Danny Gatton was a local hero here and I saw him many times. He started as a banjo player so his pick and three on guitar came naturally. I have never heard another guitarist who could endlessly attack a tune at such a furious rate. and I appreciate that you named him as an influence.

Josh said he 1st heard Gatton-and started workin on the style,and before he knew it a year had gone by. Shows how much serious work, pro's like Josh put in on guitar,to get to that incredible level in their playing.

Josh Smith is just incredible. A couple years ago I had never even heard of him until I started seeing him showing up in videos at Norm's Rare Guitars and I was blown away wondering why this guy isn't a household name. Great video. Thanks for posting.

I've tried to learn hybrid picking techniques and I believe I must have a mental block going. I've been a flat-picker for so many years that I find it impossible to do. It's very frustrating! Part of the reason might be that I'm left-handed. I learned guitar the standard right-handed way. That's great for left-handed fretting work but my right hand technique suffers as a result. Guys like Josh here, Duke Levine, Greg Koch and so many other really exceptional cats that have mastered hybrid picking I salute. 👍

Great video...I've only come to this country guitar "revelation" a couple months back. I understand exactly what you meant in this video by how country music requires a different type of playing. I've been a rock player for the past 25 years and I feel like I've been learning a whole new language this last couple months and I still can't even complete a full sentence with it let alone speak it fluently. But it's a worthy road to follow. Once again great video!

The man is a superstar among guitar players. During the 80s as I was learning to play guitar and being in a classic rock band my “go to” for guitar players was Shrapnel Records. I spent my weekends at different record stores looking for guys like this.

Back in those days I was also into Cal Collins and Pat Martino. You’re right nothing really new that sticks out for me as far as rock and roll. So now I find myself going back to the old jazz and blues players and of course the new ones like these guys.

@@MikaelLewisify Thank you for the encouragement my friend....I'll try Haha......I can pick and involve 1 finger halfway decent......but to be able to pick and have the middle ring and pinkie involved simultaneously..........just above my pay grade at the moment Haha. Ironically when I started playing I concentrated on the 1 finger per fret thing with my left .......and my left pinkie is one of my stronger fingers........I just should have paid more attention to the right hand as well.

Bob Cummings...I’ve been playing for 35 years and I’m still discovering I can do things I’ve told myself I couldn’t do. For example, I have stubby little hands and told myself I couldn’t use my thumb to hold the bass note on chords. After 35 years I finally put my mind to it and discovered that, with a lot of practice, I actually can do it. Nessecity is the mother of invention. You’ll be able to do it, when you really need to.

@@MikaelLewisify You are so right brother ....so right....It's like anything else really....the more you do it the more comfortable you get ....ofcourse some people are naturally gifted and it comes easier ......but it really comes down to that 10,000 hr thing ......practice makes perfect . By the way I just checked out Fyre and Reign ......loved it ...great stuff ....and what a great back drop to film it to. Not sure if you are more a acoustic player than electric...but if you are and you haven't already checked him out ......listen to some Mike Dawes ......what a unique approach to the instrument.😎

@@bcummings2187 having the pinky involved too during hybrid picking is really hard.. Albert Lee does it to great effect. Using just the ring and middle is a bit easier but definitely takes work. I'm currently in the middle of the process lol

Everyone talks about shredders (metal and virtuosos) but serious guitarplayers know that the real beasts are the country twang players. Brent Mason, Johnny Hiland and Danny Gatton and also bluegrass players. Crosspicking and hybridpicking and playing over changes that’s where it’s at imo, that separates the good players from the complete “beast mode” players.

Yeah and I'm sure a player like Josh Smith is heavily familiar with Jerry Reed. More people need to know who Josh Smith is as a player. He seems like one of the most humble virtuoso type players I've maybe ever seen. Really seems eager to "share".

So, the guy from 'Green Day' who can't play gets a signature model guitar,......and Josh Smith doesn't have his own signature model??
@mab8485
@mab8485 4 жыл бұрын
Both of those guys can do stuff the other can’t. Billie obviously can’t play like Josh, and Josh can’t write pop/rock songs with big hooks that appeal to the masses and sell tens of millions of albums. If I was in the guitar business, I’d sell the guitar that could shift the most units and make me the most money.

And Ibanez didn’t even let Petrucci put some of his ideas into creation of the JPM model. “Okay John you’re a killer guitarist but you don’t bring much to the table.” Ibanez instead gave Korn everything they wanted because at that era nu metal was huge and DT was at the end of disbanded. And now Petrucci’s guitar despite its high price just surpassed JEM as the best selling sig series.
