There's many options in the $600-$800 price category when it comes to prime lenses for the L-Mount, and the two brands that seem to dominate here for both performance and weight are Panasonic and Sigma.
The Sigma I Series primes are definitely newer than the 1.8 Primes from Panasonic, with two new additions that have only just been released.
I wanted to compare the Panasonic S Series primes with the Sigma I Series Primes to see who came out on top in terms of image quality, weight, autofocus and everything in between.
Thanks for watching!

This summer holidays we travelled through the Alps by car and hiking. Both in the mountains as well as some cities. I didn’t want to skimp on IQ, so instead of a smaller Fujifilm camera, I decided on taking my SL2 and SL2-S with me. I normally use these, next to my X2D, for professional fashion and beauty work in the studio. For that I have the 50 Lux-SL as well as the 24-90 and 75 Cron-SL lenses. Great glass, but quite heavy to carry around for an entire day at 37ºC. We also have two Lumix S lenses: the 50 and 85/f1.8. Both are lightweight and astonishingly good value for money. I decided to answer two questions for myself: 1) how good are the Lumix lenses really for stills, and 2) are they worthy of mounting to a Leica SL2 body? So, I borrowed two more S lenses: the 35 and the 18/f1.8 and here’s my conclusion. First, I didn’t take the 24/f1.8. I tried that lens before and although it was solid, I wasn’t impressed by the sharpness. I think it is nowhere near as good as the 50 and the 85 for stills. Nevertheless, for video it is great. Talking about video, if you’re a video shooter and use L-mount, don’t look further than these 5 Lumix S lenses. They’re almost a no-brainer. Same size, almost same weight, same filter size, great IQ, fast AF and great MF on both Panasonic S and Leica SL cameras. Having said that, I’m mostly a stills shooter, but I also value the filter size and AF performance. Secondly, although these lenses have ‘ plastic’ barrels (actually it is Thermal Stable Composite), they’re well-made and can take a beating. They don’t have the premium feel of an APO-Summicron-SL, but each weight less than half and costs about an eight of the price. Thirdly, these lenses behave great on a Leica body. AF is superfast and accurate. MF is fully configurable (I have mine set at linear with a 120º rotation). They’re beautifully balanced and with IBIS 0,5sec is no problem at all. Next, image quality is excellent. No, they’re not as good as the APO-SLs, but all 4 can easily handle 47MP and color rendering was identical. As for the 35 and 50, I’d be hard-pressed to tell the difference with the new Summicron-SL lenses. You have to really favor the premium feel of Leica to spend 4x as much for basically the almost same IQ. Are they as good as the Sigma i-Series or the Art-series? Yes, definitely as good as the i-Series 35/45/50/65/90mm and marginally less than the 20/24mm i-Series. However, the i-Series has max. apertures and filter sizes all over the place, are not weather sealed and AF is definitely not as good on SL2 and SL2-S bodies. As for the Art-series, yes, the 20/24 has visibly better IQ and the 35/50/85 are marginally better. However, all Art lenses are way heavier, bigger, more expensive and AF is also less consistent on SL2 and SL2-S bodies. My conclusion, these 4 Lumix S lenses (18/35/50/85) are exceptional in terms of value for money. The 50 and 85 are no-brainers also for stills photographers. For the 18 and 35 you might also look at the Sigma i-Series, but I valued the similarity in handling and AF/MF. As a fashion/beauty photographer I also prefer the Lumix over the Sigma rendering, although you can adjust that in post. In my view they’re worthy of mounting to an SL, SL2 or SL2-S. Yes, the APO-SLs are definitely better in all aspects, but these four lenses together cost less than half of one APO-SL lens. Having to carry my own bag and viewing the results afterwards, I never regretted not having an APO-SL with me. The only option would have been the 24-90 Vario-Elmar, but that lens mounted on an SL2 is a hefty set. Using the SL2-S and only the 35/f1.8 was such a great night outdoors combo, that I really enjoyed taking my camera with me.

omg they're so cute I can't cope. I got the Sigma 45mm free with the S5 as a launch offer, but it wasn't too good on that camera focus-wise. I loved the style and form factor. I reckon on the s5ii it'll be great because the AF is so much better.

They're lovely lenses, and the focus issues have definitely improved massively with the PDAF on the S5ii and S5iix, but they're still not as good as the trusty 1.8 primes! Honestly, I think Panasonic absolutely smashed it with those lenses

Thanks for the side by side comparison. Your video helps to explain the differences in size between LUMIX and Sigma lenses. If I’m shooting on a DSLR, that typically means that I want to to travel light. Thus, I’m more concerned about weight than size for lenses. If Im traveling heavy, then I prefer all metal construction. A dropped lens with a dent might be able to keep shooting. A dropped composite lens might crack or shatter the lens body, potentially making the lens unusable for shooting that day. Naturally most people don’t want to drop a lens ever. But it is something to consider. 👍

@philipae27 Hi, yes, it's a really nice combo. 35mm for environmental/ street shots and 65mm for portraits/ details etc. There's a lot of difference between these 2 focal lengths. I've only tried the 90mm at an expo, nice lens as well but I think the 65mm will be more versatile in a 2 lens combo. Also the 65mm is sharper than the 90mm (in case this is important to you).

I personally love the Sigma ones more, due to the aperture dial, and the more compact size... the lumix is standardized for video, but the extra weight of a series of prime lens do add up, and that means I need to adjust for a bigger gimbal as well. Can you even believe it when I say, I got a 17mm, 24mm, and 45mm all together for less than the weight of an S5, and I can pack all of the 17mm, 24mm, 45mm, aaannd the 90mm still weigh less than you S1H body alone....that that is to say all these lenses have full metal body.... insane....

I have the 35 and the 65 from Sigma, and the 50 and the 85 from Panasonic. I like the Sigma, as they are a bit more compact and I like the formfactor in general. The Panasonics schocked me by their plastic feeling. On the other hand, they work pretty well and there is not much to complain about. I think I will complete the range with a wider Lumix, maybe the 18 or 24. I would like to get a bit longer Lumix, like a 105/2.5 or such

The Sigma Lenses feel very premium in hand and on the camera compared to my Lumix glasses but one issue I find is I'm always spinning the aperture rings by accident when putting on or taking off the sigma lenses which normally slows me down if I'm in a hurry to get a shot, and I've noticed the autofocus in videos is very slow compared to when using the Lumix lenses. I try my best to work around those issues though because I love how they feel and their built-quality. I also love the image quality they produce at their price point but if I was supposed to choose between them and the Lumix glasses, I'd go Lumix without a second thought. P.S. Great video as usual Josh, waiting for you to try some TTArtisan glass lol

It's only a matter of time before other third parties like Samayang also jump on the L-Mount bandwagon, and then in a few years time it'll be almost as fleshed out as the E-Mount, making the L-Mount ecosystem one of the most exciting and viable options on the market :)

The RF lenses are undeniably great (although outrageously expensive), particularly the 15-35mm f/2.8, the 70-200mm f/2.8 and the L series primes, but the the S primes might be my favorite lens series ever. The S series lenses are small, sharp, durable and, as you demonstrate here, control focus breathing better than any other lens series in the industry. I could not be more impressed with the S series, especially when you account for the value, being a fraction of the cost of Canon RF L series glass.

And as for Prime title of Sigmas I just mean they are the better of the 2 with lower aperture and better build quality so out of the I's and Art series I would say the Art are Sigmas L mount primes.

@@Nocturnal_Mind perhaps premium is a better term, little confusing to say prime in that context.

night sky fotography would had been interesting! I consider getting an UW prime together with a Sigma 28-70 or 24-70, but struggle to pick between: a) Lumix 18/1.8 b) Sigma 20/2.0 c) Sigma 20/1.4 d) Sigma 16-28/2.8

they‘re all less than 900 bucks and 700 grams… oh and it‘s 50% video (mostly with the main zoom) and 50% photos (mostly landscape + astro)

Are those really less than 600$ in the US? In Europe, the Sigma 50mm has always been 700€. I've not watched this video yet but at that price point, there's unfortunately no reason for me to do so.

I think the Panasonic lenses are too sharp and I think I like the slightly softer Sigma look.

hmmm... rather superficially and non-detailed, particularly the direct comparison of all lenses (only the 24 2.0 was described..) and: the main reason for me to stay with the Sigma Lenses is their undobtly excellent mechanical quality in comparison to the fake-metal bodies of the Pan lenses, feeling hollow and imprecise .. their greatest advantage is a rather under "exposed" feature: they all share the same front filter diameter, meanwhile the Sigma vary between 49 and 62 mm...

I had the 65mm f2 from sigma for e-mount. Wanted to love it but was underwhelmed, overly heavy, AF was slow.

1:20 "The only physical switch...is the AF/MF ... and who actually uses that anyway?" Not sure if you are making a joke or not, but I use that switch on my Lumix lenses when I shoot real estate photography. For most of my tripod shots I'm in MF, and when I take handheld shots I usually switch to AF.

It was a little bit of a joke! But also kinda rings true for me as I very rarely touch the AF/MF switch (I'll normally just do it via the AF switch on the camera) !
