Hi, during the past few years of teaching masterclasses I noticed a huge difficulty in playing a SIMPLE improvisation... and here you can fix the problem!
Being able to improvise gives great freedom, so anybody should know a little bit about it!
Have fun, best wishes
Chiara

The difficulty I have with improving on the harp (unlike my "real" instrument, the flute) is the necessity for placing and bridging fingering. For written pieces I usually have to work out all this finger choreography ahead of time. I don't understand how people do it on the fly - for example, Celtic players who change the ornamentation constantly throughout a piece. How do they do this without tripping up the fingering surrounding the changed ornamentation? I learn pieces by muscle memory, and if I veer away from the muscle map, the whole structure comes down.
@samanthathompson9812

Whoops I meant improvising not improving, but I suppose they're related!
@chiarapedrazzettiarpatelie6470
@chiarapedrazzettiarpatelie6470 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Samantha sorry just saw your message now. You're doing it right to work out the "finger choreography" (I love this expression, I'm gonna steal it) :-D With time you'll be able to free yourself a bit from that, especially for impro. Celtic music players are very used to put ornamentation (which is always the same 2-3 patterns) in specific parts of the pieces, so it becomes quite automatic eventually. Keep up the good work and, as Father Bach's Aria is saying....: "Geduld, geduld!"

Do you have any suggestions on how the right hand should align with the left hand? For example, when the left hand lands on a C chord, do you also want the right hand to be on a C chord note (CEG)?

Inversions help, so if you play a C chord with left, if you play any C inversion with the right hand you're good to go. My suggestion,,,just try, practice, try and practice again!

Scales mean note after note. Nope I don't avoid any note on the right hand. As for the chords in the left hands, yes, the C is the first note. You can also experiment with inversions later though.
