Nick Saban is in the midst of a historic run at Alabama with another College Football Playoff and National Title appearance in the books, and on Late Kick Live Ep 252 Josh Pate discussed the warnings Saban has issued to the College Football world over the years and how the sport decided to react. After initial public confidence the Transfer Portal would even out the talent pool it turns out Nick Saban's warning about the "rich getting richer" could be coming true after all. Will Alabama continue to leverage the Portal to boost the roster? Ditto with NIL. How might the current issues College Football is facing trace back to Nick Saban's arrival at Alabama and the panic that set in for many shortly thereafter? Saban has the ability to help the players become the best that they can be. It also helps that the players are surrounded by the best in the country. A DB practices against the best qb/ receiver in the country all week so Saturday is like a day off. Except Nick won't let them cruise.

We thought last year's D would be much better than they actually were. I'm not talking individuals, but the overall D. Personally, I'm glad Jobe is out of there. I'm not at all surprised that he wasn't drafted. He got a free agent deal, but wasn't drafted. I expect the secondary to be better this season. And when this season is over, I really believe the front 7 will have put themselves in the discussion for all-time great. Anderson, Turner, Braswell, Kennedy, Alexander, etc.....God willing they stay healthy, this pass rush will be insane. We should lead the nation in sacks and there should be a significant gap between #1 and #2 in that category.

Saban has been warning us every time the next gimmick is tried that it isn't going to work and you should really think twice before putting this in. He did this for expanding the playoff, he did it for he transfer portal, and the NIL stuff. He tried to say pump the brakes and think about this, because we will be fine. Nobody listened. Well some did, but we were ridiculed. If college football listened more to Saban, instead of trying futilely to trick him, it would be sooooo much better off.

Why is Bama in a decline?? Lets see. Losing to an 8/4 team that didn’t even have the guts to play Wake Forest, struggling and coming within a hair of losing to a terrible AU team that UGA destroyed, looking like crap for much of the season, not beating out A&M in recruiting - letting a upstart BUY the best class ( UGA shares in this too), not being prepared for injuries - not having much needed depth or good players ready to step up when needed, having an unprepared QB who panicked when everything was on the line, your HC telling Kirby that he really kicked Bamas arse only to whine 5 minutes later about injuries being the reason Bama lost and not his poor preparation and coaching. Add to all this the fact that Nick is 70 and slowing down while Kirby is in his mid 40s and has already created an elite program. Thrown in a spoiled entitled fan base who refuses to accept a loss to a rival. The “we wuz injured crap” doesn’t cut it. Everyone saw UGA manhandle Bama in the fourth quarter. And it’s ironic that no one mentions the fact that Bamas ONE TD came after UGAs controversial fumble near the goal line. All the rest were field goals. UGA had better defense and better offense and proved that a walk-on QB can outperform a Heisman “winner”. Bama might as well face it, their best days are behind them. I could go on as I have other Bama deficiencies I could gladly list but my fingers are getting tired from all this typing. Bama is no longer top dog. Y’all will still win the West but that is where it will end each year. No more SECs or playoff invitations. Bamas brand has gotten tired and old while Georgia is just getting started. 33-18 to you! Nitey nite!

@@to-yr7gn "Bama's best days are behind them" Do you know how many times I've heard that? Yep, the Tide didn't win the NC this last year. But they are in the hunt just about every year. UGA was gutted by graduation and the NFL draft. Let's see what they do this year. I don't make excuses, the Dawgs won, because (from my view) they wanted it more. We'll see what happens this year. It's one thing to have a great season, LSU did that when Burrows was there. Tell me, what happened the year after? I heard/read all the same things from the LSU faithful after they won the NC. History has a habit of repeating itself. Consistency is key, and Saban has proven, year after years he has that with the Tide. Now don't change your post. I'm going to give this video a thumb's up and save this thread so we can revisit this at the end of the upcoming season. Let's see if Kirby who was one of the best assistants Saban ever had can replicate what Coach Nick Saban has done in his time at Bama.

All the other coaches in the NCAA have to deal with the same things Coach Saban does.....Saban just deals with them better. Everyone has 24 hours in their day, no exceptions....Coach Saban just does more with those 24 hours than pretty much anyone else. Coach Saban warned about the portal, and the NIL, but he's utilized them better than just about anyone else. Coach Saban wanted players to get a stipend, but that got shot down....now there is the NIL and his players are making BANK because of it. NOW, the NCAA wants to step in and un-ring that bell because the NIL is getting out of hand in some people's opinion. Well, Coach Saban warned the powers that be about all of this. Now, he's using it, within the rules others have set down, but he's doing that, better than just about anyone else. Here's the bottom line. "Don't hate the player, hate the game" and Coach Nick Saban plays this game pretty much better than anyone else....and he's done it consistently. So, Dawg fans, enjoy that NC, just like the LSU fans enjoyed theirs. Roll Tide Baby.......

That’s a bit of revisionist history. Here is what I remember. Saban struggled putting a NFL level offense on the field. Also I remember him having trouble managing pro player egos. Saban had control of all football operations. 2006 failed draft? Saban. Trading a solid backup QB who lead Miami to a 9-7 record for a well established Bust? Saban. Saban failed at Miami. Face the facts. He’s a legendary coach, but he failed in the NFL.
@tidefanyankee2428
@tidefanyankee2428 2 жыл бұрын
Saban wanted a guy by the name of Drew Brees but he got overruled by the front office in Miami. Saban's brand of coaching doesn't translate well to the NFL. When a player knows he's going to get Millions whether he plays or not he's not going to listen to the coaches. He can just go free agent with some other team in subsequent seasons. In college, Saban knows he's got their attention. Those high school players know Saban can get them to the next level so they listen, or they leave. The players who have a chance at playing stay. The ones who see the handwriting on the wall and know they will be terminal practice team players leave. And then Coach Saban replaces them with some other 4 or 5 star.

Great show! But then, they always are! As a Bama fan, I’ll admit it… I’m totally spoiled rotten! What’s truly unfair is that Bama has had the two greatest college FB coaches of all time, Bear Bryant and Nick Saban. Both will be remembered by CFB fans long into the future and I dare say, Saban will be remembered as the CFB GOAT coach for as long as the sport is played. We fans are so spoiled that we’re upset when we don’t win it all. We now expect to win the Championship every year and that doesn’t feel unreasonable to us. Anything short of a Natty is somehow a bad season. I’m in my mid 50’s and can remember being excited when we had a 7-win season (between Bear and Saban) and had a bowl game and about us getting a 3 star player in recruiting. Even I have to guard against being disappointed when we aren’t the National Champs every year and when we are Champs, I have to remind myself not to think of it as just another “on-par” season, rather than an amazing stellar event. We Bama fans can easily forget just how truly hard it is and how special it is to win a NC in CFB. I pity the coaches who come in after Saban. Good for UGA winning the Natty in 2021, but look out this season. Bama will be right back in the hunt and probably beat UGA out for the NC race with a full deck on offense once again. I think a stat that is freakish is that in 2008, 2010 and 2019, Bama wasn’t in the National Championship game, losing to the eventual National Champions, Florida, Auburn and LSU respectively. Since the 2008 season, Bama has played in the NC game 9 out of 13 times and lost to the National Champions in just 3 of those 9 games! That’s just mind-bogglingly incredible. Think about that. Bama was probably just one win away from 9 to 12 Natties under Saban!

Nick Saban is speaking up about the facts and the truth. Jimbo Fisher completely ignored what Saban actually said, because it is true and Fisher knows it is not a moral and ethical practice for a school to be getting players by giving them the most money. He gave one player over four hundred thousand dollars. Anyone who followed recruiting closely saw what Texas A& M were doing. It is a sleazy thing to try to get to the top using money instead of trusting that the player will choose your school. Saban will go down as leading the right charge to get rules in place to maintain morality in college football. Saban got to where he is 'not" by buying his players. Now A & M are trying to get to the top the easy way. The no rules just exposes the low morality of those taking advantage of it. Like Saban says there needs to be parity, equal amount of money for every player makes it where no cheating is allowed.

I will say this, If Saban never came to T - Town, Alabama still may have won a natty or two. But it wouldn't be the run that Saban has jogged as head coach, with a Forest Gump, coast to coast style run. And just like Forest, everyone that is running behind Saban, are the rest of college football. So they are running behind him, and Saban stops, he turns around. Nick Saban is not blowing up college football, the college football national championship plan has blown up college football. College football became big business, folks could not stand not having an actual number 1 team. So the college football national championship playoffs were born which significantly increased network revenue and is able to crown a national champion every year. A few teams have been able to recruit the best players year after year because those players want to be number one. Those few teams have proven to have the best chance of winning the national title year in and year out. So now, there are a handful of schools which dominate the college football landscape. Alabama, Ohio State, Georgia and a couple others. Unfortunately very few teams will ever get a sniff of a championship because those programs don't offer that opportunity to the majority of 5 star and high 4 star HS recruits. Don't blame Saban for winning, blame the need for a number one team.

Omg. You said Gus yet u didn't say this low down Saban cried and had the rules changed everytime Gus won. He should upped his game and not changed the rules. Slowed down the hurry up offense so defense could sub yet since the beginning of football that was the rule and now u got to have 3 seconds to kick a field goal. How about at least one video of a lil criticism and we might back off a lil. U just don't realize how bias u are about Saban and Bama. Most of us are ready to throw up at these videos. Wish Vandy could score one of his awesome assistant coaches and take the Dores to the next level, like James Franklin did, but without the questionable players who cause trouble.
@MeCanik79
@MeCanik79 2 жыл бұрын
I swear I was just talking to someone about this the other day. I'm a Bama fan, but I honestly would love to see Vandy improve. I would like to see them compete in the SEC. But, there are some problems. With Franklin being an exception, no up and coming coach should ever take the Vandy job. Franklin actually made the program respectable and made a name for himself. He's a rarity. However, not many others could do that same thing. You can take the wrong head coaching job in football (especially college football). Vandy has the same problem in the SEC that Notre Dame has on the national level. The academic standards are very high. And, that's not a bad thing. It's just how it is. This is why Brian Kelly left ND for LSU. He could get to a certain level, but could never win a championship. While he did a good job in recruiting, he just couldn't stock the cupboard like Bama, Clemson, Ohio St, UGA, etc. Eventually, he saw the writing on the wall and left. He had hit the ceiling at ND. At Vandy, you basically have the same problem, but worse. Franklin did a decent job, but let's look at Mason. I thought Mason was a great DC at Stanford and would eventually be a good head coach. Now, I don't know everything about the situation. I don't know what all he brought to the table at Vandy in terms of work ethic, etc. Maybe he wasn't the same as Franklin, but I'm sure he wasn't horrible. Even so, we rarely see a coach succeed at Vandy. So, look where Mason is now. He's back to being a DC and his career is regressing. He was at auburn and he's OK St now. When you don't have any success as a HC, it sticks with you. Other schools don't want to give you a HC job because you couldn't succeed at the last place. But, it's really not his fault. No one can succeed at Vandy. You're in the premiere conference in all of college football and you can't compete. First, you have the academic standards which are going to disqualify most guys automatically. Second, the structure is already in place. Even if Vandy lowered their standards (which would be horrible idea), they still couldn't compete in recruiting against UGA, Bama, Florida, LSU, etc. Besides, I would hate to see Vandy lower it's standards. I'm a huge football fan, but I realize how important doctors and engineers are to the world. My dentist is Vandy alum. I really feel bad for Vandy fans because I can guarantee you that Saban would advise any assistant not to take the Vandy job if it were offered. It's not worth it to take that job just to have the title of HC because it may very well be the last HC job you ever have. And, most of your top notch assistants throughout college football know this as well. So as much as I would love to see Vandy succeed, I really don't know how you do it. It's quite a predicament.
@bobsmoot8454
@bobsmoot8454 2 жыл бұрын
Your very correct on many levels. In football Vandy is vying with schools that have successful, winning existing programs like Northwestern, Baylor, Stanford , etc… Vandy in basketball is recruiting against existing winning programs at UNC, Duke, Baylor again, etc….. Vandy is only able to compete for the best prospects in baseball or perhaps golf too, but no other mens sports. I was there in the early 1970s and I understood that the sports centered around seeing the other teams perform who had future NFL, MLB or NBA players. At least Vandy has an AD once again, which buffers the coaches ever so slightly from the whims of the current administration’s next “important “ agenda. I pull for Bama all the time and now my older daughter’s husband is a UGA alum, so I root for them too, my only issue comes in December when the SEC Championship is played in Atlanta, then in my heart I’m still a Bama fan but tell everyone I’m with the Dawgs, got to keep my baby girls happy.

NIL and the new transfer portal rules are still new and everyone is trying to figure out how it is going to work long-term. In the short-term, you are exactly right. Now, instead of recruiting high school guys who are unproven at the college level, Nick Saban (and everyone else) are recruiting players who are a more proven commodity because they have played 1, 2, 3, years of college football. Not discounting at all how good Alabama has been under Nick Saban, Alabama has been the recipient of some tremendous luck. The Miami doctors recommend that Drew Brees not be signed because of his shoulder and, Nick Saban was the third coach that Alabama tried to hire, with the first two turning them down! As far as offense goes I think Saban had to change because high school football offenses changed a lot after 2007. Back before a lot of high schools ran wing-ts and pro-style offenses. The only parts of the country that ran spread offenses was the west coast and Texas. Now it's everywhere. I don't think you can run the same kind offense that Saban ran 10 15 years ago and win today. The main factor is because they don't run those kinda offense in high school football anymore.

Wow, you went to the trouble of making a user name just for Georgia’s win, sorry, as an Alabama fan if I did that, I’d have waaay too many user names and couldn’t keep track of them. Alabama and Georgia are my two favorite teams in college ball. It was awesome to get to see them play each other on such a grand stage. I doubt the rest of the country felt that way though. I’ve always liked Kirby Smart and was sad to see him leave, we had such killer defenses when he was our defensive coordinator, true, hardcore SEC defense! It’s good to see him with the big win, he certainly deserves it. I wish Kirby could’ve been the past coach that beat him first instead of Jimbo. I know the 4 in a row prior losses to Alabama wasn’t looking good for him so this victory has lifted that pressure. I think that these two teams will be beating up on many teams later this year. Alabama definitely had difficulty last year, a sub-par defense to start the year out, OL troubles, running back woes and yes, injuries. Which you summarily dismiss like losing your two first string wide receivers isn’t going to affect any team. And the two receivers that replaced them in that game knew they stunk it up and both have left the team...and not to the draft! That’s okay, you’re probably new to the sport. For Alabama and Saban to possess all of the flaws that you feel that they have, that says worlds about how great a job that they did, making it to the National Championship. Thank you for pointing that out. Oh, and for “aLabozo” (as you refer to them as on your KZbin page) not only make it to the National Championship, but along the way dealt the one loss to a 12-0 team to win the SEC Championship game with a resounding 41-24 victory! That too is impressive. Let’s see, who was the loser to that flawed aLabozo/Saban team…oh, that’s right, it was the 40 something year old Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs. Everybody has shitty games now and again to include Alabama and Georgia. In the last 41 years, Georgia has won 1 national title, in the same time period, Alabama has won 7. 6 of those during the Saban era. Prior to Kirby’s National Championship win, Georgia was on a record setting losing streak to Alabama at 7 losses in a row. It would be my guess that the Nick Saban's Alabama Crimson Tide has less shitty games. Also, under Saban, Alabama has won 8 SEC Championships, Georgia has played in 3 and lost them all to Alabama. Without even discussing Georgia’s struggle to beat Clemson by 3 points or the strength of schedule last year (Alabama SOS ranked 8th while Georgia’s SOS ranked 32nd), you have to admit, these are tough stats to argue with but based on your last post, you probably will. How many times have we heard the media crying out (and KZbin posters)… Alabama’s dynasty is over, it’s through! And then Saban pulls out another SEC or National title (sound familiar, it should?). Saban’s not through nor is Alabama, wait and see, just as the others have seen. GO SEC!!!

Yes you are correct! Saban will eventually leave College Football but what you fail to realize is that Saban's PROCESS will continue to be coached or preached by his disciples 😮 Saban's hold on College Football will not end with him... Once he is gone then one of his disciples will pickup where he left off 😮

True comment ! All these haters out there mad cause Josh don't talk about their teams ! Who wants to hear about the bottom feeders of college football ? Cry babies if you want your team talked about, beat the top teams !! I'm a huge Bama fan and Mn Gophers fan! I don't hear my Gophers talked about and I'm not bashing the show ! Do like Georgia did and get respect ! Bama is human. They lost to an average Texas Am team . Roll Tide....

Boy please. UGA is new money like a mf. Nobody respects UGA like Bama. You gotta win 6 more of those 🏆 and then go to another 2 Nattis outside the 6 you won. Clemson won 2 Nattis and people still don't look at them like Bama. Continue your success. But STOP acting like we look at UGA like we do BAMA. FOH
