One tip I’ve picked up from a Hobie veteran is to roll the excess main up tight but don’t tie it around the boom, just around itself. It works really well as there is no pressure at all on the reef points

That's a great tip - thanks.

How does that work with an H16, that has a fixed foot mainsail?
@homershk4 жыл бұрын
Joseph thanks. I commented on another video of yours, having a Minicat. Today I bought a 4 meter rope-ladder and a 15 liter mast-float. The latter is to prevent my cat going turtle. Is nice but not essential to be honest cause previously with my cat going turtle I could bring the mast about 2 meter above the water with little effort. However I failed to get her up completely as my 75kg weight is not sufficient). My 50kg heavy son who often joins me didn't have the power to hold on to the rope so in the end we needed a kayak guy to help us out. I speculate the rope-ladder will help both of us conveniently bringing in our 125kg combined weight to get the Minicat up. No intention to go capsize this weekend (I'm in Hong Kong, the water isn't too cold) but if I do, I'll try to get you a video. Thx again.

Great. Good plan with the mast head float especially. I look forward to seeing some video when you get the opportunity. Cheers

I would chalk that flip up to an untimely, no-fault, gust. If you stop the action at 4:21 and go frame by frame (< and> keys), the windward hull was still touching water seven frames into 4:22. Two frames later, BINGO. You can see a hard splash coming from the leeward bow, and it's all over. One of the interesting things about reefing is that it will do next to nothing about speed. When you reduce the lift you also reduce the drag by a similar factor. With reduced drag you can still get similar speed. The biggest factor in reefing is lowering the center of pressure on the main. Theoretically it should be harder to flip, but you made it look easy. ;-)

Hahaha yes certainly easy enough to flip. Thanks for the info, I hadn't thought of it that way.

I guess you need a non stretch halyard if you dont have a second stopper on the wire like the old Hobie halyard . Quick recovery on righting the boat the good wind helps a lot too
@JoyriderTV4 жыл бұрын
Yes, the rope part would certainly need to be dyneema. Maybe if your halyard is that old it's worth getting a new one with the second lug for reefing.

Looks like you had a fair bit of wind that day! I love all the capsized lasers behind you, like you're escaping from the battlefield. Did you say you were going 20 knots or that was the windspeed? The horse noise was hilarious. Watched it twice :)
@JoyriderTV4 жыл бұрын
Oh yes, I think the wind was probably gusting 25 - top speed was around 20. Cheers

Question: why not tie a lifeline? Would it not ensure you never have the boat drift away from you then, or is there a reason not to use one?

I'll talk about this in Friday's Q+A

Wow. Great recovery. Was that more of a pitch-pole, or just a straight blow down? My 16 thirty years ago had no reef points, but we wanted them.
@JoyriderTV4 жыл бұрын
Yeah that was a sideways - i think caused by not sailing with the sheet tight enough generally - if you're not sheeted in, you don't have enough to give.
@bradleyianfield4 жыл бұрын
That jib looks unbalanced for the Reefed main and too much pressure forward took you over. Reefing certainly made the recovery easier. I’m wondering as a recovery method is it feasible to lower some sail when a capsize happens? If only there was a man that could test this?
@JoyriderTV4 жыл бұрын
Yes, it certainly looked like the jib was in too tight possibly a major factor in the swim. In the tests that I've done, dropping the sail down didn't help that much but that was without properly reefing so there was a flap of sail at the bottom which filled with water. If it's not too windy for the full sail - i'd take a bag incase of solo capsize.

hahahahaha, what a rookie! ... As a capsizing expert, I can say: whatever happens NEVER let go of the main

haha, sounds like 'never let go of the boom' on a windsurfboard. I've been windsurfing for 20 years, sailed the occasional monohaul, but id really love to try a cat soon. Thnx for these videos. they help allot.
