Josh Olson on SOUTHERN COMFORT

Walter Hill’s 1981 thriller finds a National Guard unit trapped in a bloody cat-and-mouse game with local Cajuns in the Louisiana bayou. With its strong echoes of Deliverance, the film is suitably suspenseful and Hill’s direction is typically taut and efficient. Keith Carradine and Fred Ward star as two of the beleaguered guardsmen, the atmospheric score is by Ry Cooder and the eerie, moss-hued cinematography is courtesy of Andrew Laszlo (Innerspace).

I've been telling everyone about this movie for 40 years! Right movie - great cast! Maybe my favorite Walter Hill movie just cause it came in so low profile.

of note is Director of Photography Andrew Laszlo who shot the film using natural lighting. In his book "Every Frame a Rembrandt" he cites that this film open the door for him to shot Rambo: First Blood where that film was also grounded in a natural lighting shots to counter the gloss of Hollywood films at the time. Andrew Laszlo was also DP on The Warriors. His book describes the shots of these 3 films as well as Inner Space--a Joe Dante big budget adventure film

Terrific movie. My only objection was the "super Cajun" number he played. The Cajuns were just too everywhere, too powerful, knocked down rows of trees trying to squash the NG clowns.

I liked this movie a lot but someone needs to do trailers from hell on another Walter Hill film Johnny Handsome (1989). This movie was just so underrated.

Funny you should be reviewing this one, I just watched it for the first time all the way through a couple of weeks ago. I would catch it on Showtime a lot, but only the the ass end. Great little flick that would be a horror film nowadays.

I wonder what happened to the actor that looked like James Franco? I was thinking, "Oh look, that's James Franco." Then I remember he was probably 10 when this came out. I love this movie. Saw it several times. The actor, Franklyn Seales, who played Simms was gay and died of AIDS.

I think the actor you are thinking of is Lewis Smith. He did a few pretty good movies before and after Southern Comfort. I liked him in The Final Terror which was shot around the same time.
