Flew Heathrow to Perth with Qantas in July, just over 16 hours. Ended up with a middle seat in the middle of the row, but got lucky that the aisle seat was empty by doors close. All your points were echoed on that flight; meals were great, the crew are always doing laps of the cabin, and are just the nicest people, and the IFE is super varied. On one of my flights the QANTAS crew very politely asked me if I'd agree to move seats (aisle seat to similar aisle seat) so another passenger could sit with his colleague. I had no issue and they gave me 2 Penfolds bottles of wine from the galley and a $100 duty free voucher as thanks. They were so thankful and polite. I've seen other airlines (American) who just rudely tell you to move and that's it. QANTAS is always great to fly on in my 30 years of flying with them.

Great review! I used to fly on the Qantas 787-9 Perth to London flight (16-17h) quite frequently in economy. I'm not sure if you're aware, but the storage "net" (for lack of a better word) on the back of the chair in front of you is actually designed for your legs to go in... essentially it cradles your legs/calves, and with your seat fully reclined, you'll actually find you will be able to get some sleep. Unlike other airlines with bars/foot-rests that move down, the net stops your legs from slipping/moving during sleep, so you don't find yourself being woken quite as often...

We came to Bangkok from Sydney and stayed here for 3 months (my wife is Thai). We flew economy on a direct flight. I am not fussy about food, but the two meals I had in the 9 1/2 hour flight were the worst I've ever had on a plane. Our return flight is booked for Jan 3. It's via Singapore. We were supposed to wait for a couple of hours for a connecting flight to Sydney, but Qantas changed the second flight twice, and now we have to wait 8 hours in Singapore. No apology. My wife wanted to stay a little longer, so I tried to change our tickets. I had a flexi return ticket so I assumed that, being high season I was going to be charged a couple of thousand Aussie dollars for the change. After waiting a couple of days to get through to their Bangkok office (I couldn't do it online) I managed to talk to a human. I asked to get me a flight two weeks later, I am flexible with dates, and get me the cheapest as I don't mind catching a connecting flight from Singapore. The quote I was given was an additional AU$4,900 each for the return economy flight!!! I've been a Qantas frequent flyer for 40 years... Goodbye Qantas!

Thanks, Josh. Very informative. I also travelled SYD-JNB five months ago, also on the QFA 787, QF 63, but up the front of the bus. We also used the QF biz lounge at Kingsford-Smith. I was a little muffed to see in your video that the free galley snack-packs were for economy, as well as business! Our flight route took us much further south into the Southern Ocean than yours; closer to the Antarctic - there was quite a bit of turbulence at that time and I was having a decent chat to the Second Officer whilst we were waiting for the lavatory. At that point he got onto the flight deck phone/intercom and I held onto the nearest pole I could find, for dear life! Obviously it was a very different experience for me than you, but the Dreamliner was a beautiful, new plane with ridiculously quiet engines and the equal-highest climb ratio of any aircraft in 2023 (along with the A350). QANTAS experience was excellent/faultless, wonderful cabin attendants, but one expects that in the upper classes; I have had a couple of shocking experiences with them on BNE-SYD/SYD-BNE, econ, recently, where the aircraft/seats/cabin crew were atrocious, cabin crew unpleasant, extremely rude. QF is in a lot of trouble right now, not financially anymore, but as a result of that awful Alan Joyce. Disgusting that he bailed ship early, but still received a golden handshake of $24 m. Thanks again for the great film, Josh!

that is the effects on aviation of the Jet stream flows. from wikipedia: The location of the jet stream is extremely important for aviation. Commercial use of the jet stream began on 18 November 1952, when Pan Am flew from Tokyo to Honolulu at an altitude of 7,600 metres (24,900 ft). It cut the trip time by over one-third, from 18 to 11.5 hours.[34] Not only does it cut time off the flight, it also nets fuel savings for the airline industry.[35][36] Within North America, the time needed to fly east across the continent can be decreased by about 30 minutes if an airplane can fly with the jet stream, or increased by more than that amount if it must fly west against it. Associated with jet streams is a phenomenon known as clear-air turbulence (CAT), caused by vertical and horizontal wind shear caused by jet streams.

Interesting video. My last experience of Qantas was back in 2003 - Singapore to London, 747... I'm 183cm tall and was stuck in middle seats of the four (3-4-3). The seat pitch was diabolical and my knees felt awful by the end. Another flight I did was in 2016, with the, then LAN Airlines, now LATAM, Madrid to Santiago, that was 14 hours and because Chilean people are very short, the seat pitch was also horrendous on the 787-9, that said, the crew were great. I flew back from Chile on Iberia, having upgraded at the last minute, to business, but the flight wasn't enjoyable, as I had serious gastrointestinal illness (haemorrhaging!) managed the flight somehow, but visited the Loo around 35 times!
@sandraw8219 Жыл бұрын
I can see that those experiences wouldn’t have been comfortable but there are a large number of people your height or over, someone has to sit in the middle seat and I’m sure you would have the same experience, if not worse, in economy on any airline as seat pitch and leg room is pretty standard.

Hi Josh, I work for Air Canada and think our safety videos are pretty awesome as well. I know you are not a big fan of Air Canada😂, saw your videos with us. Especially the recent one where all of the Canadian nature is showcased is a nice safety video. In 2019 I traveled on ANA and found their video at the time to be fantastic.

I agree! We (Brits here) flew LHR to YYZ in March with Air Canada and the safety video with all the Canadian nature was awesome! Just watching the video made my daughter feel even more excited about going to live and work in Canada for 2 years (hopefully longer). BTW we really liked Air Canada. We even loved the extra touches such as the maple leaf wallpaper in the large toilet with window on the 787! The return leg in Premium Economy was excellent and we got to see the Aurora/ Northern Lights all the way from Hudson Bay to Greenland!

Hey Josh, I just wanted to say I took Qantas 2 weeks ago from Sydney to Vancouver and I was honestly super impressed. I literally had the same experience as you and my impression is that to me this is the best airline I have ever taken in the world. amazing crew, good food, solid entertainment what else do you need, Yes I agree the flight is long.

Good to see you had a good time regardless of all the controversies about QANTAS, their outgoing CEO and board. For example, just this week QANTAS, the Australian consumer affairs are giing after them for selling tickets on flights they were never going to fly.

Qatar wanted to fly extra flights to Australia but the government refused to protect Qantas, what a Piss take, ordinary people have to pay inflated prices ,what happened to competition?
@hamish5987 Жыл бұрын
@@jon-ie4li Qatar has the same slots as every other international airline that comes to aus if not more. What makes them think they’re so special they’re able to have the same amount of slots as an Australian owned airline. It’s not a piss take, saying Qatar coming to Australia is going to decrease air fares is a load of rubbish. Qatar is one of the most expensive airlines and will only push the fares up. The ceo of virgin only wants Qatar to have more slots because Virgin has an alliance with Qatar. So her whinging to the accc doesn’t mean anything for air fares it’s only money for her back pocket with no change to airfares. There’s still multiple alternative routes to get out of Australia without flying qantas already without Qatar flying extra flights. Qantas already has enough competition to decrease airfares so not sure why you you think anything would change if Qatar were allowed in aus more frequent.
@Royalpaininbum Жыл бұрын
@@hamish5987Alan Joyce was interviewed about the high airfares and he had the hide to say, and I quote," When there's more competition you will see airfares come down, especially when Cathay ramp up their services". Don't know why he picked out Cathay but still to say increasing QATARS services won't affect airfares is a bit out there. QANTAS are already starting to discount the HNL route as Hawaiian are looking to increase capacity to Australia.

@@Royalpaininbum yes but as an already high air fare airline it’s not going to do as much as everyone thinks. Admittedly it will decrease but by how much no one knows.

Another entertaining upload. I like the Singapore Airlines safety vid as well as their food and flight attendants. I did 15 hours once with Philippine Airlines, Manila to Heathrow.... we spent 8 hours just flying over Russia! I got the feeling we were a tad low on fuel by the time we got to London, we landed on 27R, which was the departures runway that evening!

I think you missed the biggest feature of the Qantas 787 dreamliner: They have a "net" as a footrest / foot suppor which makes those long flights a breeze. I just flew PER-LHR return (17:45h) and had no issues at all. The large area in the back of the aircraft is nice to stretch out and have a chat to the crew or other passengers. There are also two fridges with all sorts of drinks and snacks which you can help yourself to. There are also spare headphones and amenety kits. I always used to fly Emirates and stop over in Dubai due to flying A380, but this direct flight will replace that for me

I think all things considered the Qantas in air product is still very solid. No where near the best but also no where near the worst. Considering all the dramas the airline is putting itself through at present that is about all you can hope for. If they sort out their back of house it should allow their flying side to return where it was which is important if they want to still be considered a premium airline rather than just charging a premium price!

Call it a nightmare liner, I flew Etihad DC to Abu Dhabi it was horribly cramped, windows so high as to render them useless, and unnecessarily tinted to not allow you to get a feel for the outside. If I see a 787 leg of > 5 hours, I change booking, A350 is a luxury compared to 787. 777 is tolerable considering the A350

As a Dane I'm proud of the Opera House, though it became a sad story for its architect, Jørgen Utzon! After a disagreement with the builders, he left the built and never came back. So it is mostly the outside that was his responsibility. I think though that his son, also an architect, has been hired to make it more modern inside. His father still lived when this happened, so they could consult about what to do. The restaurants in the middle is a horrible mix of tubes and glass, as Utzon took his Standard Built System with him when he left, so they had to make a computer program to make plans for the glass.

Recently last week took a trip from Heathrow to Singapore on the QF2 Airbus A380 and found that the Qantas business class flight was very good. The seat turned into a good flatbed and was able to get a good 5 hours sleep on the 13 hour flight. The food was basic not what I would call business class but the overall service was very good. A bit disappointed that Qantas don’t provide business class passengers with a limo service for pick up and drop off but all in all a good flight and a good level of service. Cabin crew were very helpful and attentive. Flying tonight from Singapore to Perth which is only a five hour flight. Looking forward to it and would use Qantas again. Emirates is still the best service for me, but Qantas are doing a good job.

Great review, I’ve travelled that route several times on a 747, so it was interesting to see the comparison with the 787. The seats looked very good for economy, although I would hate to be in that window seat in a 3-3-3 configuration. Have you made any Singapore airlines flights recently. I flew Melbourne to London and then Frankfurt to Melbourne recently, in Premium Economy, and have been a SIA flyer for years and had always found them top notch even in economy class. This was my first long haul flight post pandemic, and have to say my experience this time was not great, the PE seats were great, but the food and service, not so much, food was average and on my final leg was poor. There was no drink service at all, even on the long legs from Europe to Singapore, you had to request drinks. The vanity pack was “on request” and as you mentioned in this review, cabin crew seemed to hide out in the galley. I would be interested if to hear if you have used them recently.

Hi, your latest review on Qantas is a change from their recent standards which was less than desirable. I gave up on Qantas two years ago with overpriced fares and terrible in flight service, their food was no better than a 7-11 microwave dish. I am an Ozzie and was proud to say I fly with Qantas, not now, as it has become a national disgrace after Alan Joyce destroyed Qantas's reputation and walks away with 125 million in bonuses. Now, the airline is facing fines of up to 200 million dollars from the ACCC for selling tickets to customers well after it had cancelled many of its flights. Their is also the issue of under the table deals with the government over subsidies during the pandemic and recently the Voice campaign. Keep in mind that Qantas is no longer partly owned by the government and is a private enterprise with share holders and is not entitled to special treatment. Regards Mad Max
