In this episode of Harp Tuesday I talk about three different types of exercises - scales, finger independence, and arpeggios. I give a somewhat in-depth look at arpeggios starting at: 14:26

I think this is one of the very best lessons you have given. Why? Because you demonstrate as much as you talk. For me one demonstration is worth a thousand words. Of course the commentary is necessary. But what I like here is the breaking down of scales and chords and then the demonstrable encouragement to speed things up. So many harp tutorials demonstrate only at slow speeds, but no faster. It is so much more inspiring to see how you gradually speed things up to aim at scales and arpeggios that are actually useful. Thank you.

May I add that one of the most difficult things for beginner harpists is the cross-over from the thumb to the fourth finger when doing a scale. For thousands of harpists this is a real stumbling block - efficiently changing positions with no buzz and a flowing scale. BTW, up is so much more difficult than down because of the tucking of the fourth and third finger ready to play after the thumb!

I so appreciate you, Josh! I finally have my first harp! It's a Blevins Encore 34, and I am love. It made me realize just how bad my eyesight is! 😢 It's going to take me a while to feel comfortable with hand position. I want it just like yours.

I have a question that I've been searching around from video to video but cannot find. I am a violinist and pianist and when it comes to scales and arpeggios it follows keys which depending on the key you can have multiple sharps and flats to play. How do you play these sharps and flats on a harp? If you can that is

Keiko Kitten Hi Keiko, on the harp you "set" the key you're in with your levers or pedals. So the fingerings remains the same no matter what scale you're playing. The pedal harp, for example, has a pedal for each note in the diatonic scale (A-G), and three settings for each pedal - Flat, Natural, and Sharp. So if you're in the key of C and want to play a G major scale, you'll change the F pedal to sharp, but the fingering will remain the same (just one string after another) So yes, unlike the piano or violin, one scale fits all, so to speak :) Hope that makes sense!
