Joseph Smith reported receiving divine revelations in the early 1800s, and eventually became the founder of the Mormon religion and his prophecies now influence the lives of millions. Jimmy and Dom consider the evidence concerning Smith's claims to be a prophet. sqpn.com/2019/...

My former wife joined the Mormon Church and I tried to embrace it later, but never really could and eventually left that church. Something just didn't feel right. Of course the Mormons told me I was condemned to Hell for leaving the church. Have since Come Home to Rome and enjoying some real Truth. Currently enrolled in RCIA.

@@johns1834 The trinity was an invented pagan concept to get away from accusations of polytheism. So they invented the three headed one body concept of God probably patterned after the three headed dog Cerberus which pagan converts could understand. Still, the theophany of Joseph Smith who saw Jesus next to Father blows the trinity out of the water. With God the Father pointing to Jesus on the right 'This is my beloved Son, hear him". End of millennia debate. Settled. But after all that no where did Jesus insist on the trinity as a gauge for being Christian. Never. Jesus always pointed to the Father through himself. His perfect will was always about his Father who created our souls. He wants us to return to him. And in the words of Pope Francis one's conscience not denomination is important. If your LDS come to Christ that way so be it. We are statistically, much more faithful, attend church, read scripture more often, say prayers more often, have more in tact families than Catholics. So until Catholics take their faith more seriously, you can offer little. LDS take weekly sacrament, still dress in Sunday best, do not shop or dine out on the Sabbath. Again, how do Catholics dress for church? Keep the sabbath? Yet you pity us? Perhaps you should be more concerned about yourself and your church.

@@suem6004 Wow. You are truly misinformed about the Catholic Church. The Trinity (not the word Trinity) is right from the Bible. You realize the Bible you use today is from the Catholic Church. The Mormon idea of becoming a God is totally against the first of the 10 commandments. Satan was kicked out of heaven because he sought the same thing. @@suem6004, typical Mormon troll, every time somebody questions your false religion you attack with lies. There several passages in the scriptures that talk about the Trinity, Isaiah 48:16, Matthew 3:16-17 and 28:19. Wonder, this is a response to ,"I was shown that you can’t have Christ without the Cross." If you are making a big deal about physical crosses being worn and on buildings, I respectfully disagree. If you are denying our belief in Jesus being put upon the cross, you are a liar. The Book of Mormon says, "33 And I, Nephi, saw that he was lifted up upon the cross and slain for the sins of the world." That is 11 chapters into it. That was written around 600BC showing we believe the cross was known of by God and His prophets hundreds of years before He came. There's a Mormon temple in my area, so I am frequented by their door-to-door evangelists. I do my best to defend The Church in a charitable manner. The conversation is always pleasant up until a certain point, which varies, but is usually when they talk about "feeling the burning in my bosom" or heart. In this case, I use the arguments you mention about subjective feelings being volatile and untrustworthy. Everytime, no matter the actual point of conversation derailment, their response is "why are you attacking me". No rhyme or reason. Why do their evangelists seem to run or execute through their sales pitch like a robot or computer executing a programmed process? Excellent episode! For me, the complete lack of archaeological evidence for the Book of Mormon is enough to disprove Smith’s prophetic status. When I found out about the Book of Abraham gaffe, it was just an extra nail in the coffin. What distresses me, though, is that I have seen several Mormons on the Internet turn to atheism after losing their faith in their church’s claims. It’s understandable from a psychological point of view for them to be wary of getting burned again, but it saddens me to see them inoculated against the true Church because they had a bad experience with a false one. I should also say that it’s really great to hear someone talking about this from a Catholic perspective. So many of the videos I’ve watched of Christians addressing Mormon claims come from an Evangelical perspective and sometimes they suggest things that Catholics would not be able to agree with.

One note: both Smith and the Muhammad of Islam were recognized as prophets by their relatives. In fact Muhammad initially thought that he was being attacked by a demon, and only the encouragement of his wife and uncle convinced him to be open to more visitations from the "angel Gabriel." Having a "prophet" in the family is prestigious, and dangerous to the soul: Judges 17 tells the story of a man who made an idol and convinced a Levite to serve it in his house, and thought God would be pleased with him for having one of His priests in his service. Meanwhile Jesus was rejected by most of his relatives (though not all, since the New Testament frequently mentions His mother and the "brothers of the Lord"), his hometown, and most of the Jews. This rejection is mentioned again and again in the Gospels, probably to emphasize that He really was a prophet and not a hyped-up avatar of familial or racial vainglory.

Galatians 8-9 "But if we, or an angel on Heaven, preach another Gospel to you other than this one LET him BE ACCURSED " Strong words from Paul, a man who did not mince words. @@madamvaudelune3298 Awww still misusing Galatians to justify your lack of prophets and apostles. Such a shame you turned your back on God for worship of an institution. But luckily Jesus is alive and well in case you have not read that far in the bible. He still is active in his work for neither his work nor works have an end. He very much wishes to lead his church but of course these institutions became pharisaical and told Jesus to get out and never return. The Grand Inquisitor is about what the Church would do to Jesus if he dared showed his face again. Burned at the stake. Only Joseph meekly asked the Lord to guide his decision and for his humility was treated to a theophany of Jesus next to the Father. Finally, a mortal who would listen not lecture Jesus. Your outright confusion and loss of spiritual leadership is why More light and knowledge was required. Just as Jesus corrected those false teachings and traditions the pharisees defended, so he had to return and correct centuries of utter superstition and clericalism. Jesus, not we, are in charge. And we rejoice to hold onto all Jesus’ words past, present and future. That is genuine Christianity. The falling away had occurred as the bible warned but now he restored the fullness and gave us living apostles and prophets. More Jesus is better than less Jesus.

Roughing It, Chapter 16 "ALL men have heard of the Mormon Bible, but few except the "elect" have seen it, or, at least, taken the trouble to read it. I brought away a copy from Salt Lake. The book is a curiosity to me, it is such a pretentious affair, and yet so "slow," so sleepy; such an insipid mess of inspiration. It is chloroform in print. If Joseph Smith composed this book, the act was a miracle--keeping awake while he did it was, at any rate. If he, according to tradition, merely translated it from certain ancient and mysteriously-engraved plates of copper, which he declares he found under a stone, in an out-of-the-way locality, the work of translating was equally a miracle, for the same reason." -- Mark Twain

In such case, they could contain quotations of the New Testament, in which case Joseph Smith could have used the KJV--as a translation familiar to his readers--to represent them. It's also possible that reading in the KJV could have colored Joseph Smith's translation of books written before the time of Christ. Thus, I don't consider the KJV-based argument to be decisive.

Best have multiple reasons for your choice of faith, some including objective facts, evidence, logic, etc. as well as the subjective pulling of your heart.

Martin Harris went to Anton for proof to feel better about backing JS. Whatever Anton said in that meeting made Harris feel very comfortable with backing Smith's efforts financially. And Harris INDEED did back Smith. So, Anton's explanation seems a bit weak to me. If Anton had told Harris it was bunk, do you think Harris would have financially backed Smith? You have left out a bit from the missing 116 pages. Harris bugged Smith several times to take the transcripts to show his wife. Harris was given strict instructions and he violated those rules. He was supposed to show the transcripts to particular people (his wife), but he had other people over. The pages went missing from Harris' home. He went distraught to Smith's house in a terrible state. He told Smith he had torn his house apart looking for the pages. Smith was admonished severely by the Lord as he was told 2 times NOT to allow Harris to take the pages. It wasn't until the 3rd time that the Lord gave permission. Smith lost his power to translate for a time and describes feeling like he had lost his soul. He finally received the revelation regarding the pages. I don't know how the 116 pages serve to prove or disprove the Book of Mormon. I can't think of a reason to go through the exercise of telling the 116 story for Smith if it wasn't true. Your point about being able to point out any edits to the document are valid and would require some deeper investigation. But, 2 points. 1. this was not a word for word translation in the way we translate documents. Smith did not know the language he was reading. He did develop that over time, but not for most of the translation. 2. We are told it was done by "the power of God." And Smith was translating based on his capabilities of language. it is very likely that some of his translations of the 116 texts would have been worded differently. I speak Spanish and Portuguese. When I translate, I often will think of a few different ways to translate a phrase. You don't think detractors would not have pounced on this? And, as I mentioned, I see no benefit from going through this exercise and falsifying a revelation about it. A revelation that isn't particularly extraordinary in its content (.i.e. baptism for the dead, temple worship, structure of the church). And a revelation that, quite frankly, makes Smith look bad. Why do you look to other sources for the witnesses, when the witnesses made thought-out unanimous declarations to what they saw? William Smith was described as being "unstable." And to clarify, the 3 witnesses state, "[a]nd we also testify that we have seen the engravings which are upon the plates; and they have been shown unto us by the power of God, and not of man." By the power of God not of man. They never said they saw with their physical eyes. It was a very spiritual experience for the 3. Moreso than for the 8. Nevertheless, all of their declarations are very explicit. No sense of trickery going on there. Reformed Egyptian--you do not appear to keep up with findings in the Middle East or in North America. There are records of Egyptians being used in the Holy Land in the time of Lehi. There have been scripts that seemingly correspond to demotic script (I believe it was demotic, I might be wrong about the text). I'd look that up if I were you. Archeology--First of all, as Paul taught several times, we do not know God through empirical evidence but by faith and confirmation from the Holy Spirit (1 Cor 2). With that said, look up the findings of Nahom and Ismael in the Arabian peninsula. How about the area believed to be Bountiful in the Arabian peninsula? And how can you say there is NO evidence of Book of Mormon peoples in the Americas? You should take a look at what has been found. Also, keep in mind that there is much that has not been explored. Lidar has just now discovered vast civilizations. There have been new DNA discoveries of a new haplogroup information. You do not bring up the reactions of the first peoples' reaction to Europeans. Waiting for white beaded God from the East who said he'd return. Take a look at The Great White God of Ancient America -- BOM Lands Conference 2014 -- Scott Hoyt about Peru. Consider Wayne May's research. MesoAmerican researchch. And all the debunked criticisms. Hebraisms in the Book of Mormon. Look the channel Latter-day Saints’ Q&A Evidences of the Book of Mormon. Don't turn a blind eye to this. And finally, READ the book and ask God. God won't lead you astray. Witnesses: either you do not know the whole account or you are being disingenuous. Seek the quotes from the 3 witnesses. They did NOT claim their experience was mere vision. They saw an angel, they saw the plates. They all said it was a real experience. Martin Harris stated, "Gentlemen, do you see that hand? Are you sure you see it? Are your eyes playing a trick or something? No. Well, as sure as you see my hand so sure did I see the angel and the plates." He also said "Young man, do you see that sun shining through that window? Just so sure as that sun shines and gives us light by day, and the moon and stars give us light by night, just so sure I know the Book of Mormon is true. For I saw the angel, I heard the voice, I saw and handled the plates upon which the Book of Mormon was written; and by the power and influence of the Holy Ghost, the translation was made by the Prophet Joseph Smith, whom I know by the power and gift of the Holy Ghost, was a true Prophet of God." To their dying days, none of the witnesses denied what they saw, even though many left the church. William Whitmer was not a stable man. You better do some research on that before you claim him as a stable source.

It was mentioned that there is no real evidence for the book of Mormon, which is archaeological, but that is not true. It was also mentioned that there is no internal evidence for the shorthand Egyptian, which is mentioned in the book of Mormon but that is not true either although I do appreciate the effort that these people have gone to try to be fair to the book of Mormon and Joseph Smith in many ways, which is the only fair assessment that I have heard or read from opponents of them but they don’t know about these evidences due to lack of research, or More, perhaps, willful ignorance, but most likely the former, because it seems that they have done a fair amount of research getting back to the archaeological, and I might add geographical evidence for the book of Mormon is the valley of or wadi. AL TAYIB AL ASIM in Northeast Saudi Arabia. According to the book of mormon the Hebrew family of Lehi Camp in this valley for a number of days it had a freshwater river running through it. The place was located about three days journey by Camel south of the gulf of Aqaba, according to Lehi. However, according to the Encyclopaedia Britannica and other publications, there is no or no freshwater river running through this area but because of geological exploration made in the 1990s it was discovered that there was such a valley and such a river at this place, hidden from view by 2000 foot high sandstone cliffs, and that river flows into the red sea as the book of Mormon describes only people who had actually been there could have known of its whereabouts, and it was LEHI’S family that recorded in their records, the existence of this place secondly, the place called NAHO M in Northeast Yemen was not known about in America at the time of the ation of the book of Mormon and it’s publication, but was later discovered about 100 years later, and it is exactly in the right location according to the book of Mormon to be the point at which the caravan changes its direction of travel and goes due east, instead of south to a place in the Republic of Oman, which is a remarkable rainforest in otherwise dry and barren desert. This place was not known about either until it was discovered by geological exploration back in the 1990s this place was called bountiful by the Hebrew family of LEHI The book of Mormon record states that that is why the people named it bountiful, because it was a paradise compared to the barren country that they had travel through for several years. this place also was not known about in the 1830s in America. Yeah Joseph Smith wrote all about it in his translation of the ancient record of the family of LEHI mentioned in the book of Mormon is known to exist at that place and what today is called SALALA. OMAN. The book of Mormon, specifically names, wild fruit, wild honey, iron ORE large trees, mountains, wild game a virtual paradise for this wandering family that had been in exile in the desert from Jerusalem. This family stayed there for a length of time probably two or three years while they built a large ship, and stocked it with meat and fruit for their long voyage, to the promised land that the Lord said he was guiding them to these natural resources still exist at this place, but no one knew about it for over 100 years after the book of Mormon was already published. Now it is known that such a place exists there, because of the WINDS coming off the coast of Somalia, carry a large amount moisture from the sea, and because of the high mountains on the southern coast of Arabia at that place the moisture has held from going any further and large rain clouds buildup, unless there is a virtual rainforest in the middle of the desert just as the book of Mormon described the book of Mormon also stated that bountiful was located straight east of NAHOM many hundreds of miles away, just as the book of Mormon states how did Joseph Smith know where these places were and what they were like even to the very coordinates of the compass Joseph Smith stated that the book of Mormon was very correct in its information. The ancient prophets, who had written the record contained in the book of Mormon, state that what they had written was true and accurate to the best of their ability, and they were the ones that had passed through Arabian desert on this long and treacherous journey to the promised land, which we now know was America. All this history took place nearly 600 years before Christ Now it is known by scientific exploration, where these places are, that are mentioned in the book of Mormon, and they are geographically accurate. But as stated before these places were not known about in America in 1830 when Joseph Smith was translating the plates. Also, gold plates were not known about an 1830 it was not known that Hebrews kept records on plates of gold much later the first scientific discovery of gold plates with hieroglyphic writing wasn’t made until in the 1880s, and since then many sets of gold plates with ancient recordson them have been found in different parts of the Middle East and other places the question may be fairly asked how did a 17-year-old farm boy in 1820s KNOW, that the ancient Semitic people kept records on plates of gold. It had not been discovered at that time yet Joseph Smith described perfectly how they did it the size of the plates how they protected them in stone boxes, which is since been discovered also, he was not making that story up, because it has been proven by scientific research that that method of recordkeeping did exist at that time in the history of the world there are many more evidences of the antiquity, the accuracy, the authenticity and truthfulness of the book of Mormon, within the book itself just to mention one is chiasmus there are many large, complicated, masterfully written examples of chiasmus. Throughout the book of Mormon. This method was not understood at the time of Joseph Smith, how did he write such beautifully composed pieces of Semitic literature, in the book of Mormon, by himself, with no education in that style of Semitic writing. ? To say that Joseph Smith was a fraud, and that there is no solid evidence for the truthfulness of the book of Mormon, is too completely ignore the compelling evidence Of geographic archaeological and linguistic scientific investigation

Mr. Akin, I did listen to this episode of your podcast with some degree of curiousity about your methodology and approach to the topoi involved as well as about the person of Teenager Joseph Smith who claims to have seen God the Father Himself. That epistemological and ontological claim that Smith made is the basis of EVERYTHING else in his contrived religion, it seems to me. My preferred strategy of confuting the youths relevance to Christianity would be to contrast his fantastic claim to a supernatural apparition of the Godhead to the claims made in the NT Gospels of Canonical Scripture, the Bible, by Christ Jesus about God the Father. Isnt there a relationship of exclusivity which is suggested in the Gospels by Jesus such that the claim by Joseph Smith an 18 yrs old boy, seems to be outrageously overinterpreted and exagerrated? The type of Fish Tale told by the immature and ignorant? Looked at another way, what connection to anything historically Christian is Joseph Smith? The interesting question is How Did A particular religious sect with a undeniable similarity to Freemasonry become so wealthy and spread worldwide?

Luckily 14 (not 18) year old Joseph never took you seriously which is why GOD chose him. See, GOD can do his own work. Does not need a council, or a magisterium or even dumb commenters' approval to do what needs to get done. See, Jesus did Resurrect... maybe news to you. That means, HE LIVES. As Joseph Smith later wrote: And this is the final testimony that we give of HIM. That He LIVES. That should be Christianity... I know it is LDS core doctrine. Something Catholics have abandoned long ago. Catholics do not believe in the literal resurrection, do not believe in theophanies, do not believe in the 'real presence of Jesus in the eucharist', do not believe in any of authentic Christian core doctrine anymore. Rather prefer being an NGO rather than a church. So, that is how we LDS clearly can put you out of your misery. For we actually LIVE the gospel of Jesus Christ.

There is a Joseph Smith translation. Unfortunately it is so false that not even Latter day Saints use it. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God,” (John 1:1). So, how did Joseph Smith handle such a clear and precise verse? He rendered it as: “In the beginning was the gospel preached through the Son. And the gospel was the Word. And the Word was with the Son, and the Son was with God, and the Son was of God,” (John 1:1, Joseph Smith Translation). Even the later teachings of Joseph Smith contradicted the Book of Mormon. We know now that he was suffering from serious mental health issues all of his life. Such a sad story.

@@jlewis8145 haha Since it was GOD who inspired logic and reason to the text which wonky translators removed and inserted Greek pagan philosophy. Let's see the other verses after what you wrote...give people the context and not merely a hatchet job you provided. John 1:2 "The same was in the beginning with God." Hm.... that is the same. John 1:3 "All things were made by him; and without him was not anything made which was made." Hm... again the same John 1:4 "In him was the gospel, and the gospel was the life, and the life was the light of men;" So, Gospel was inserted for Word.... for the 'word' was indeed the gospel. John 1:5 And the light shine the in the world, and world perceived it not." John 1:6 "There was a man sent from God, whose name was John." John 1:7 "The same came into the world for a witness, to bear witness to the light, to bear record of the gospel through the Son, unto all, that through him all men might believe." John 1:8 "He was not that light, but came to bear witness of that light." Still hanging in there? John 1:9 "Which was the true light, which light etc every man who cometh into the world;" John 1:10 "Even the Son of God. He who was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not." Hm... Seems like Jesus Christ IS indeed whom Joseph Smith was referring to. Still discussing the bigger plan "the gospel" that God the Father had with his Son, Jesus Christ. There is a major story arc you fail to grasp... That things were not mere happenstance from the creation, through the OT and the Abrahamic covenant...through the teaching, death and resurrection of Christ.... and now? What, did all that stop? Haha You think God is dead? That he still is not active in this world? That the story or 'gospel' goes on? Ever read Book of Revelation? Jesus is alive. He is still bringing things full circle... It ain't over til HE says it's over. Not because a magisterium pronounced 1500 years ago that God would never commune with, work his plan, gather all the peoples of the world.... Sorry if you feel Jesus is a dead statue: an idol. But for LDS.... Jesus is alive and well. Still directs his church today but he will only deal with the teachable, the humble, those who will listen. To them who accept more light and truth will receive more. Those who say "A Bible, A Bible... we have no more need of more words of Christ" will be left with the paltry, confusing, incomplete scriptures of 2000 years ago. So, you may mock but in the last day let's see who is mocked.... True followers or 'going thru the motion' lukewarm people.

@@suem6004 With all due respect, Latter day Saints worship a fictional Christ. The following obscene and vile blasphemies should shock and appall you. The first spirit to be born in heaven was Jesus, (Mormon Doctrine, p. 129). Jesus and Satan are spirit brothers and we were all born as siblings in heaven to them both, (Journal of Discourses, vol. 6, p. 8; Gospel Through the Ages, p. 15). Brigham Young even said that Christ practiced polygamy, fathered children and was even crucified for practicing polygamy. We know that blasphemers do not get into heaven. The real Jesus Christ claimed to be God in the flesh. Christ was crucified because he claimed to be God. It was called blasphemy and punishable by death. Christ was not crucified because he was walking around claiming to be a created being the brother of Satan. That's not blasphemy and certainly not punishable by death. There is no evidence that the 'brother of Lucifer' ever died on a cross, so you have not atonement and your sins will not be forgiven.

Thanks for putting this together and trying to be fair. I often look for outside opinions and insights on this Church. I will always defend the Prophet, Joseph. Much of what is told about him even from our own church 'scholars' is incorrect. They've done a lot of damage. He did not use a seer stone to translate the Book of Mormon, it was the Urim and Thummin, always. I love scripture and stick to those sources over philosophies. Also in his 'war' prophesy it does say 'wars' plural I think that's significant. Thanks again. God is great.

The arguments about archealogical evidence are woefully out of date. In particular, two sites have been located in the Arabian peninsula that are mentioned in the Book of Mormon. The first is a burial site that was unknown until a few decades ago in which a stone inscription was found that has a name, Nahum, that the book identifies as pertaining to that location. The other site is a lush, verdant location along the coast that the book identifies by the name Bountiful. This area is so at odds with the popular perception of Arabia as an arid, sandy, barren ract that even today, some people claim it doesn't exist. This presentation was very even handed as regards Joseph Smith's history, and I enjoyed that part. However, when the presenters began talking about evidences, they went off tthe track and simply rehashed tired arguments that were refuted long ago. Latter-day Saints believe in the faith as delivered by Jesus Christ, whereas the presenters believe in the faith as delivered by theologians, particularly St. Augustine.
