The extra tension cord within the top section is actually for using the tent without the centre pole holding it up. You can rig it up amoungst close proximity trees allowing more space within without the pole

I started feeding my interest in this with Joe, and sometime his family. I’ve watched a few others over the last few years, but the way Joe builds from whatever is around him is genius. I must admit, though, there aren’t as many “Bam, son” moments as there used to be. If you only have time for one channel, this is the one.

Yep that is why you should always research before getting a breed of dog. It makes me mad when people go and get dogs because they look cute and then the dog ends up not being a proper fit for their lifestyle. I have a German shorthaired pointer, and they are hunting dogs that never run out of energy. I take them mountain biking regularly as well as on long hikes. If you are someone who works a 9-5 and doesn't have time to do these things and you go and get a GSP, then it is unfair to the dog.

The elbows are to allow flexibility in positioning, but also to help retain heat by slowing the air a bit. If the elbows are configured right they should even help center the load directly above the stove. Lots of options and benefits to using them if possible.

Tripper is so full of energy! Enjoyed the video & always nice to be out in the woods vicariously. That said, I dont care for the woodstove at all. The "door" is really weird the way it opens & no glass, so you cant watch the fire. I'll take a swing door with glass window any day. The tent is okay, but what if it rains - you cant close it up with the stove pipe in there can you? Take care

You could put small straight stick in through the breather hole rather than taking the big lid off, but they may stick in the throat of the breather tube. Worth a try though. I don't think that Doug had burned that stove in else it wouldn't have had its polished silvery coulour, that has now blued.

A lot of his life he has not been able to move due to his bone condition. He has missed not to be able to run off energy as a young dog wants to do. Really enjoyed it, but I kept getting bothered about the stove. Joe, would it be easier if you put the part that feeds air into the main chamber at the 12 o' clock position and just take that cap off to feed your wood into it? I wouldn't imagine there'd be a difference in the amount of air that is fed into it, and it seems like that'd be an easier option than taking the large door off all the time. Hope you get to see this comment and it works for you. Keep it up man, I love your stuff.

What he needs to do is actually read a manual on the stove and tent. I don't know why (mostly) guys seem to be proud that they remain ignorant about how things are designed to work. I'm helping people at my workplace all day long because they won't read a picking manual. They either don't know how things work or they use them wrong and miss out on the potential benefits. It really is sad. And some seem to be "proud" of this. I can understand trying to figure something out on your own - I do that all the time. But eventually you should get educated on something and enjoy how it is REALLY supposed to work. I suspect that the small hole is there to also load in wood, as you suggest.

The angle bends in the stovepipes are to let you scootch the stove out of the middle of the tent, closer to the tent wall. I think you prolly made the right call with the way you deployed it, with a steeply angled tent wall. With some more-or-less vertical canvas walls, I'd want the stove closer to the wall to maximize floor space. You did get the insulating section in the right spot, but another section above it would be good to improve draft and keep the sparks and embers off your canvas...... also, surprised there wasn't a spark arrestor cap....... Pro-tip: If you're truckin' in, a sheet or two of 1/4" plywood, cut into 4x4 foot squares, can be dealt around to give you a hard floor. DO NOT put the stove on top of this, leave that section bare ground. This makes a world of difference, particularly if you're camping on top of snow, or, mucky wet mess. Keep up the good work, and pat the dawg for us all......

Im not a hot tent expert, but in other videos and images I have seen it looks like the skinny side (where tripper's bed was) is normally where the stove is placed with the stove opening facing the center of the tent. that maximizes space. I think that is what the bent pipes were for, to be able to have the stove under the skinny side and still have the pipe come out the center of the tent. I am actually getting ready to build my own flat pack stove and buy my first hot tent this winter so this video was at a perfect time for me! I would love to see more hot tent camping.

Joe. In case of rain, always dig a sump around the perimeter of your tent, and then a drainage channel downhill and away from the tent, so the water rolls away from your cover and sleep system. This has been taught for 100 years, and I think you have touched on it too. I learned it from my father in the early 1970s. But great thing to emphasize.

Hey Joe. Been following you for years now, and wonder if you will be doing a knife sharpening video that will get a knife razor sharp?

Joe! My best friend's Dutch Shepherd acted just like Tripper all the way until he passed away at age 13. Always lots of fun, but never a mellow moment.

Could the two elbows be meant for putting the stove to the side of the tent and running the pipe diagonal on the inside? Like: short up, 45° towards center, long piece towards the top, 45° to go straight up again and out. 🤔

Agreed. The extra pipes allow different configurations depending on where the stove sits inside the tent. Gives you loads of options for getting the stove pipe to the center and out through the top.

That's what I thought. Would also give you more room inside the tent having the stove closer to the wall of the tent.

Watch Doug Linker's video to confirm how the angled sections can work.

I believe the elbows would also help stop all the heat escaping
