HS2 is a moronic idea. I'm all for upgrading our rail network but why do it with something that's barely an improvement and doesn't embrace new technology like other countries are? It's a bit like the Edinburgh tram project - that was ridiculous. Why can't they build a MagLev network that draws a lot of solar power - maybe panels on the train roof to assist with powering the train facilities. The train could have batteries to store that energy and also plug in to rapid chargers at stations and when not in use. Each maglev section of the track or the track in general could have solar panels - or stick wind turbines on too - anything renewable because it's not only renewable energy it's free energy. Maybe we could even have the Hydrogen powered MagLev trains (and that's not as confused as it sounds before you say 'that's not how MagLev works at all') - trains have power needs beyond propulsion. A thousand people charging their phones, using wifi, lighting, cooking etc. On commuter routes where the trains don't have to go as fast we could have double decker maglev trains... until someone realises they just got hundreds of carriages built, it's the day to give the press a journey on them and present them to the world - and, oh, they don't fit through the loops that the MagLev uses.
