Hi Jose, your digression at 13:28 is so real. So many people don't understand that there is no right or wrong in taking pictures, this is a creative process where the goal is to express a certain vision that Photographer or Videographer has. Everyone has to start somehow, and I myself for a long time was aiming for the "correct" look, but when I finally realized that the "correct" look is not what I like and began to develop my own taste, that is where the real fun started.

Love the work! When you are getting the -1, 0 and +1 exposures on skin how are you determining that? Are you spot metering on the skin for those values? I am unclear on how you determine when the skin is under, correct or over exposed. With so many different skin tones do you expose them all to the same values? I did see where you used false color but the range of the skin is between 50-75 IRE. Is there a more accurate way to see the IRE value like on a waveform monitor? I would love to know on a 18% grey card what those values are on the waveform monitor. Thanks for your help...
@inkusaido6 жыл бұрын
I believe the "underexposed" image is actually the best exposed image acording to Panasonic since the skin tones are close to what they call middle gray on vlog-l (that'd be 42 and your skintones were between 45 and 55). Maybe if you want to retain more info in the shadows you should softly light them

I'm tired of seeing tutorial videos and how to's by people who have no credible work or real life examples of high quality content. I'm very glad I found your channel, your work is inspirational. A couple of questions if you would be so kind: 1) When grading are you applying a Vlog to REC 709 lut first? 2) When shooting 10bit are using the 150 or 400mbs and the SD card your using for such high data rate? Many thanks for your time.

@@JoseReneVisuals Ok, but because the original image is a flat grey you're then relying on the scopes, etc., to aid you in the contrast-pull. Unless, of course, there is a skill to looking at the flat-grey image? Also, apart from contrast, what if you want/need to colour correct? I completely agree with you. On my Panasonic s5, I shoot in log, but I always expose properly, because I find when I expose to the right, skin tones look terrible to me. I feel like Vlog does not expose like s-log, where I always exposed to the right. And so, yes, you have to figure out what looks good to you before you start shooting, and then just stay consistent. Nico Manansala Hi Nico? It depends on the amount of light of the moment. It's not the same daylight outdoor in October or June, 5pm or 1pm, and it's not the same daylight in the south of Spain than in Norway. In the official Vlog-L document I have found they state that middle gray is at 42 IRE while skintones are best between 42-55 IRE (dark to light skintone) and the optimal highest value should be at max 75 IRE because color channels can clip under 80 IRE.

Exactly. I'm new to this Vlog-L and I found that it is very hard to expose correctly only using the GH5s screen and the monitoring functions built in camera. On the GH5s you can set Zebra1 to 55 and Zebra2 to 75 so you can expose to skintones more easily in camera.

Hi! We are working on a video about this. We use lightmeter for controlled environments (not run and gun situations) but after a while you translate this info well to your false color. I believe that you expose for skin tones too high because the vectorscope for v-log its different. Vlog L starts from 7 and goes to 80 and your false color starts from 0 and goes to 100. So as i can see.. your "-1 underexpose" its actually 0 in reality and your "+1 overexpose" is actually +2. The limits for V-Log L are around +1.5 stop for great results (for most situations) thats why it broke a little the skin (as result the texture) at ''+2''. So my question is.. ''At your -1 did you remember yourself to raise up your total expose by 1 stop in post?" i believe no :D because no Noise to prove that.. But also "Did you try to raise down your 0 by 1 stop to recover some texture?" In conclusion your false color gives you false representation :D
@JoseReneVisuals6 жыл бұрын
Mike Doundoulakis Hi Mike, we know the vectorscope for v-log it's different. All the tests and results here are based on that assumption, 80 as the limit, so we're still right on those numbers. Thanks for your comment!
