I was allowed "book the cook" which was fantastic and when I went to get a snack, they insisted I took more than one. SIA seem to understand customer service better than most airlines.

South African Airways went bankrupt because of negligent mismanagement, corruption and nepotism and not because of COVID. It remains a national embarrassment and as South Africans we do NOT want that airline operative any longer. We generally refuse to fly SAA and always seek alternative options. The service on this flight is symptomatic of the general ignorance and uncaring attitude of all service industries in South Africa in general. We no longer want this stinking airline or attitude in our country, but being that SAA is a government institution that says it all. We have the most corrupt government on earth in all likelihood.

As a South African who travels with SAA quite often because we live abroad, I can say that its always been a pleasant experience. We've tried them in economy and in business class. The only issue in business class was that the menus are always presented the same, and what you see on the menu is not whats necessarily onboard. I do think this is what happened with the seabass incident you mentioned, perhaps the crew member wasn't aware that theres no seabass on board?! I do think you should have asked about that instead of just 'assuming" and/or guessing what the issue was. Its a bit of a bummer that you were limited to snacks... because again, there were not much limitations on snacks on the SAA flights we have been on. I remember once in economy, our toddler was super fussy and a crew member brought her some ice cream, which was such a sweet gesture! I do however think theres abit of an inconsistency issue with SAA as so many people have had either a really great experiences or just really below average but all in all, there is always room for improvement. I am rooting for them 💯🇿🇦

He is a customer who paid for his business class seat, so he does not have to ask anything, and he is perfectly entitled to even assume - which is what any of us normally do when we do not receive explanations about something -; it is the crew's/airline's obligation to serve passengers in a manner consistent with the service for which they have paid.

If you upgrade at the gate or check in, it would be impossible for them logistically to have a meal that you choose, unless it is the meals on flight

The snack episode, for me, is much worse than the fact they did not have your main. Such small incidents smack of pettiness, control, snark, and cutting costs. One of these events on a flight is enough, like you said, to mar the entire journey experience.

What a misleading title!!! They did not run out of food. They ran out of your preference. There were other choices. They usually have chicken, red meat, fish and vegetarian as an option in business class. This means you had 3 other option to choose from. It even states on the menu that your choice may not always be available. This is understandable. Imagine business class has 40 passengers...they dont load 40 chicken,40 beef, 40 fish, 40 veg. That would be 160 meals for 40 passengers. Its an aircraft not a hotel. So they load a limited mix of all the choices totalling 40 meals and sometimes they run out of a choice because the passengers served before you selected that meal. If you needed a certain food to accommodate a specific diet that you are on, you well know that you should call the airline to prebook that meal and it will be loaded with your name on it and not be given to anyone else. Some of your comments are just for sensationalism

@@zokeaye What? I have been in the airline industry for 25+ years, including experience with Airline Catering. I have never heard of any ICAO regulations on crew vs passenger meals. The reality is that business class entrees and cockpit crew entrees are often the same. It is supposed to allow more choices for business class passengers, but depending on the carrier, the choice often goes to the crew.

I’ve flown all over the world, not nearly to your level Josh, but been around. South African Airlines was the worst experience ever, to make matters worse they robbed money right out of my small bag for the overhead. I reported immediately upon landing near our Safari location but like all SAA issues it was ignored. It was my own fault, after a 15hr flight, I was a little less than at my best, upon boarding the ATR the agent said my bag needs to be checked, I’ve flown all around the globe with this small bag in the overhead in every size aircraft. What I didn’t realize as I was beyond tired, she ran my bag through through the X-ray and saw my packet of cash which is why she bull dogged me into checking the bag. Upon landing in the bush, yep, you guessed it, she and her partner had helped themselves to $1500usd. Will never fly SAA again ever. Again, my fault but after being up for 24hrs I wasn’t at my best and paid the price.

Depends on where you are going but overnight flights are best in my view because you arrive in the morning when onwards public transportation is starting up,etc with a long day flight you often arrive when things are shutting down leaving you at the mercy of often unscrupulous taxi drivers.

Great review, Josh. I prefer day time arrivals to limit potential upsets to my circadian rhythm. South Africa has a highly developed hospitality industry so a lot is expected of their onboard service. Although Ethiopian has a fairly good hard product, their on board service cannot come close to SAA''s.

SAA has always been decent, but the catering in Business has always felt limited in terms of items running out etc etc. Feels like they load a mix of the precise number of meals, which inevitably means a chunk of passengers miss out on their first option. It doesn’t take much for things to go wrong. And then I used to get double frustrated when I’d find the crew eating in the galley, on occasion, options that were not available to passengers. Seems like pre-ordering is the way to go if they want to minimise waste. Otherwise, in the air it’s still a decent airline.

Crews can prepare their meals in the galley as long as they served all the passengers first then they can get the leftovers. That's how it's suppose to work cuz I've only seen flight attendants eat their meals after they have come by n served all the passengers. That way a customer cannot complain about the crew eating the food before hand. On super long haul flights crews may eat after each service is completed for the customers. If they are eating the airlines food before the customers even though they can grab the leftovers usually after the pilot crews get what's left and then the flight attendant can grab a leftover. That is a no-no from what I've seen over my 60 years of flying on many airlines around the world.

I flew South African Airways years ago from Johannesburg to Rio. It was a great flight...daylight all the way. The most enjoyable part...for me...was flying over the Namib Desert. The sky was crystal clear so from my window I could see where the sands of the desert went *right up to* the green tropical waters of the Atlantic. I got a great photo of it that I have to this day.

Hi Josh! Always fun following your trips. I'm in the industry so have seen quite a bit myself, Mom's on one continent, wife's family on another and Granddad and our family on a third so mostly same city pair travels. Airfare offers makes changing aircraft at select hubs enroute the "name of the game" when you have to pay. Congrats on securing the upgrade. At least the hard product didn't disappoint. Whether that was worth USD 600 on a nine-hour (oh, wait, ten hour) flight... well - you can prob gauge better... I'd certainly take it! Even on PushPaka airlines... Prefer daytime flights, after 6+ hours at 8000ft cabin pressure altitude (Boeing 787 / A350 it's 6,500ft - note the improvement!) everyone is going to deplane a little groggier, nap/lieflat or not. So most likely you're going to catch sleep on terra firma after the experience, which you always do anyways when you recap in the hotel. The body lags behind the soul - or so the American Indian said hidden under the stairs on Ebene 1 at Frankfurt... I wouldn't expect any feedback from the airline "airways" or whatever. Try TAM-Brasil next time and compare the two. Perhaps Aerolineas (Argentinas - thru BUE - also A330 or A340-300) give you a better experience! Would love for you to share! I feel you’re rested and ready to go on travel day, and it’s all about enjoying the travel experience from entering the airport to clearing customs on the other side. Day flights is all about the hard product and the customer service offered during your journey. Overnight flights… get on… feed you as quick as possible and lights out! Ha ha 🎉 I wonder if the cabin crew knew your seat was an upgrade??? And the sea bass was maybe given to another passenger if they had taken too many orders for fish? Weird one??? The snack service… WOW… someone woke up on the Side of the bed. All the other food service looked great. Enjoy your time in South America and as always… stay safe, and keep on delivering great content for us to enjoy and enjoy you on your journey through aviation. Came here to watch a man fly, saw a man cry. Spent all video complaining about about a fish. Coming soon to a cinema near you. Finding Sea Bass, starring Cahill 😂 "The other 2 meals are not compatible with my diet" - I respected that statement, thinking you were a Pescatarian... until you had the Springbok, then you lost me. Last time I checked not many diets allow both fish and Venison/Meat. The way you chowed down your prawn curry seamed like you enjoyed it. Why not say something good about that instead?

I do like an overnight flight longhaul, even though I don't often sleep in economy. However, next month I'm doing a day flight on Singapore Airlines business class London to Singapore so I'm very much looking forward to testing the service experience!

I'm Brazilian. On my last trip by the SAA the meals weren't so good, some members of the crew were rude, but not all of them. Brazilian airways seem to me more expensive and the meals not so good as well.

just did Osaka Cebu 3 hour stop over in manila, over night stop in Cebu, then another 26 hours home to Ireland with 6 hours in Dubai waiting for next flight, shattered how you do it never know, mind you i am nearly 80 so that might be the deciding factor lol. off back to Osaka next year love the place.
