I think IT is alot better because you can break into both software development and Cybersecurity, IT degree is more practical and relatively easier than CS which not just makes it fun to learn but is also very valuable in the future, not mentioning that you have higher chance of being employed with an IT degree

Been watching your videos for awhile now and they’ve been very helpful. I’m recently laid off from working a Tier 2 Tech at an MSP, and it has been an incredible struggle trying to land a new job. I’ve updated my resume, I’ve been taking a 100 Days of Python alongside Google’s Cybersecurity cert program, and I’m hoping to increase my employability dramatically when those are done. That being said, after 9 months of being unemployed, 20-40 applications a week, and nothing but rejection emails.. it’s rough. Still love your content and am always looking out for new videos. Thanks Josh!

I wish I saw this sooner. I am currently doing CS and am in way over my head. I am not enjoying the process and I need way more time to study the math. I am going to pivot now and just get my WGU IT degree so I at least have a BS. I will learn the math at my own pace, transfer credits, and then do CS. Thank you for this advice 🙏

Love love love, your concise breakdown of this.. it can be applied in many ways and not just between IT and Compsci, but cyber and SWE as well. I just hit my 90 day mark at my MSP job, and while I love helping people and solving problems, I kinda hate being married to the phone 😁😁😁. Using your flow chart, I can kind of draw conclusions to formulate a plan for my next steps going forward in my IT plan

Sounds like IT would be more beneficial with certs for me. I already have some networking experience through controls engineering dealing with workstations, servers, and switches and was looking to pivot into network engineering or cyber security. Saw alot of people saying do Comp Science but it seemed to me that all the CS programs I saw were tailored to making programmers but the IT program gave me everything for networking and can pick cyber courses.

Ended up choosing the BS in ITM at WGU. Its definitely the fastest degree, and i think itll be great for someone like me with good work experience and just need to check a box. Supplementing with certs such as google Cyber security and plan on doing the CISA level stuff afterwards. Cheers!

This is the best video i've seen that compares CS and IT degrees. My answers are no for all of the branches, but that's exactly why I want to do CS. The reality is that you can make six figures without a degree, regardless. The question is why are you looking at getting a degree.

CYBER LOL I am actually one of those people that like math...But it's difficult to devote time to a Computer Science degree when you have small kids. I remember my wife getting hers and she was telling me how delirious she was when she had to get past the DS / ALGO classes. She actually passed one of them off of a technicality...the professor said I don't care how you solve this block of code, just make it print...so my wife just commented out the whole block with the exception of the print function and passed the class lol Eventually, I will get my degree though it will probably be in Software Engineering.

What about a degree of cyber security vs computer science? need a decision tree for that added into it! lol I really like coding I've always done it on the side as a passion hobby I'm not sure if I should go for computer science, software engineer or cyber security. My favorite thing is to automate and problem solve I'm interested in cyber as well if I could incorporate the coding aspect into cyber, not sure which one would be the best but I feel like Computer Science would give me the option to explore multiple fields without feeling like I made a mistake choosing a specific degree. More I think about it watching your video the more I'm questioning if I could make it through a CS degree without dying of boredom as I am a more hands on person so if I would actually like to finish it would either be software engineer or cyber security degree.

You should also keep in mind there are a few CS degrees that don’t require a lot of math. The highest level of math in OSU post bacc CS is Precalculus or College Algebra and you take Discrete Math once you’re in the program. Another program in my state that I was looking into is a BA in CS where the highest math is also Precalculus and Discrete Math. The two math classes that’s also required for their BS in IT.

BTW I love Math and it was one of the deciding Factors to go for Computer Science over CIT . I felt Computer Science was going to better prepare me than something more specialized. If I didn't like Cybersecurity i could of went with Software Development or even as a Data Analyst . the options were just far wider
@Siegefya
@Siegefya 9 ай бұрын
Only one I can say is about on par with it, if not arguably better. Computer engineering. Reason is because CPE opens you up to software stuff that a CS grad can get into (usually not as deep but tbh not far off from being as deep, maybe 3-4 classes off if that), but also hardware stuff that you really don't learn unless you go to very specific schools in CS, many CS students can't take certain EE and CPE electives in embedded systems stuff, which is actually not well known jobs but they pay very well, like test engineer, firmware engineer, embedded systems test etc, those are 6 figure jobs in medium cost of living places. The WGU CS curriculum is good, I mean it's abet accredited, but it's not gonna prepare you to go into like certain hardware specific stuff a computer engineer can get into... you'd have to self learn a lot of shit like verilog etc which isn't easy to learn. Especially if that computer engineer takes a lot of FPGA, VSLI, hardware specific classes in undergrad. I recommend if you REALLY like math, consider Computer engineering, you'll be going from calculus 1,2,3 + differential equations, plus doing computer science math because you have to take some CS classes, OOP as well... Then you'll get Into a little bit of the electrical engineering math as well through some of those classes like circuits etc. Just a thought, CS is dope as well though... And arguably somewhat easier than CPE, especially at WGU as they only require cal 1 and then discreet.
