today, but clearly an accomplished composer. Without having seen the score, one generally can't know whether the cadenzas were written by the composer or someone else, perhaps the performer. At that time, many composers simply put in a chord in the orchestra with a notation for a cadenza, which the performer was expected to improvise on the spot.

Este debe de ser el mejor de los conciertos para clarinete jamás compuestos, y por sí solo ya explica que Eybler hubiera sido el único de los discípulos de Mozart a quien éste consideraba un genio, y también el primero a quien él designó para que terminara el Requiem. First time of hearing! What a lovely sunny work (1st movement so far). Definitely overshadowed by Mozart, unfortunately. Deserves wider exposure. Interesting 3/4 6/8 mix in second movement. Not quite as convincing as Mozart slow movements, but pretty nevertheless. Lovely sensitive playing! III - Stadler would have revelled in this movement. Quite a challenge on the clarinet of the period I imagine. Unusual and unique intro to the coda - meno mosso/accelerando. Worth a second listen.

Mozart praised Him! Eybler took care of his master during the final illness. He refused to complete the Requiem as asked by Constanze, Mozart's widow:that was fullfilled by Sussmayr: but I believe that eybler was more and nmore gifted than Sussmayr.

Wonderful to listen to & probably play (I haven't yet) by an Austrian/Viennese composer born only a few years after Mozart & passed very much later after Mozart (February 8, 1765 - July 24, 1846). This concerto very much reminds me of Czech Bohemian Frantisek Kramar-Krommer's concerto for clarinet having the style of sustained melodies and large jumps; not a sign of Mozart, sounding definitely as written well past 1800 as an early romantic / late classical piece. Also some of the low notes in the large jumps might have been originally below the written low E if indeed written for Stadler's B-Flat BASSET clarinet. LOVE the dramatic beginning of the slow mov'nt, probably here some resemblance of Mozart in the pulsing orchestra behind the long sustained notes - but also Krommer comes through (I am a big fan of Kramar-Krommer & his wind music). Serious music contrasting with the preceding and following happy-jumpy mov'nts. Great recording of great performance by D. Klocker with the Brits. Yes, I am grateful do Klocker for his recordings of clarinet music NOT by the famous. Vielen Dank!!!

The actual battle was officially between English and Dutch fleets: some French warships may also have been involved on the Dutch side. Bonjour, il n'y a pas que les ignares et les intolérants qui empêchent la résurrection de certains compositeurs, il y a surtout les compositeurs eux-mêmes qui font piètre figure face à leurs homologues bourrés de talent et de génie. Pour Eybler la comparaison n'est pas si défavorable avec le grand Wolfgang, mais dès lors que vous jetez une oreille sur les oeuvres de De Vienne ou Reicha vous comprenez spontanément que c'est leur manque d'inspiration qui les désavantagent. De là à les laisser au fond d'un tiroir il n'y a qu'un pas.

@@MegaCirse Je pense que ni vous ni moi n'avons eu le temps d'écouter l'intégrale des oeuvres des compositeurs qui "en valent la peine". Le répertoire est bien trop vaste. Vous avez raison de promouvoir les compositeurs de "seconde catégorie" mais c'est un peu une perte de temps et pour ceux qui auraient l'oreille trop peu affûtée cet exercice n'aurait pour résultat qu'une confusion entre le génie et l'artisanat et finalement personne n'aurait rien à y gagner. Amitiés à vous néanmoins.

The concerto is composed in the late classical style, I don't find specific Mozart-related inspiration in the concerto. It feels a bit proto-romantic too.

Padre Patta Actually, there is a reason this concerto in particular sounds like Mozart's concerto in particular. Eybler made a small contribution to the completion of Mozart's Requiem done mostly by Süssmayr. And like Mozart's Clarinet Concerto and Quintet, this Concerto was written to the abilities of Anton Stadler. Most likely it was likewise written for the same type of clarinet as Mozart's Quintet and Concerto, one of extended range known as the basset clarinet. Like those works, this work would have to undergo substantial edits to become playable on a standard clarinet. The decisions made in such a process is probably one reason they sound alike.

sure! He was one of the four composers who tried to finish Mozarts Requiem: Freystädler, Eybler, Stadler, Süßmayr. Eybler was a friend of Mozart, who appreciated hin much. Mozarts widow Konstanze gave Eybler the partitur of the Reqiuem on the evening of Dec. 21, 1791. He completed the sequence from Dies irae to Confutatis, but failed at the Lacrymosa (only two bars ).
