Great video Joseph, thank you. The only thing I'd add is I typically cut and prep a bunch of boards at the same time, it's just too much work for just one board.

Great Greys are my favourite owls. Unfortunately we rarely see them here. But we do have nice population of Ural owls. Watching You hiking, inspecting fields and forests, driving around and looking for owls reminds me my own adventures :) Constantly looking around.. and when finally you find one, it's happy-days :D

Great Greys are incredible, and this sighting was the best one I've ever had! I'm glad it reminds you of your owl searching adventures - I love getting out there and trying to find them. Definitely happy days when it happens! Hopefully one day I can have the chance to see an Ural Owl. In Canada we have the similar looking Barred Owl, but I don't see them very often. Thanks for watching, and hopefully you have some more Great Grey sightings in the future!

This is so beautiful to watch - your brush strokes are so confident. Do you ever find that you finish an area and then later on decide you've got to entirely repaint it with a slightly different hue or tonal value? I am working on a painting where I have repainted the main bird three times to get the shadows just right.
@JosephKoensgen
@JosephKoensgen 24 күн бұрын
Thank you!! Yes, it happens to me fairly often that as I finish different sections of the painting, previous ones suddenly don't fit with the rest of the painting. I'll sometimes try a glaze or a wash to see if I can change the colour by tinting it with some transparent paint over top. But often I have to rework the area, experimenting with my colours to see if can get them match.

I am artist since 2000. I never tried panels for my art. I used panels to stretch my canvas. Once my art work is done I remove canvas from panel for easy transportation or preservation. My question to you: How you hang this? Do you need custom frame to hang this panel ? Or do you stick wood bars 4 sides to give support for hanging?
@JosephKoensgen
@JosephKoensgen 24 күн бұрын
I mostly put my paintings in custom frames. But you could also add bars to the back and attach hardware for hanging it.

I'm a bit confused... It looks like you're varnishing straight on top of the paint? Why would you do this? What if you need to remove that varnish, is that possible? Please explain, I'm confused! I normally paint acrylic on paper but it's more in a watercolour style so they're always left unvarnished and framed behind glass. However I did have three finished canvases which definitely needed varnishing after getting "fly specks" (flies' crap) all over them thanks to an infested mango!!... Anyhoo, I did some research and everyone agreed the right way to varnish acrylics was to smother the dry painting in acrylic gloss medium to seal it in and as an isolation coat. Leave this for a week and the removable varnish gets sprayed on top of this. I experimented with different looks and mediums but in the end settled on matt varnish , you can't even see it's there! All the experts agreed that varnish should be removable and it always needs this isolation coat so you can remove the varnish without removing the paint with it!

Would a gel matte medium work as well? I have plenty of that but no gloss medium. I just wanted to make sure before buying more product. Thank you so much for the detailed video.
@JosephKoensgen
@JosephKoensgen Ай бұрын
You're welcome, happy to share! As far as I understand, matte medium doesn't make as good of a sealer because it will tend to be more porous than the gloss. That absorbency won't make it as effective at blocking SID as the gloss would. In my research I found that the 2 products I mention in the video - the GAC 100 and Gloss Medium, were recommended the most after testing.

Another masterful job! I thought this one might be a bit more simplified, with less detail than most of your work, but the details of the ocean shading and the orca colorations fading into the background showed that there is still plenty of detail in this painting, with a lot of subtle shading and blending to get just the right look for this subject. Thanks for posting this one Joseph, and I hope more of your great work will be forthcoming.

Thank you so much!! I had gone into this thinking a similar thing about the details of this painting. Getting the subtle tones and shading just right seemed to be just as intensive as something like feathers or fur. I'm always happy to share and I've got to make more videos. Appreciate you watching!

I usually use a black sandable spray primer on hardboard, as I use airbrush and come from the automotive custom paint world, where I would do a white underpainting on black and use opaques and candies to color. I wanted to try working on white Gesso, so I just primed a 20x20 with acrylic Gesso by thinning and spraying it. It came out smooth as silk.
@JosephKoensgen
@JosephKoensgen Ай бұрын
I'm glad to hear that you've had great results with spraying the gesso. I've considered doing it that way and seeing what kind of results I'd get - and to cut down on sanding time. I'll have to give it a try when I have a chance!

Wow, I was so surprised to see your method, using the many small strokes! I've only ever seen people use longer strokes. So because you use such a light amount on the brush, is that why it doesn't leave a whole bunch of edges? Thank you for your lovely video and sharing your experience.
@JosephKoensgen
@JosephKoensgen Ай бұрын
You're welcome, happy to share! Yes, because I work very thin, that seems to help with not leaving any edges. But then that also forces me to work with the smaller strokes, as it will dry incredibly fast when it's that thin. And I'd also recommend a good amount of experimenting with this kind of varnish to see what works for your paintings.
