I was pleased to see you tried a snow trench. Snow shelters are sadly underestimated and so under utilized by most campers bushcrafters. Because most of us today live in above-ground wooden structures, our tendency is to favour a similar shelter, even in winter, especially since we think of snow as cold. But snow is a astonishing insulator, and therefore a cozy snow trench, snow cave, quinzhee or small igloo is typically much warmer and easier to construct (requiring only a shovel) than most other forms of shelter. But the real lesson here is that the because snow is such a good insulator, it makes an unbeatable heat trap. The way to think of a snow shelter is just that way: it's a heat trap. Oh..one tip for you, which you likely know already, but I guess you probably didn't use since you mentioned your water froze overnight: next time take your water bottle or canteen and bury it in the snow in the wall or floor of your snow shelter. The surrounding snow will insulate it (trapping the heat that's already in the bottle) and keep it from freezing up. I sleep in igloos and snow shelters every winter and because I plant my water bottles in the snowy floor of my igloo, my bottles never freeze. Keep up the good work! Cheers, - Martin

This was an excellent course! I learned a lot and Joe and Fraser were great instructors in a fantastic location.
@adventureforlife21478 жыл бұрын
I really enjoyed the course. Joe and Fraser are ordinary guys with extraordinary experience and passion for the outdoors. This was my first chance to build a natural shelter it turned out pretty good if I do say so myself. However, the super shelter was warmer than my lean-to with fire wall. I'll try a smaller lean to next time so it can retain more heat.

Joe. Great video and I love your channel. Your shows are the best because you are genuine and come across as a real person and not some put on over the top character. My 12-year-old girl has an interest in bushcraft now and wants to camp like I used to when I was a teenager. We used to call it tarp and fire camping. She's learning knots and some bush sense, very proud of her. We have lots of opportunity on Vancouver Island to use Bushcraft Skills. Especially if you use the backroads for travel. Starting a fire in the pissing down rain is almost impossible if you're not prepared to do so. One thing Joe, please think about filming while driving. I know the laws about cell phone usage and stuff are mostly bs, but kids have it pounded into their heads now, and like it or not, you are setting an example, right. Don't get me wrong, you're setting a great example. Keep up the good work. Cheers. Neil

Super nice video man love to see all kinds of shelters ! Wish I was a little closer to Ontario ! haha oh well.... Whats cool with the snow trench that I find is that the is no wind at all or any breezes coming in if you make it small and put enough bough to block the warmth from escaping the top. I think it's a great shelter for a sleeping bag and sleeping mat situation, even superior to a normal tent as it doesn't provide any insulation. Imagine if it would of snowed on you during the night. Woulda been even more toasty. Love your videos keep it up !

Very nice video. Being from Michigan, I certainly can relate to the snow shelters.
@torreythornton54075 жыл бұрын
Joe, next time dig your shelter about twice as wide and pile the snow on the sides to build it taller. That will make it easier to get in and out of as well as give you space to store your gear inside where it is warmer. Also we take metal water bottles and fill them with boiling water and then put them in a sock. Place them in your sleeping bag prior to going to bed and your sleeping bag will be warm when you climb in. I personally use 3 of them. 1 at my feet, 1 midway just below my butt, and the last one i keep near my chest and arms. Come morning they are still warm and I was warm all night.

My alarm went off and was watching something else but could not wait to see your video, and it is well worth it! Seeing the 'dome' underneath too escape from the cold did worked very well, super! Are you trying to do that again when you get the chance if snow is deep enough? Also, enjoyed to see a group effort you do now, saw it gave you a blast and you seemed to be so much better and more fun, much more in your element for quiet awhile compared to the last videos you showed? Or I am totally wrong but I think I'm not 😉 I hope you will show more group activities, loved it, when you get the chance of course 👍😃 Don't get me wrong, all your videos I love, waiting for the next time my bell rings and email pops up to see you posted a fresh one! Nice one. I tried to do this. It was pretty warm, all things considered, but I couldn't deal with feeling like I was in a coffin. I'm usually okay with sleeping outside alone, but every sound was getting me super paranoid. It didn't help that there was a toasty ski hut a few hundred metres away. I ended up heading back in after an hour.

perhaps making your snow trench a little snug is what helped to keep you warm. a larger one would have been harder for your body to warm up.
