Today let's grab a coffee and look at the wonderful artbook of Joseph Zbukvic - Life with Watercolour
I will go through the entire book with you. =)
DISCLAIMER: I am not able to order the book for anyone, the last thing heard from Joseph and Lisa (his wife) is that they are out. The only way I know how to order the book is through the museum's WeChat, the order page is all in Mandarin and I'm not sure if they can ship internationally.

Again, as much as I want to help you order the book, I have no way to do so. :( I am contacting the museum to see if they can put together an English page for international order (if they can do so) If that can happen, I will let you guys know. For now, hope you enjoy as we flip through this book together =)

It is fascinating to watch Joseph Zbukvic paint. He is fluid in his brush strokes. Truly a great master of watercolour. I lived in Melbourne for 50 years and love his paintings of the city streets. In winter it has a lot misty gray days which he captures beautifully. I appreciate seeing so many of his paintings. Thank you for sharing.

Eric, I too happened into Joseph Zbukvic and was also stunned by the life he could so accurately depict with the loosest, most suggestive, impressionistic brushstrokes. I'm so happy you shared this book with us. I very much appreciate your analysis of the paintings and how he makes them so effective. I watched him paint a rainy street scene on KZbin, and I loved it when he said that you must focus and concentrate with intention on every tone, and color, and brushstroke. That, if you just apply the paint without thinking, you might have a happy accident, but you will not likely reach the desired image in the end. I very much like your own watercoloring, and the way you explain it. Thank you.

I've got Bachelor in Architecture from Melbourne University (Australia), finished in 2018, and unfortunately almost no one can do free-hand drawings nowadays. When i did my free- hand sketches people looked at me like I was an alien :) Everything is in CAD now, so sad. When you do a free-hand, you see it immediately, can change it quickly and get the instant vibe... with CAD you so dependent on the abilities of the software and your knowledge of the software.

Thank you Eric. I was moved by Joseph‘s attention to the foreground which captures a feel in the painting; it draws the observer into the story. Would you say that this particular element of his paintings violates the rule of thirds? I know there are no hard and fast rules when it comes to art. That said, Joseph’s style is another way expressing and I love it too. No doubt when I create my own style, I’ll see more clearly how everything else is just a guide.

Excellent explanation of Joseph's techniques. It's one of your best vedeos. The one thing that I want to know is whether he used masking fluid to retain the small white areas in most of his works. It would be difficult to use large wet washes and keep tiny whites without. What's your thoughts on this?

Take any master...their work cannot be duplicated no matter how many books or videos or workshops you have, That is the beauty of a master in my opinion. Always imitated, NEVER duplicated. Once you start to try to do their style, you will get frustrated and potentially lose your own style in the process. Yes, its nice to see their work, but I think what should be taken away from it ...is that his work and other masters ...will never happen again., and we should all be grateful for that.

14:40 - you cannot see the white in the reflection since the white surface is the top of the boat "aiming" at the sky. You can only see the reflection of the underside of the boat, since that surface is opposing the water surface.

Great video, I really enjoyed it. At the water scene you said you don’t know how he came up with his method. Well it seems like he built upon the work of Sargent and Trevor chamberlain amongst others. He certainly created his own style but the visual language building blocks are clearly built upon the foundation of earlier artists. Such is the way with humans and how we learn from each other. Look at Dan Marshall, frank eber, dusan Djukaric, zangarelli, castagnet, and countless others …they all clearly have adopted visual language from Z. Sometimes I look at a painting and think it’s z’s, only to see it’s Dan’s. It seems to be accepted in the art world that you can adopt and build on another’s style. What do you think?

Honestly, that's something I'm trying to avoid. I started to paint differently and trying out different subject because I don't want to stuck with a specific way and style of painting. I learned from Joseph in my early stage of painting watercolor. But I want to explore something else. So I learned from other teachers and try other different subject and approach. This helped me greatly to learn about my own taste.

I personally have no problem with it. Sometime it’s really hard to paint around very little white shape and still have a nice clean big wash. Some people uses masking fluid, some people use white gauche afterwards. If the end painting looks good, doesn’t really matter for me 🙂
