I absolutely love that Panasonic has created these four lenses to be the same size, relatively same weight, same aperture, same filter size, etc.. It's so nice to see a company putting this much thought into how their end-users will be using their equipment. I'm so excited to pick all four up over time.

Pav thanks for the vids! Big help! Just got the Lumix s5ii and kit lens. I do videos and photos but mostly videos. I'm excited to get the 35mm prime but then maybe I should the 16-35 pro? Is the 16-35 as sharp as the 35mm prime? Also I was excited about the 1.8 aperture for the 35mm and the 16-36 is only f4. I was looking forward to that 1.8! What do you think?

A Lumix S summer This summer holidays we travelled through the Alps by car and hiking. Both in the mountains as well as some cities. I didn’t want to skimp on IQ, so instead of a smaller Fujifilm camera, I decided on taking my SL2 and SL2-S with me. I normally use these, next to my X2D, for professional fashion and beauty work in the studio. For that I have the 50 Lux-SL as well as the 24-90 and 75 Cron-SL lenses. Great glass, but quite heavy to carry around for an entire day at 37ºC. We also have two Lumix S lenses: the 50 and 85/f1.8. Both are lightweight and astonishingly good value for money. I decided to answer two questions for myself: 1) how good are the Lumix lenses really for stills, and 2) are they worthy of mounting to a Leica SL2 body? So, I borrowed two more S lenses: the 35 and the 18/f1.8 and here’s my conclusion. First, I didn’t take the 24/f1.8. I tried that lens before and although it was solid, I wasn’t impressed by the sharpness. I think it is nowhere near as good as the 50 and the 85 for stills. Nevertheless, for video it is great. Talking about video, if you’re a video shooter and use L-mount, don’t look further than these 5 Lumix S lenses. They’re almost a no-brainer. Same size, almost same weight, same filter size, great IQ, fast AF and great MF on both Panasonic S and Leica SL cameras. Having said that, I’m mostly a stills shooter, but I also value the filter size and AF performance. Secondly, although these lenses have ‘ plastic’ barrels (actually it is Thermal Stable Composite), they’re well-made and can take a beating. They don’t have the premium feel of an APO-Summicron-SL, but each weight less than half and costs about an eight of the price. Thirdly, these lenses behave great on a Leica body. AF is superfast and accurate. MF is fully configurable (I have mine set at linear with a 120º rotation). They’re beautifully balanced and with IBIS 0,5sec is no problem at all. Next, image quality is excellent. No, they’re not as good as the APO-SLs, but all 4 can easily handle 47MP and color rendering was identical. As for the 35 and 50, I’d be hard-pressed to tell the difference with the new Summicron-SL lenses. You have to really favor the premium feel of Leica to spend 4x as much for basically the almost same IQ. Are they as good as the Sigma i-Series or the Art-series? Yes, definitely as good as the i-Series 35/45/50/65/90mm and marginally less than the 20/24mm i-Series. However, the i-Series has max. apertures and filter sizes all over the place, are not weather sealed and AF is definitely not as good on SL2 and SL2-S bodies. As for the Art-series, yes, the 20/24 has visibly better IQ and the 35/50/85 are marginally better. However, all Art lenses are way heavier, bigger, more expensive and AF is also less consistent on SL2 and SL2-S bodies. My conclusion, these 4 Lumix S lenses (18/35/50/85) are exceptional in terms of value for money. The 50 and 85 are no-brainers also for stills photographers. For the 18 and 35 you might also look at the Sigma i-Series, but I valued the similarity in handling and AF/MF. As a fashion/beauty photographer I also prefer the Lumix over the Sigma rendering, although you can adjust that in post. In my view they’re worthy of mounting to an SL, SL2 or SL2-S. Yes, the APO-SLs are definitely better in all aspects, but these four lenses together cost less than half of one APO-SL lens. Having to carry my own bag and viewing the results afterwards, I never regretted not having an APO-SL with me. The only option would have been the 24-90 Vario-Elmar, but that lens mounted on an SL2 is a hefty set. Using the SL2-S and only the 35/f1.8 was such a great night outdoors combo, that I really enjoyed taking my camera with me.
@Muchtoobizy
@Muchtoobizy Жыл бұрын
Thank you for taking the trouble to post this. I own a SL2-s and I've been reluctant to invest in these lightweight plastic-feeling lenses for such an expensive camera. You make a good argument. I can't afford APO lenses and I hate compromises, so maybe I will give this 35/1.8 or 50/1.8 a try.

The Sigma is about $200 more and about twice the weight of the Panasonic but it gets the better aperture. I'm just not sure if the tradeoffs are worth it for the Sigma.

Hi, I’m considering to buy the lumix s5m2 for close range videos(as a tattoo artist). So what lens do you suggest to buy? S18,24,35? Thanks a lot!
@PavSZ
@PavSZ Жыл бұрын
for close up work I'd go for 50 or 85mm. If you mean that you want to use it in the tighter space than 24 or 35mm might be more suited. 18mm is great but you'll see noticeable wide angle distortion when you get close to your subject with it

Hey Pav, thanks for your very informative videos. Been watching a lot of your videos lately. Keep it up! Also, I have some questions if you don’t mind. Looking into buying a full-frame camera soon and really considering the S5-upgrading from Fuji XT20 and Sony ZV1 (thinking of keeping the Sony and maybe selling the Fuji). 1. I’m thinking of buying the 50mm 1.8 as my first lens for the S5 and skip the kit lens for now. I can buy it for around the same price here in Japan, second-hand. I’m currently using the Fuji 18-55 2.8-4 kit lens with my Fuji XT20 and just feel that it’s not shallow enough, and just generally would like to try a new lens-I feel that it’s very similar to the 20-60 3.5-5.6(?) kit lens of Panasonic. What do you think? 2. Also, I'm still not 100% on the S5 because of the autofocus and because the FujiXT4 (meaning I don’t need to change system) having very similar features albeit being APS-C, plus XT4 has 400 megabit (?) video recording over S5’s 150(?) (does this even matter?). And also I’m also looking at Nikon Z6 II which I think is very similar to the S5 in terms of price and specs. Z6II having better autofocus according to reviews but only has 8bit internally. And I’m not sure but I think Nikon Z has more expensive lens than Panasonic? Can you confirm this since I know you have a Nikon Z6? Anyway, my use case would be around 50/50 or 60% video, 40% photo. For video, I use it for documenting art projects and short documentaries (interviews, brolls, etc.), plus maybe some travel, and possibly self-filming, hence the need for autofocus. For photo, it is more personal (family and street photography) but also supplementary to documentation of the art projects that I do. Thanks in advance if you get to answer my question. Would love to know from others as well if they have experience with these systems. :)

I own a lumix S1 and the autofocus is just fine for photos, but for video the continuous autofocus is not at all reliable. I shoot sports videos mostly and I have to shoot at f/11 so that the shots are usable if not in focus. For reliable continuous autofocus there are only 2 option in my opinion, sony and canon.

I'm nowhere near as good as the gear I've bought...but I picked up the 85 and the 35 to try and oh my word. Instantly my photographs were better. It was more noticeable with the 85. The 85 makes everything you take a pic of look like it's been shopped to draw your attention. However, I find that the (based on my skill) 85 likes light and contrast but in overall low light scenarios my 35 works better. For example, the supreme magic of just taking a pic of a guitar in a stand was gone when I tried to get shots of a band on stage. in Very low light and very busy scenes with dancers, strobes, colored led-s etc. the 35 was the one that got me the best shots.

Regarding the focus by wire system: I have the Lumix S Pro 24-70mm. When I focus manually, I can see the steps when the focus plane is moving. It is not stepless or smooth at all. The focus plane jumps and it gets very noticeable at higher focal lengths. Strangely enough, this does not occur in the AF modes: here the focus is smooth and the stepless motor kicks in. In my opinion, the stepless motor should also be activated in manual mode.

The reason why this lens has character is because it's likely a Leica optical formula. The Leica 50mm F2 and the Lumix 50mm 1.8 are nearly identical in rendering character except the Leica lens is made with higher quality glass so it's sharper. This lens is likely the same with the Leica 35mm F2.

Really... i too *strongly* dislike 35mm and go either for 85 or 20. Is it that good, does it absolutely obliterate the 20/24 options? It does look good but it's got that boring or even ugly perspective.
@PavSZ
@PavSZ 2 жыл бұрын
it does not obliterate the 20/24 - totally different focal length. I can't see myself using 35mm for everything - it is one of those focal lengths that it has it's purpose.
@fredriksvard2603
@fredriksvard2603 2 жыл бұрын
@@PavSZ yeah i know some do, and some get great results. It would have to be a pretty special lens to let quality dictate focal length though. I like 20 myself but as you say its totally different
