I brought Canadian McDonald’s across the border into the USA to meet my friend who had some American McDonald’s and we did a direct comparison taste test. It was epic.. you won’t believe the differences.
We compared the Big Mac, french fries, American ketchup vs Canadian Ketchup, coke, chicken tenders, BLT, poutine, and more!

This was a crazy journey and took some research to figure it all out! My big question is do any American locations have any of the items that Canada has? Or what does your local McDonald's have that others might not?

i HAVE A THEORY. I think the American food was bigger and had more calories because the states have more competition for fast food. You guys have Shake Shack, Steak and Shake ,Checkers just to name a few, So McDonald's needs to compete with a wider competition base hence higher fat content and bigger items. I think since Canada is the coffee shop capital of the world that they would need menu items to compete in that markets hence bagels, muffins , fancy coffee etc etc

One thing that's always overlooked in the America vs Canada McDonald's videos is the Junior Chicken. In America they use the same type of patty for their McChicken as they do for their Junior Chicken, here in Canada they are 2 different Patty's. Our McChicken is the same as America's but our Junior Chicken is a whole new patty.

As someone who works for a meat company that produces for the US and Canadian markets, the meats tend to be prepared with different ingredients. The lower calories on the Canadian market, I feel as though it has something to do with Canadian food standards for producers to follow.
@normanicusinvictus7416
@normanicusinvictus7416 4 жыл бұрын
It may have a lot to do with quality offset rules. The US is allowed to offset qualities of meat but Canada can't to meet choice standards. The same grade and cut of meat in the US may be higher in fat, have different marbling, muscling, etc. (Though these standards have a high overlap between carcasses). Things like yellow fat throw them right off the A and into the B-grades in Canada. US doesn't. So thats likely where the difference is. McDonalds can use lower "standard" beef in the US and likely tweak ratios for fat from other cuts. If I were to guess, they'd probably start with rounds and then use sirloin and trim to adjust fat and flavour between batches. Anything else is just spices and salt. Additionally, McDonalds US does import beef from the US, New Zealand, Canada and Australia - So this may help create a more consistent quality beef (Constantly mixing sources for your beef tends to create a generic flavour.) sauce - I used to work as a butcher in Canada and the US, and worked the meat center in a grocery store chain in Canada, in a border town. USDA standards were posted.

We also have requirement for beef animals being in different grouping based on if it's animals has growth hormones or not using growth hormones...that may cause the difference in the taste in meet also. It's the same thing with the dairy products. Canadian dairy is more regulated and has less additives and therefore less hormones. It's a bit more pricey compared to American dairy goods, but consider the regulations and of course, like with any other country, the price is geared to the citizens and their own currency/buying power.

As a Canadian, one thing I think America does way better that Canada is customer service. I had to go to 3 U.S. cities (Boston, Dallas & Altlanta) back in 1993... and more than one time, we went to McDonalds for a meal and I was impressed by the staff working in them. I hope that hasn't changed over the past 3 decades. It's not that Canadian fast food workers are rude or whatever. Most times, they're default-pleasant enough. However, sometimes, they're inattentive. Sometimes, they seem bored and uninterested in the job. More than once, they've gotten orders wrong. A couple of times, the workers in a local McDonalds seemed more interested in talking to their friends that serving customers. But in the U.S., I actually had the guy who took my order say "And let me know if I can make your stay here more pleasant." to me when he handed me my tray of food. I was flabbergasted. I've never heard that in any fast food place here in the Greater Toronto Area. I guess I had become accustomed to "default-pleasant".

I used to work at McDonald's for a decade. In the US we have more sugar in our bread, the seasoning is pre measured but that doesn't stop the grill cook from double seasoning (it's only supposed to be seasoned once) the snack options are actually tested and rolled out by franchise owners on sale/public acception. And also Canada is more expensive so they get the expanded menu 💪💯

@Professor Mike AmericanuckRadio Nuh-Uh. Burger King is failing across (Canada anyways) due to shitty business tactics, poor service and with that - customer dissatisfaction. Kind of like KFC up here - used to be good - now it's a gamble....plus, the franchise owners ( In Calgary anyway - I did a personal taste comparison of eight different locations 'cos I was so mad at KFC one day) seem to have augmented the recipes to suite their budgets or what have you - for example...the potato salad and gravy used to be to die for with regards to fast food taste! I'm comparing how it was in the 80's, 90's, early 00's......now, it's just shit. Chicken too - seems like it's missing half of the required ingredient portions - weak....anyhoo, that's just KFC, I digress. Burger King (two locations in Calgary now, there USED to be more) just seemed like it was destined to fail here. Compared to the 80's. Introduce Jack In The Box here and see what happens! Carl's Jr and Popeye's are struggling, but I think due to service more than anything.

....... you do realize that "McDonald's" the company only owns a very small percentage of the chain? Like 18% of them, the rest are franchised out .... like your McDonald's Canada. So while they do not own the establishments, they get paid for the use of their name. Yes ... even your McDonald's Canada. That applies worldwide, and as such ... your McDonald's Canada couldn't have opened the Russian McDonald's without corporate approval. Also, you neglect to mention the part played by the Moscow City Council, as the first there was a joint venture between them and McDonald's Canada.

Mark Curry Yes of course there is a master franchise agreement between American and Canadian McDonalds. I understand all this, since I used to own a different small food franchise. However, McDonalds USA doesn't have much power over McDonalds Canada. As mentioned, they don't own the Canadian corporation. Meaning, if the American corporation were to somehow cut the cord, they would lose hundreds of millions of dollars in the process. There is no simple process for this. Also, Russia, at the time, would not have allowed McDonalds USA to have entered their market. It was more palatable because it was Canadian. Don't get me wrong, the Russians wanted to eat a Big Mac, they just wanted a maple leaf on it. Those are the facts.

@@jennifersaunders1979 Yep! Basically the point is McDonalds in the states are more "franchise" owned than corporate owned. The franchise don't like to invest a whole lot of money into something new for what they feel are minor trends in the market. It's sort of killing them. McDonalds wants to innovate with new things and keep up with the competition, but the franchisees don't see it that way. They see they have a stable "core" base that likes what they already have. They think even if they invested heavily into equipment that would make providing new products easier would just be a waste in the end. So newer and bigger stores in America tend to offer some of those more innovative items, but established ones are not going to happen.

Poutine served in Quebec doesn't get soggy because the fries are much thicker. Thin fries get gravy-logged and the end result is horrible. McDonald's Canada would need to switch to a larger cut for their french fries if they wanted to get serious about their poutine.

I am willing to bet the calorie difference is in the sauce. Like the ketchup that they use high fructose corn syrup in, the Big Mac sauce probably has it as well. Being a concentrated sugar, it would have more calories. Also, the sauce is probably higher in fat then in Canada.
@abmong

HFCS is in all foods (in the USA), it's used in everything including savory foods, not just sweet foods. This is one reason why Americans are so fat, but there's also an obesity problem in the UK, but I don't know if they put HFCS in their foods in the UK like we do in the States.

The biggest reason I don't drink much pop anymore is that it is loaded with high fructose corn syrup. I am trying to consume less of that. It is worse than sugar as far as nutrition goes. More calories, mainly. It supposedly raises your risk of diabetes.

@abmong

@@bobprice9541 as far as I know all fast food chains in the US use HFCS in their burgers. Those same brands however use less or use cane suger instead in Canada and the EU where HFCS use are restricted. Like Coke in the US use HFCS, Coke in the EU use cane sugar. It comes down to government regulations. The US unfortunately is more "for profit" than pro "consumer protections" You can find burgers without HFCS in the US but not at fast food chains. More like the gourmet restaurants and boutique places that are more health conscious or make it yourself.

Great Video! having spent some time in Europe last year, specifically in Latvia I had the opportunity to eat McDonalds over there. Mostly because of work hours and all it was what was available. I was absolutely shocked to see that not only are there items not even on their menu vs the US menus, but the quality of the food is by far WAY better than what we have here in the states. Digging deeper I found out there are actual laws for that country that dictate freshness, chemicals in food, etc that help to answer why it was so much better, but even in your video with Canada, the comparisons are huge. Great video again!

Maybe thinner patties would account for the reduced calories? McDonald's poutine is a last-resort, but will suffice if you can't find a good food-truck that serves poutine.
