Hi Friends.
This week I wanted to share my thoughts on the Olympics overall. Now that they are over and we can look back there are so many memorable snapshots, performances, and moments we can hold forever.
The U.S. and China were neck and neck for Gold medals leading to a controversy over how we count medals and the practices America has engaged in to always seem like we are on top without mentioning certain data and metrics.
We were in shock and awe of moments that were undoubtedly deeply unfortunate for athletes like runners that fell or dropped batons during track events and pole vaulters who were disqualified or missed the mark in field.
Russia was notably not a presence in the games with many chiming in as to the reasons and if they were fair to the athletes that would have competed this year.
Hosted in Paris this year’s Olympics saw fierce competition between Great Britain, Germany, France, Italy, Australia, Kenya, Zimbabwe, and the United States.
St Lucia and some other smaller countries received their first medals.
One person that captivated everyone throughout the course of their event was an Australian breakdancer. Rachel Gunn known by some as Raygun put out a performance that was wildly criticized and also called into question how she ever qualified in the first place with a lot of the breakdance community in Australia saying they never even knew a qualifying event was taking place.

@montananerd8244
@montananerd8244 Ай бұрын
If you saw him later smiling with his team, he just looks like a sweet & very handsome middle aged professional. Target shooters are intense in competition, but are pretty cool people. Out in the western USA, you even find people who got into competitive shooting because they are too kind hearted for hunting (which is a lot less mean than the beef industry, btw, but does take a certain detachment) but love guns. The people who love guns only when it’s extremely unlikely they’ll hurt another living being, those are the best people around.

There was a $95 annual fee to be ELIGIBLE to compete, $20 entry per event, of which there were many per year around the country. You had to pay for your own travel, lodging, and food, and THEN you had to fly YOURSELF overseas MULTIPLE TIMES to gain "points" in other olympic prequalifiers. Woman from Australia competed once. And SHE was in charge of the competition she won. Suuuuuuuper happy for Ami and Phil Wizard for winning the Gold medals! Homegirl in question literally created her spot and was never audited.

okay this is going to sound unrelated, but in cribbage a zero point hand has a nickname a 19 hand, because its impossible to get 19 points in the game. you can get anything from 1-18, 20-24, 28 or 29, but not 19. i bring this up as when bored playing with family, sometimes we change the rules up to change the game. one change up is if you get a zero hand you actually get to take the 19 points. so my aunts strategy with this change up is if she had a low hand to discard so she has zero points. and then when the deck is cut she'll end up with a pair or Knibbs and not zero points, and she'll have thrown away points for nothing. so i am confirming sometimes to get zero points is in fact hard work.

with the australian “breakdancer”, if you look into how she got to the olympics; she basically nominated herself. her husband is a breakdancer and owner of an australian breakdancing company. when breakdancing got added to the olympics, the australian committee outsourced the qualification process to a third party australian company; that lady’s husband’s company. she “won” events in australia (judged by her husband and friends) where less than 10 women showed up so technically she qualified for the olympics.

Yeah, an object lesson that it is not a great idea to cheat your way onto the global stage without being nearly good enough to impress people with what you are doing. I write music but I don't have a steady band that performs regularly and this would be like if I blagged my way onto the bill at Madison Square Garden supporting a major touring act after a week's rehearsal with a new band I pretended to have been with for years. That would....not go well.

Hi! Latvia/USA dual citizen here (first generation- immigrant's daughter on my dad's side)! Pretty sure there were TWO Latvian players in this past season's NBA, including Kristaps Porzingis who played for the Boston Celtics, who WON this year's NBA Finals! Also, the Latvian men's team won GOLD at the Tokyo Olympics in 3x3 basketball, while this year they placed 4th overall. So, Latvia doing decently well in 3x3 basketball in this Olympics wasn't quite SO out of the blue as some might think 😉. That being said, it is always exciting to watch BOTH of my countries compete!! 😄🏀

I have to say for 3x3, it is a FIBA product and FIBA requires the players to accrue a certain number of points playing 3x3 all over the world over about a 6-month period in order to qualify for the Olympics. None of our NBA players or people trying to make it to the NBA will ever be able to take the time away from the NBA to accrue the points required to participate in 3x3 in the Olympics, which is why our best will never be able to represent the USA in Olympic 3x3.

TLDR on what happened with Miss Raygun: - The World Dance Sport Federation, a BALLROOM dancing authority, wanted to have ballroom as a sport. - IOC said no, thats lame, we want something cool to appeal to the youth, how about breakdancing?" - WDSF said "bet, we can be in charge of that", despite having literally nothing to do with breakdancing. - WSDF delegates to their Aussie affiliate, DanceSport Australia. Another ballroom authority, no ties to breaking. - DSA has absolutely no fcking idea what they're doing, so they defer to Rachel Gunn, a former ballroom/ballet dancer with a PhD that focusses on cultural elements within breaking. - Rachel's husband runs the Australian Breaking Association, which despite its official sounding name is only a local org and extremely tiny, it has less than 30 members. - This tiny association is given complete control over the Australian Olympic breaking qualifying tournament. It consists of only their members. Including Rachel. No national call out is made, no other breakers from outside this small community in Sydney are invited or made aware it is even happening - Thanks to complete lack of oversight or responsibility from the IOC, AOC, and DSA. Rachel "Raygun" Gunn wins this tiny comp of hobbyist breaking run by her husbands club, and becomes an Olympian repping the entire country. Memes ensue.

How does this channel not have millions of subscribers? Love seeing him on the Daily Show but the constant new material is so impressive.

When I saw Yusuf Dikeç for the first time, I thought to myself "I hope Josh talks about this in one of his upcoming shows" because I knew it would be hilarious. I'm so happy you did! Sending much love from Turkey!! 🌸
