Josh's version is by far the best - soothing, melancholic and sang with feelings.

His is indeed very nice, but not superior to Jerry Orbach's original (from the cast recording--not the cheesy version that was made, I guess aimed at radio play). Also, this rendition includes some slight lyric changes, for better or worse. Truly though, the original, with just minimal accompaniment, is the most beautiful (I'm not certain exactly what's on that track, but the full complement of instrumentalists for the cast recording was two pianists, a harpist, a percussionist, and one man playing alternately bass and cello). This bigger sound is nice, but if I could only choose one, it would be the original.

I remember my sister Karen singing and playing this song to me on her guitar when I was a child. My birthday was September 1st, so of course I thought she picked this song just for me. It was my favorite song she ever sang to me.
