LSU Not in the top 10 is a joke! SEC west Champs 2 of the last 4 years. (Is the SEC west not the hardest conference in college football?) SEC Champs 3 times in the last 15 years. And 4 appearances in the National title game with a 3 and 4 record in the last 20. That is the definition of a top program. You are wrong in this . This can actually be proven. LSU has had to beat 3 teams on this list to win national titles, BUT we are not mentioned. COME ON JOSH. I know you don't dislike LSU but this list is wrong not to include us. And to mention us in the same breathe as Tennessee? I may be wrong but I believe they have beat us once in the past 20 years, and that was this past season. @@legacyofthe243 My freshman year was Richt's first year and it has been so great being generally in the conversation but we were an after thought on the national stage because we never broke through. Nebraska, Florida State, Tennessee, Miami, Southern Cal, Florida were all where we are now and it has disappeared for them. So yeah, I"m gonna enjoy this knowing it certainly can end very quickly.

Not really. LSU is one of more talented teams, year in and year out. They are consistently a 2-4 loss team with the exception of the Burrow run. They were dysfunctional in 2020 and 2021 and they had just moved on from Les Miles in was it 2015 or 2016? They caught lightning in a bottle in 19 but haven't been good consistently. That being said, they are trending up. Still work to be done and can't put them here after a 4 loss season but win the west a couple more years and then you see the consistency you'd want from a top program

@@danielbush7914 I guess time will tell how Brian Kelley does, but he has a much better track record than Dan Mullen. I'm not sure why his program just imploded 3 years later, but I doubt that will happen with Coach Kelly. He has consistently won wherever he went, has made winning teams out of 4 different programs, and has been a head coach for over 30 years. I like our odds.

Sooner fan here. Easily an argument for LSU’s inclusion as well as Tennessee’s to a lesser degree, though I think Tennessee can say they had a better 2022 than LSU (with all due respect). I’m not real high on Penn State or Notre Dame. Utah, USC, and OU all have arguments for exclusion, too. The thing about OU is that they just experienced their first losing season in 25 years, after losing by 3 to #10 Florida State in Orlando. The 25 years is a good reason to bet on the Sooners bouncing back, but also an argument to exclude if things turned South so quickly when they had the first head coach ever leave the university for another program (TBOW to USC). I’m in wait and see mode on OU. Sky isn’t falling. They’re replenishing the bare cupboards that were looted. I’m hoping they regain their swagger, so we’re not limping into the SEC gauntlet!

Quick comparison between LSU and USC: Similarities: Last year, both had a great year after hiring a new top caliber head coach. Both lost in their respective conference championships. Differences: Record from the last 5 years: LSU: 46-19, USC: 33-24 (Keep in mind that USC played fewer games and yet still managed to rake in more losses--in the PAC-12 no less!) Average Recruiting Ranking from the last 5 years: LSU: 7th, USC 19th. (Even the current rankings have LSU up on USC by six spots! Should not the recruiting rankings factor highly in this discussion, since they measure where the top players in the country want to play? Isn't that a pretty good indicator as to where these programs are currently?) National Championships in the last 5 years: LSU: 1, USC: 0. Record against JP's top ten list in the last 5 years: LSU 6-3, USC: 3-7.

USC is definitely not a top 10 program right now. LSU should be ahead of Notre Dame, Penn State, Michigan, Utah, OU, and very obviously USC. I am a Sooner fan for perspective.

There's zero justification to rank USC above LSU. LSU had bad seasons in 2020 and 2021, which were outliers in all the 2000s. Aside from those 2 seasons, they haven't finished with worse than 8 wins since the 1990s despite being in the toughest division in CFB. USC has been an afterthought despite being in one of the weakest P5 conferences since Pete Carrol left. USC is just a few seasons separated from a recruiting class ranked in the 70s.

I think USC is about to be really good again. Not a fan for the record perfectly happy with 4-9, but they are going to average 45pts/game that D doesn't even need to be ok. Just not being pathetic means they win10-11 games. TCU and Cinci are mid majors that have been good, but are no threat to the elite programs in the SEC/Big 10 (counting USC as BIg 10 because they will be soon.) By no threat, I saying almost nobody choosing between playing at those schools is going to choose them over the USC type team.

I'm a Tennessee fan. I think we are a top ten program all the time, but currently... I agree with you. My problem is not having LSU in there. They've had 4 different coaches go to an SEC championship since 2000. They've won 3 NC with 3 different head coaches. I'd say that program has done something special in the last 22-23 years. Okay so talking programs, Michigan is the most winningest program in the country, owns OSU in all time, longest streak, and current streak by a wide margin victories. Now talking about current performance and future: back to back BigTen Champs, 12-2 and 13-1 in both years, and back to back playoffs appearances. Their 2023 team is looking to be even better than last year's team, their 2024 recruiting class is shaping up to be their best in over 2 decades so their future is looking even brighter than what they've done in the past 2 years with making the playoffs and a combined record of 25-3...now, what argument would you have to have Ohio State or Clemson over Michigan? Michigan's program is definitely on the rise and in a big way.

I’m an Auburn fan but LSU deserves to be on that top 10 with the best record championship-wise in the 21st century with the exception of Alabama. Won 3 and played for 4 titles, undefeated regular season in 2011 and 2019. Also has best recruiting grounds geographically speaking since only major school in the state and nearest top-program is hundreds of miles away. And then it’s also only school with 3 consecutive coaches to win national titles, with 2 of those coaches being arguably mediocre which just speaks more to the program as a place anyone can win. Not saying that this video is wrong based on the last 10 years metric, bc they haven’t been as consistently good in the playoff era, but according to this video future trajectory also matters. For example most people would agree that if ND, Utah, or Penn state won a title then it would be astonishing. But if LSU were to win then the it be par for the course as a top coach leading a top program to victory

I have been quite annoyed with the obnoxiousness of Georgia fans in the last 6 months, but it's nearly impossible to make a case they aren't the best program in the game right now. They went back to back after losing an insane amount of NFL talent on defense, and don't have the glaring question marks that their near peers do going into 2023. There is a QB question, but not nearly as uncertain as say Bama or Ohio State, and there's virtually no reason to believe the rest of the team isn't going to reload at the same level as the last two seasons. The 2023 natty is Georgia's to lose.

12 years ago, Ryan Day was the WRs coach at Boston College, Lincoln Riley was at East Carolina, Brent Venables was about to be fired as Oklahoma's DC, and Utah had yet to play a game as a member of a P5 conference. Moral of the story-it's impossible to predict that far down the road. Also, after all of the appeals were said and done, Penn State wound up receiving a lesser penalty for the Jerry Sandusky scandal than USC did for Reggie Bush receiving money from an agent, which is still mind-boggling.

Josh, IMO, you can't do a list like this without defining a specific time frame. You talk about judging teams on the past three years in the beginning, and then you proceed to list what every team has accomplished over the past ten years. Clemson has been tremendous over a ten year time frame, but their "trajectory" is down, and even their administration knows they are falling behind on money, and are desperate to leave the ACC. I suspect a team like LSU would blow Clemson off of the field, probably next year, but certainly in years to come. The LSU program is set up for success, more than Clemson, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Penn State.

Great show Josh. 2023 will be a very interesting year from a program perspective going forward. So many schools have a good or bad year but that's all about a team not a program. I like the way you are organizing your thoughts on programs over time. USC's biggest issue is defense and a slightly over looked area is their Special Teams. The key to Lincoln Rileys huge potential is squarely on the defense improving 25-35% over last year statistically. They have brought in a very interesting recruiting class but also benefited again from the TP so in my humble opinion the lift here is not as severe as it felt going into 2023 exiting the Tulane loss.

I think bama is better program than Georgia, but Georgia has had the best stretch of success. I would also put Clemson at 3, ohio state 4, then Michigan 5 despite recent success. Clemson has proven they can beat the Bama types, they just can’t do it consistently. But that’s more than even Ohio State has done. LSU should be in over USC. I would put them where Penn st is, then Penn st 8, Oklahoma 9 and then Utah at 10. I would only have one pac12 team in, and it should be either Utah or Oregon. As a Utah fan I like Utah for what they do with less. If they continue to gain momentum their ceiling is higher with their current staff. It’s because what they do with their talent. Getting top 10 with top 40 talent, is crazy. 1. Georgia/Bama 3. Ohio State 4. Clemson 5. OU I don't see another way to look at that. Am interested to see OU, Clemson, and USC in the future because some shuffling could happen there. But any top 5 that isn't those names I just struggle to take seriously.

LSU has had more success and better recruiting than half of these teams, Josh. In another video, you had LSU as the second best program the last 20 years behind Bama (obviously). ND hasn’t won anything and lost to Marshall, but just like every year ND is a top 10 team because reasons
