like liendo said, representation matters. seeing someone who resembles yourself swimming on a larger stage can be an influence, whether you realize it or not. that sentiment doesn't exclude hard work or persistence. it's just an added bonus and gives him the added privilege of maybe motivating more of the next generation to swim and train hard like he does.

I am almost 60yrs old. When I was younger all the movies and TV family shows were about good white fathers. Little House on the Prairie, The Brady Bunch etc. I envied that my Dad was not the same. I developed an attraction for white men, Rock music, Heavy metal, Punk Rock, Country music, blonde hair, and the list goes on. We need to support our black sons the way the many good white Dads have done so eloquently for many years and have continued to do so. Often behind a good black athlete is a white coach. However we have to work with each together both black and white. My husband has adopted my two son. They now have German and Trinidadian citizenship. They are very sportive. One day, probably not in my life time. In a generally white dominated sport like swimming, there would be so many different races of athletes standing on the podium, race would not be a factor anymore, but country. Like it is here in Europe. For this I pray🙏🏿🇹🇹✌️

It’s very important. Showing youth what’s possible is like planting a seed. Josh is an inspiration to many people. A elite athlete with a will to give back is priceless.
