He trained in the U.S. since age 13 and later in college with the U of Texas Longhorns. Phelps had already broken the world record of 50.22 in 2009 but that doesn't diminish Schooling's Olympic record (until Dressel this year). What's pretty amazing is how the times have gone down since Rio - Schooling clocked a time of 49.84 and was sixth in his heat at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. His time placed him 39th overall out of 70 so failed to qualify for the semi-finals.

It was an historic first gold medal for the republic of Singapore and it came from the unheralded Joseph Schooling winning the gold in the 100 metres butterfly event and beating even his idol America's Michael Phelps. At the same a tiny island like Singapore with no natural resources and a hinterland,her first historic Olympic gold medal at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics brought shame to her neighbour up north Malaysia who have still to win an Olympic gold.Still yet to produce an Olympic champion.But for Singapore it was sheer delight and at last they have an Olympic champion in Joseph Schooling whereas Malaysia have to be satisfied with four silvers at the same games.
@yiseng46023 жыл бұрын
@Richy Ok we have so many chances to end our gold drought in several editions of the Olympic Games when it comes to badminton. In the 1996 Olympics at Atlanta Cheah Soon Kit's and Yap Kim Hock's quest for an Olympic gold were denied by Indonesia's Ricky Subagja and Rexy Manaiky.They lost out a three set thriller to their nemesises. Then it was Lee Chong Wei's turn to be denied the gold by his archrival China's Lin Dan who twice beat him in the final.The first was at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.Lin Dan won comfortably in straight sets.Four years later at the 2012 London Olympics Chong Wei came very closed to win Malaysia's historic first gold medal but Lin Dan pipped him 21-19 in the deciding set. Having got rid of Lin Dan in the semifinals at the last Olympics in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 we all thought that Chong Wei could end our Olympic gold drought but surprisingly he choked in the final to yet another Chinese Chen Long and bowed out in straight sets. That year at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics we had three bites at the cherry for the gold in badminton but had to be satisfied with three silver medals.Our mixed doubles pair Goh Lui Ying and Chan Peng Soon were outclassed in straight sets by their Indonesian opponents for the gold and then Goh Wee Shem and Tan Wee Kiong were holding three match points in the final against their Chinese opponents but were pipped in the deciding set.And Chong Wei again for the third time had to be satisfied with the silver medal. So we should not be proud to be just winning silvers.Just look at Indonesia.They have won many gold medals in badminton and so does Thailand in women's weightlifting.Vietnam too won a gold at the Rio Olympics through their shooter.

Huge appreciation for this Asian Caucasian dude. Beating Phelp is hugely a great achievement indeed. Unfortunately, he couldn't retain his crown.
