I remember hearing that Joseph Smith was actually the first US presidential candidate to run as an abolitionist. I'm not sure whether that's 100% true but the fact that he ran as an abolitionist for president at all at the time he did is very telling as to the nature of his views on race and the general foundation of the Restored Church as it relates to race. Definitely useful to know for anybody thinking about or contemplating the role of racism in Church history.

@@woodystube1000 I just remember hearing from other Latter-day Saint commentators that he was the first abolitionist candidate. When I tried to verify it online for myself, I couldn't really come to any conclusive evidence that he was indeed the first one which is why I say "I'm not sure whether that's 100% true." As I said, his abolitionist platform is still remarkable and incredibly significant, however, regardless of whether he was the first US presidential candidate to run as an abolitionist. I don't remember being able to find another presidential candidate before him who ran as an abolitionist, at the very least, but I am open to the idea that he was not the first.

It is amazing that he still arises criticism of so many who claim he wasn’t important. Critics will continue to make his prophesy true, that his name would be had for good and evil in the world. I served a foreign mission and was amazed to see critics and believers of the prophet 7 thousands of miles away.

Not exactly prophetic by quite a stretch, just recognizing basic human nature in regards to figures out of the historical past. Not even really a very astute assessment of human nature. Just average. The measure of a true Prophet is that the prophecies are 💯 accurate & fulfilled unambiguously. So many of Joseph Smith's utterances were so oblique & convoluted, & veiled in contrived, pseudo-prophetic language it will be difficult to know if they are ever fulfilled or not. Many others are unfulfilled - & unlikely to *ever* come to fruition... He fails the test. Don't feel sad. Muhammad fails too! He was also a liar, just like Joseph Smith...& laid with females who were far too young, & neither his wife, nor his to take as a wife. Wonder if that is why he once expressed that he had "more in common with the 'Mahometans', than with most of the Christians of the world.." Maybe...

Not even close to in bad taste. Just stop whining snowflakes. I’m a fan of Trump and hope he wins. But he wouldn’t say, “nobody share anything historical regarding assassinations while I’m still shaken.” It seems many people are more shaken than Trump. He would not be offended. Surprising history can offend you.

@andrewlightfoot13235 ай бұрын
Lol! Not very much. He was in jail for passing around fraudulent bank notes, drafted on the nonexistent "Bank of Zion" as payment of debt for supplies. He most likely had ZERO intention of ever paying back those debts. Way back then, a distant ancestor of mine - a grocer/mercantile owner - "sold" Joseph & his cohorts a bunch of supplies (probably staples & sundries, provisions for Smith's group to make their journey back Westward) and were paid with the phony draft, worth nothing in the end, except proof of Joseph Smith's untrustworthiness & lies. The federal government even then took a dim view, of someone claiming bank status without a charter...thus it was that a local Sheriff took him into custody in the first place. So very like Smith to claim "religious persecution"...

So burning down the Nauvoo Expositor, appointing himself as King of the World, practicing polygamy, pedophilia, polyandry, and fleeing Justice in Kirkland for defrauding depositors had nothing to do with his assassination? I don’t think you should be rewriting history.

Rightly so I say, and not necessarily in connection with Trump himself. I have just seen a lot of articles come out in the last few days trying to put things in historical context by citing every presidential candidate that was ever assassinated and they all omit Joseph Smith. When you add his name to the search you get old articles that grudgingly admit the facts but then give weak reasons why he doesn't count somehow.

If you’ve been watching or listening to their other shows, it’s just on brand to for each to present on similar topics. Church History Matters has been running a series for weeks on how Joseph Smith was assassinated as described above.

I actually saw something on it saying this recently. It was the anniversary of his death. So... it's just weird timing. And on topic. Trump's doing fine. The election outcome probably hasn't changed as far as I can tell. Ears... they can actually regrow those in the lab. But it is traumatic abuse that Trump went through. Not a big fan of him for president. But if he keeps his jokes clean... I wouldn't mind him as a commedian.

I would not have voted for Joseph Smith as president in his day. Any man who suppresses criticism by destruction of personal property and declaring martial law should not have any role within the executive branch.
@woodystube10005 ай бұрын
By the way, you intentionally mislead your viewers in the first five seconds of the video. JS was not “assassinated while running for president”. That brings to mind images of Robert Kennedy. No, JS happened to also be on paper as running as for president as a widely unknown at the time of his arrest and lynching. He was not in any way a serious candidate, and his candidacy had zero to do with his death. A more accurate comparison to JS might be David Koresh, although the Davidians posed very little threat to their community and the rest of the country when compared to early Mormons. Had to share.

I respectfully disagree. He was arguably one of the best false prophets in history. The church grew exponentially in power and influence, and nearly 200 years after his death is worth an estimated $200 billion. I’d say that’s pretty successful. Which false prophet would you say was better?

It's sad that he and his brother were killed. Had he been able to run, he could have been defeated on his lack of merits. As some have put forth, the mob was made up of Young loyalists as BY sought to overthrow JS. So internal struggles within the church played a huge part in JS death. The LDS is such a mess. It's just best to avoid it altogether. You waste your time addressing all their false assertions. Hats off to those who have it within them to do it. I woke up and saw the light and walked away. It's the best thing you can do unless you like being lied to.
