thanks, this was very useful! regarding keeping the aperture fixed throughout the shoot, I expect there can be exceptions for close-ups where you may want a shallower DOF, vs wide or establishing shots where you want everything in focus what’s your take on this?

Question. But first,…thank you sir. Very helpful. Noob question: Are those spot meter exposure readings in Vlog….are those with the log assist feature turned on? Many thanks.
@CarterCreativeContent

Yes, meter only measures stops in log. Yes, 709 monitoring is on. 👍

Loved the explanation about how to expose properly .. but is it true that we need to overexpose 1 or 2 stops for vlog?

Awesome stuff! If shooting VLOG on S5ii the image is grey.. do you just view that grey image and use the exposure square... or do you use an internal LUT or external monitor with LUT etc, cheers chief :)

Cameras models/specs don't create a beautiful image. It's the lighting of a scene. This is a proper tutorial. Listen up regardless of what camera you use.

Best take away [for me] is how you stick with a number of settings add or subtract light from there. May seem like a no-brainer to some, but one of these a-ha things for me.

Yeah people tend to overcomplicate settings, this isn't still photography 🤷🏻‍♂️

Many say you supposed to overexpose by 1 or 2 stops in V-Log in order to avoid noise in the shadows, is that so?
@CarterCreativeContent
@CarterCreativeContent Жыл бұрын
I've never used that approach and had no issues with noise.

Good video - although I might argue that you may need to stop down if you're doing a wide establishing shot if you wanted more stuff in focus for that shot.
@CarterCreativeContent
@CarterCreativeContent Жыл бұрын
Possibly yes, the point I'm making is that you don't change your aperture all the time to suit the lighting conditions.
@fullcirclegla
@fullcirclegla Жыл бұрын
I was maybe going to mention this as it’s a good point but I get what Charlie is saying. If it’s a creative decision then great, but don’t do it just to control exposure without thinking about how it affects the shot composition

Well Vlog can’t expose 6.3 stop over. Gerald Undone confirmed what I figured out on my own. You have to set zebras on Vlog at 75% because the highlights clips really easily. I can set my Pocket 4k and 95-100% zebras then used highlight recovery in Resolve to bring a stop of clipped highlights back. I think more latitude maybe available use ProRes Raw or BRAW 12 bit from your LUMIX camera but those 150 megabit per second files aren’t getting 14 stops of dynamic range.

Im going off figures Photo Joseph quoted, he's a Panasonic ambassador. Maybe he's wrong. I'm more interested in the results. Has anyone ever seen Gerald Undones work?? I haven't.

Why don't you use the zebra tool? For example 80%.

Dude your approach is admirable. However suggesting that you'd keep your camera settings locked and finesse your lighting (as you draw squiggles on a static subject onscreen) is misleading. Particularly if the lighting in a scene is not controllable. Contrary to what you say, the big (DP) fish try to light to a preferred stop however if the moment calls for it, they adapt and modify their approach. Period.

Off course you have to be flexible. However, this method is used professionally and I use it all the time so stand by it.
