Beautiful, very realistic painting. Thank you so much for explaining the colours and the procedure. Wish the video was regular like not time lapse.

This video was very helpful for me. Painting reds are a challenge to keep them rich and bright. Your intro was very helpful to let me know what paint you are using. The. instruction in the time lapse was really helpful. I have subscribed to your channel, thanks for making these!

How did you do the snowy branches in the painting. The cardinal is beautiful and so are the branches. So realistic
@JosephKoensgen
@JosephKoensgen 26 күн бұрын
For the branches I build it up starting with the basic branch shape - very important to get that shape looking right - then doing lighter greys, building up the frost around each branch until I eventually do titanium white for the final highlight layer of frost. My next video is going to be about how I do frosty pine branches. Not exactly the same process as these branches, but the overall concept is very similar. So stay tuned for that one!

This is absolutely stunning 😍 I have always been pretty good at drawing but am somewhat new to painting. I would love to paint this, maybe even with the addition of a female cardinal for my grandparents as a Christmas gift. So just a few questions for you if you don’t mind. -what color were you using for the beak? -do you have any color suggestions for a female cardinal? -do you ever do tutorials for your entire paintings? *I love the background in this painting, it is so beautiful! You are truly talented, and I am in awe every time I watch this!!
@JosephKoensgen
@JosephKoensgen 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much!! I appreciate that! And it's no problem. For the beak I mixed cadmium red, cadmium yellow, some grey and raw umber just to dull it a bit. So you could use cadmium orange to start and go from there! And a colour for the female, I would say something like a grey with some raw umber and some yellow ochre. And you could layer some of the reds over top where some of that colour is showing. I mix all my colours with a few variations of the primary colours, so I'd also recommend lots of experimenting with colour mixing if you're new to painting. In my latest painting video of a fall/winter scene, I go through most of the painting from start to finish, where I talk about the background and some of what I did there. I'm not always able to film my painting process, but in the future I'll be doing more stuff about the entire painting and talking about backgrounds a little more. Since it's such an important part to each one of my paintings. I hope that helps!!

How did you make the frost?It looks so real!
@JosephKoensgen
@JosephKoensgen 4 ай бұрын
I usually build the frost up in 2-3 layers, starting with a grey and fishing with just white. I plan on making a more detailed video about frosty branches in the future. I do share that a little bit about that at the end of my video about painting a fox. kzbin.info/www/bejne/omaunWyir62cmZo

Hello Joseph, it was wonderful. I love the vibrant cardinal. did you allow sometime to a layer to dry before painting another layer on top of bird? and where else i can follow you?
@JosephKoensgen
@JosephKoensgen 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much!! Since the acrylic paint dries so quickly I can go back over it with layers only after a minute or two of drying time. And in some cases I'm painting on top of the layers right away. You can follow me on Facebook and Instagram, I've got links to those in the description! Appreciate it!

Beautiful, Joseph. Finally, someone who uses payne's gray! I enjoyed this, and now am subscriber. I look forward to more. I worked on a cardinal earlier this last week, and I wasn't happy with it. I should have just traced it. Is that what you do? I was just wondering, since I didn't see how you got him up there.
@JosephKoensgen
@JosephKoensgen 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much!! I love payne's gray. It's such a versatile colour. I use it all the time as it has a great purplish tint to it that works great for shadows and making darks more vibrant. Also, I draw out my birds on paper first, then trace them on to the board. I rarely draw straight on the board since I'm usually wanting to make adjustments to the placement. This way I can adjust it here and there if I'm not entirely settled on where I want the bird to be in the painting. Then when I've got it where I like, I can transfer it on and I'm good to go!

This is so beautiful! I love it! I am beginner and just wondering how long does the bird part take you, and how long it would take me:)
@JosephKoensgen
@JosephKoensgen 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much!! This bird took me about 6 - 8 hours. But I do a lot refining and adjusting things to make it look correct. So depending on your skill, it could be around that long. However, I'm not usually thinking about how long something will take me, and I'm more concerned with it looking right in the end. For you as a beginner, I encourage you to just dive in and practice and learn regardless of the time. You will get faster as your skills increase!
