I applaud Josh Waitzkin. He devoted much of his younger years to chess, but he didn't let it take over his life. Now, as an adult, he has a much more "rounded" personality.

It was the name of the book. The Ben Kingsley character (Pandolfini) is searching for the next Bobby Fischer, as are many of the parents. This is the conflict between Josh's parents and between Josh and his father and his coach; they see his tender heart as a weakness. Josh refuses to become like Bobby Fischer and still becomes champion.

He was a prodigy, he beat his first master at age 10 with a queen, rook sacrifice, at age 11 he drew against kasparov (it was an exihbition tho, but still) and he was a IM at 16, he actually has beaten many GM's...just becuase he did not get an official title dosent mean he wasnt a prodigy...and he could of gotten the GM title if he would of accepted the draw at the world championships but declined and try to push for the win.

Bobby Fischer is Bobby Fischer. Josh Waitzkin is Josh Waitzkin. They're both different people, stop comparing Josh to Bobby- they both made their own names for themselves.

It is a weird statement. I think he meant that he became self-aware while he was playing. Fischer actually had the same problem, which is why he started making those crazy demands about playing far away from crowds and the like. He was scared to lose or make a mistake because of the spotlight on him. See the "Karpov on Fischer" video that's also on KZbin.

You do not have to be the best prodigy in the world to be a prodigy at something. Also, he could have been a GM if he wanted that...this is a known fact, period. Anyone that becomes an IM in their teens can easily go on to become a GM if they want to.

Lol I'm not sure what kind of standards you have but reaching 2500 as a chess player can hardly be considered a bust ESPECIALLY as a junior. If you want to say it's a bust as a professional, OK, I hear ya. But to accomplish that as a junior... that's rare.

@blackoil911 Not a great chess player? Yeah, an 11 year old a with draw against Kasparov isn't a great chess player. Who did you beat when you were 11 years old? You will never match his ability, so why should anyone take your premise that he is not a great player seriously? '

The cool kid from the movie would never turn out to become this guy.. He's so full of himself, but has he gotten close to the great expectations? The next Bobby Fischer, give me a break.. This guy is an IM and he's getting close to the age of 30... His nemesis from the movie is probably top 5 in the world right now xD

How come in the movie "Searching For Bobby Fisher" as a young kid Josh had straight hair with bangs. Now that he's older he has kinky hair. Did he suffer a trauma that caused kinky hair. Or did he get a tight perm?

@blackoil911 The world championship under 18 something like that (it was not the World Championship as in challenging Anand or any of those guys), and if you believe and IM is not a great player then you are crazy..BTW he was a "strong" IM, he was over 2500 at one point and stayed there for a while, but he quit before getting all the GM norms.

no, not true. Karpov did everything he could to play Fischer. Also after it was decided that there would be no WC-match between them. Karpov even offered to play "Fischer Random" with him. Do not call somebody a "moronic idiot" when you haven't even checked the facts yourself. All the facts are readily available on wikipedia and numerous other sites and books.

Trying? Sorry, but you're either intelligent or you're not. The word you're looking for to call Josh is, "pretentious". You think that he's trying to pretend to be intellectual, but he's not; Josh is a very intelligent person.
