Zach Roberts This video of Maldonado is a clear reminder that it is not always the car. Maldonado would have achieved way more in F1 if he wasn't always crashing and getting himself in trouble. Take for example that race in Valencia where he crashed into the side of Hamilton while trying to overtake. A driver with a better race craft would have chosen a better spot to overtake as he was clearly faster than Lewis at that point. The years that Lewis didn't have a good car, he still managed to win races and finish a lot of times on the podium. The only F1 driver till date that has always managed to win at least a race in all the seasons he has participated. That's talent, not just car.

I am a racing driver myself and I know from early Kart days that tunnel vision is a thing. So, its very hard to see something like a pit board or a flag when you are focussing on the track or something else. With exhaustion over the race this is getting worse and worse. I believe that is what happened to Maldonado at all of his "yellow flag incidents". After a while you get used to it, but maybe the speeds driven in F1 were too much for him, and I cant really blame him. You saw him also struggle a lot with controls, while managing something on his steering wheel. So I guess he is just bad at multi tasking, which is bad because you need this as a racing driver in any serious event. Not just F1, but also in touring cars for example. The cars are so complicated and the team wants you to communicate with them and change settings in the car right on the fly in tricky conditions. Sometimes I asked myself what he was thinking going way too fast into a corner. Also he didnt seem to be the smartest guy, when you talked to him. Felt kind of bad for him to be honest, because he was portraited like a clown. But then again some of his accidents were really pathetic to say at least. Dont be too hard on us, since errors are natural. Racing drivers are not perfect. We make mistakes, we push the cars and ourselves to the limit and often enough beyond. The more performance you get from a car the more scatchy it gets. Just compare of what you have achieved compared to the guy who has spon out or something. Applies to other sports (like football) as well.

To be fair on the Lewis incident... Lewis pushed him off track, he literally forced Maldonado to use the run-off area. Which yeah, he should've but... Consistent driving was Hartley's forte, however, being behind the pecking order with Gasly is always going to make you look behind the pace. Half the accidents that Hartley was involved in were mechanical issues or due to other drivers.

Idk why, but idea of 20 year old Maldonado racing for 2005 Minardi is somewhat hilarious and terrifying at the same time.

18:08, from what I’ve heard, the meaning of number 13 is the complete opposite in Venezuela.

Not really true, as a Venezuelan I can tell you that number 13 means bad luck
@shiftyfitter4 жыл бұрын
I checked, in Venezuela 13 is still one more than 12 and one less than 14.

Two racing drivers I know that are Venezuelan, fast at times and crash a lot Pastor Maldonado in F1, from 2011-2015 and Ernesto (EJ) Viso in Indycar from 2008-2013 Both ran PDVSA and the #13 in their careers
@cas54473 жыл бұрын
When thinking of Pastor I actually have to think of that amazing save while fighting Max Verstappen at Austria 2015 (him moving to the inside on the main straight, Max covering him and Pastor, in trying to avoid running into the back of him, having to catch that car at ~300-310km/h)

Fun fact... Two years ago, Maldonado was entered to drive _a 1936 Maserati 6CM at Monaco GP Historique..._ Lets just let that sink in... Hes supposed to race a 1930s single seater racer, in the streets of Monaco...

Well Pastor won a GP and Ragunathan can barely execute a three point Turn so, Maldonado would lap him (given he could keep the car in the track)
@p.informatico13202 жыл бұрын
Maldonado was the kind of driver who would drive to the limit trying to squeeze every drop of potential of the car... unfortunately he would often surpass that limit, crashing into walls or other drivers...
@BrandonA12 жыл бұрын
People love that attribute. Guys like Gilles Villeneuve, Jean Alesi, even Ayrton Senna had hard as physically possible. The difference is, they knew the difference between Driving hard and driving reckless. Maldonado was incredibly reckless and if he just drove the car properly he could have made far more points finishes
