Good video, thanks for sharing. Nice choice of wheels, too. The lighter unsprung weight will help with handling performance in addition to economy, but you probably already knew that. Tip: store your wheel lugs in the freezer for a day before you install. They should fit and press in much easier!

Finally got some wheels! Look good. I got a set of VMR V710's a couple months ago in 18x9.5 et 45 and it rubbed a little on the outside fender lip, which I rolled. But mainly it rubbed a lot on the inside wheel well. I had to raise my ride height (I was tucking previously on a 17x8 245 tire) about an inch and had to cut a little off the plastic fender liner and bash in the wheel well with a hammer to get 275's to fit properly without rubbing. I can imagine with your offset you will have it worse than me lol. The front 245/40r18 on a 18x8.5 et 45 fit with no problems, didn't even have to touch it.

Hi Josh, nice job mate - really nice job on your down-to-earth commentary and approach that is so helpful to us learners. I've seen your vids over the last few years but am not a KZbin fanatic, so sorry if I have missed stuff. I am an Aussie from Adelaide (where your car was made) and have been a LS guy for a long time. I have raced motorbikes all over the world for ever but I am just getting into tracking things with 4 wheels - mainly NW USA (The Ridge, Pacific, PIR,Thunder Hill and Laguna). I am becoming addicted to your world and my GOAT gets lots of comments on track. Although I live in AU, I keep a race bike and a very nicely tuned 2006 Pontiac GTO in Seattle - 6 speed, 18" wheels, coil-overs, bushes, fully adjustable suspension, big brakes, DOT/track tires and etc. To get my lap-times down, I believe I need to tune my geometry - mainly 'camber???' (-I think!). Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Cheers,
@JoshsCarCorner7 жыл бұрын
Greetings, mate! Always love hearing from a fan Down Under! Sounds like you've got about the same suspension as I do. For me, it was getting cross camber dialed in. My rear control arm bushings were shot, giving me -0.6 degrees on one side and -1.8 degrees on the other. Replacing those bushings with Pedders poly solved that problem, now I'm -0.2 on both sides. Also, my shocks are adjustable. I try different levels of stiffness to suit the track I am at. For example, Road America has massive rumble strips so if you plan on using them and you turn the stiffness up too high, the shocks will eventually overheat and lose their effectiveness. However, if I'm at a track like Blackhawk Farms with smaller rumble strips, I can turn the stiffness up and keep the tires in better contact the with road. Starting camber of the front wheels is big too, because I have learned they don't tip in nearly as much as the rears do when the suspension compresses, so having camber dialed in from the start helps. You can have too much, especially if you run a square setup (all tires the same width). I now have a staggered setup so I'm eager to do another track day and see how much how camber I can run now that I have more rear end grip. Hope this helps!

Josh, first of all your videos are great and have helped me figure stuff out while im rebuilding my son's 06 GTO. We're finishing up the suspension right now and im researching wheels. He actually likes these 810s and ive been trying to figure out the BS for the wheels. So while im watching this video i feel like i missed the sizes you are running. If you could let me know the width and BS I'd really appreciate it.

The front wheels are 18 x 8.5 with 245/40/18 tires. The rears are 18 x 9.5 with +58 offset and 275/35/18 tires. I opted for +58 offset over the +50 because most guys go for +50 and then they end up having to roll or dramatically grind their rear fender lips.
@persioabreu7376 Жыл бұрын
@JoshsCarCorner thank you for the quick response. My measurements had me thinking the 18x9.5 +58 on the rear too. Did you go +35 or +45 on the 18x8.5 in front?

5x120 fits most BMW's and all newer Camaro's, Corvette's, CTS-V's also use 5x120. Fbodys and 6th and 5th gen Corvette's used the old 5x4.75 or whatever it was.
@autonut217 жыл бұрын
Grajeda I am quite sure all those cars besides the BMW run 5x4.75" which is 5x120.65.
@JoshsCarCorner7 жыл бұрын
He is partially correct. Zets platform cars do run a 5x120 bolt pattern (G8, 5th Gen Camaro). But, they also have a 67.6 mm hob bore, so the wheels do not transfer over to the GTO without modification. The backspacing is more aggressive for those cars too as they have bigger wheel wells.

Josh's Car Corner - thanks for the response. My suspension is all stock, so I'm debating as to whether or not I'll need to roll/grind the lip and use 5 mm spacers based on your experience with the inside of the wheel well. I'll be getting the same wheels, but in gunmetal. 8.5 ET45 on the front, 9.5 ET58 on the back with 245s and 275s respectively. Thanks for the videos by the way. @JoshsCarCorner7 жыл бұрын
Fabio Lopes I think it depends more on which tires you go with than the size. That's why I went with the Continentals, because they are advertised as having a softer sidewall than other summer tires so they ride nice. I thought going slightly oversized next time, though. But more for fuel economy.

Hey Josh - I've recently discovered this channel - outstanding information well presented. Would you mind answering a few questions: Exactly which wheels from VMR did you use? I caught that you used the V810 FF on the front - what wheel size? And on the rear, which VMR did you use? Also the 810FF? Was it 18 x 9.5? And finally, the tire sizes that worked for you? My 06 is coming along - it's my second one, the first falling victim to a divorce. Both brazen orange. Current one only has 21K miles. It's at 389 HP and 384 Torque at the wheels in it's current setup. I've got everything on hand to do a cam swap as well as a FAST intake manifold together with the 102mm TB. Kooks long tubes, H pipe, 3" all the way back, and some awesome custom made mufflers that quiet the whole affair enough to keep harmony in the neighborhood. I've got the Tremec Magnum transmission in it - which was a bit of a soul-crushing mod. Now that it is done, I I love it but that darn project truly sucked. Anyway, thanks for all the great info. I'll post a link to your youtube channel on the GTO forum.

The wheels are all VMR V810FFs, 18 x 8.5 front with +45 offest, 18 x 9.5 rear with +58mm offset. Currently running 245/40/18 front, 275/35/18 rear. Will soon be upgrading to 285/35/18 rear and possibly 255/40/18 front as I found a way to get more front suspension clearance.

A Couple of years ago, I did the VMR 710's on my 05 GTO. 18 x 8.5 with 45mm back spacing on the front. 18 x 9.5 in the back with 50mm back spacing. I had the rear fender lips rolled and re-painted by a professional body shop. Running the stock size 235 tire up front but went to 275/35 18 in the rear. The car looks so much better and I have lot better traction in the rear. Ride and handling were unaffected. My suspension is still stock.

I understand the rules are far more stringent on your side of the pond what with annual tax and testing, MOTs and what not. I wouldn't blame you for having everything done by professionals. But having said that, the amount of money you lot have to spend just for the privilege of owning a car is in my opinion ridiculous. I can understand why public transportation is so prevalent in Europe. I would ask you keep in mind that this video is intended to educate and inform owners in the US what to look for when purchasing different wheels for their car. We have the freedom to customize our cars to our liking, and it's a freedom I would not be willing to give up.
