Enjoyed this tutorial a lot. Thanks for not ruining your video and voice over with nousy background music. That very low, mellow music was perfect. The lower the better. The painting is so, so beautiful. The rim light on the leaves makes it almost poetic.

Thank you so much! Glad you liked it! Yes, I don't want to have music that would be distracting from what I'm showing, and just something to add a little bit of ambiance to the video. Appreciate the nice comments!

I keep watching this video over and over and can't fathom ever being able to achieve your level of realism. The simple low calming background music and tone of your voice over makes this a perfect learning experience. Thank you for sharing your amazing technique and including what you are thinking and why you are making the choices you do with colours, forms etc.

Beautiful painting. The light from the evening sun along with the red tanager give the painting a strong dynamic. Each leaf is done extremely well, and without the attention to detail on every leaf, it would not have done justice to this beautiful bird. Thanks for sharing your thought process regarding your color selections and the initial layout of the painting. Excellent!

He is certainly missed and I still look at his paintings for inspiration and continue to admire the amazing body of work he produced.

I really appreciated the discussion about having patience when there are so many pieces, and your struggle to get the right reds and vibrancy and how you worked through it. Many artists on KZbin make it look like they rarely struggle. I've just picked acrylics up after nearly 40 years, so of course I try something ridiculously difficult like dozens of lily leaves and a red lily, when I've never painted a flower before. Exercising patience and trying not to get bored or discouraged.Thanks!
@JosephKoensgen

You're welcome! I think it is important to share those aspects of art. It is very rare for me that a painting goes perfectly from start to finish - in fact some of them are complete drudgery and only in the last 10% have they come together as I keep working through it. With wildlife realism, or realism of any subject, it just takes time and patience and learning as much as we can, even when things sometimes don't work out. Appreciate you watching and I hope that your painting journey back into acrylics goes well!

Thank you, thank you, thank you. You are indeed a rare breed of artist in the sense that you really do immerse and engage your viewer along with yourself in the painting. As a result of how you manage to immerse both yourself and the viewer, the viewer becomes engulfed in the process. As a viewer watching your video, i feel as if I'm drawn into the painting process with you. The way you explain things as you paint makes way for a window into your thought process - this is a valuable insight so many of us are looking for. If i was to give you a score, it would be 10/10. 100% Congratulations...

The portrayal of light and shadow in this painting are extraordinary. The leaves glow and the bird really appears to be facing the light. I have been painting birds and small wildlife in watercolor for a long time and I am now trying to learn acrylics and oils. The hardest part of acrylics is seeing the paint dried on the palette and not being able to rewet it after all the time spent mixing colors. Thank you so much this very helpful video. Great production value and you are very generous to share your talent and techniques :) Subscribed.

Thank you so much for this kind comment! I'm happy to share and I'm glad that this was helpful. Yes, the paint drying on the palette is something I'm always thinking about. I have gotten used to continuously adding water to my paint mix, but something to look into may be a stay wet palette. There's a piece of foam or something under the mixing surface that you wet and it keeps the paint moist for along time. And I believe some come with a lid so that you can save paint mixtures for quite a long time. Definitely something worth looking into!
@dao8805
@dao8805 6 ай бұрын
@@JosephKoensgen I have never heard of a stay wet palette. Thanks so much for the tip, I'll have to look into it because that paint drying is my biggest adjustment from watercolors. I keep a small spray bottle at hand and periodically mist the paint but having a palette do the job would be more convenient and less distracting, Thanks again and I particularly admire the composition in this, painting ; the arrangement, the colors, everything about it works!

Thank you!! And you're welcome! Glad you enjoyed it! Yes, I tend to favour pencil lines as I find it's a bit easier to correct mistakes I've made during the drawing phase. Especially when it comes to proportions for the animals. Erasing a pencil line has been much easier than wiping off paint and restarting.

Love the way the sun shines through the leaves. I have not done the scarlet tanager, just sketches I have done over the last several years.. I thought maybe i would see if i could get some of my graphite sketches and print up as post cards. It's when I have some money, something more demanding needs it. Spent the last time when my cat was sick. THERE went the money to have prints made, and then pandemic hit, and cost for everything went up. So frustrating at times. I was doing individual English Ivy one at a time. Detail in the surrounding can take more time than doing the actual bird. NOT sure if you discovered this. Smart, about keeping extra background color. Looks Great.
